AF1 African Home-Grown Innovative Solutions for Water, Sanitation and
Hygiene: Successful and Promising Solutions in Achieving the WASH MDGS in
Africa
CREPA (Water and Sanitation for Africa-WSA)
Sanitation and water are recognized as human rights, yet two-thirds of Africa’s people have inadequate access to sanitation.
This has a devastating impact on the economy, health, education and social well-being. The economic cost of the lack of safe
water and basic sanitation in the region results in a loss of approximately 5% of Africa’s GDP. The spending on WASH is minimal
and aid flows going to water has contracted over the last 15 years especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, the most economically- and
WASH-poor region. Without strong commitment and targeted action from governments and donors, this inequality of access,
resulting in poverty cycles and health hazards will increase especially in neglected communities. This session will present the
existing and innovative African-Home grown solutions tailored to getting the neglected communities on-track to meeting the
MDGs by 2015, among others:
• Promoting Public-Private Partnership in Rwanda’s Rural Water Supply;• Successful WASH in the peri-urban areas of
Accra;• Developing a Scalable Model for Demand Led Sanitation Approaches in Africa.

: des solutions probantes et prometteuses pour atteindre les OMD dans le
secteur EAH du continent africain

L’assainissement et l’eau sont reconnus comme faisant partie des droits de l’homme. Deux tiers des Africains ne disposent
cependant d’aucun accès approprié à l’assainissement. Cette situation a des effets véritablement dévastateurs sur l’économie,
la santé, l’éducation et le bien-être social. Le coût économique du manque d’eau salubre et d’assainissement de base dans la
région équivaut à près de 5 % du PIB du continent africain. Les investissements réalisés dans le secteur EAH sont minimes et les
flux d’aide destinés à l’eau ont diminués au cours de ces 15 dernières années, notamment en Afrique sub-saharienne, qui
constitue pourtant la région la plus pauvre, tant du point de vue économique que du secteur EAH.
En l’absence d’un fort engagement et d’actions ciblées des gouvernements et des donateurs, cette inégalité en termes d’accès,
qui engendre des cycles de pauvreté et génère des risques pour la santé, tendra à s’accroître et touchera plus particulièrement
des communautés déjà laissées pour compte.
La session présentera les solutions innovantes et existantes que l’Afrique a mises au point pour permettre aux communautés
laissées pour compte d’atteindre les OMD d’ici à 2015, notamment :
• la promotion d’un partenariat privé-public dans le domaine de l’approvisionnement en eau en milieu rural au Rwanda ;
• un secteur EAH performant dans les zones périurbaines d’Accra ;
• le développement d’un modèle évolutif pour les approches d’assainissement axées sur la demande en Afrique.
