Wakakirri
Congratulations to our students, supported by teachers Cathy Marot and Susan Cribb, for their dedication to the Wakakirri
Performance at the Canberra Theatre last week. It was, by all accounts, an amazing performance in every way!
TPS Skoolbag APP
A quick reminder that the TPS App is now being used. Please download the free App from either the Apple, Google or Windows
stores depending on your device and you will have another way of receiving targeted information regarding your children from
the school. Please note that we will continue to email messages and send through hard copies. People communicate in a wide
variety of styles and we are aiming to support this by increasing our communication methods.

There will be a Year 8 Common Evaluation Task that all Year 8 students will be expected to participate in on Tuesday 15 th
September. This task is designed to collect data to help inform teaching and learning at Telopea. It is not an assessment task
aligned to any subject. Please contact Michele McLoughlin or Kylie Louis for further information.

Kind regards,

Wakakirri

SECONDARY NEWS
French Exchange
“To be here, in Australia is kind of a dream for any French and it was a big chance for us to come here.
Living as an Australian is such a good experience for discovering and enjoying a lot of new things.
After these 6 weeks, the only thing we'd like to do is thank all students and teacher we've met because you were all so nice,
'gentils', friendly and 'accueillants'. Thank you so much everyone for this amazing trip. Merci beaucoup. “(French billet)
The 2016 Canberra Grenoble Exchange is scheduled from Saturday 2nd April to Sunday 8th May. Students will be with their host
families for four weeks, two weeks at the International school of Grenoble, Europole, and two weeks on holidays. The final week
will be in Paris going to Opera Garnier, a dinner cruise, Le Louvre, La Tour Eiffel, Montmartre and so much more.
French exchange students will be in Australia from Saturday 18 th June to Saturday 30th July (dates to be confirmed).
Please contact Mme Blumstein (Languages) if interested.
German excursions
Each year, TPS German students take part in a range of German excursions and events together with other students across
Canberra. In Term 2, Year 10 students attended an immersion day for Year 10, 11 and 12 students across Canberra at the
Palace Electric Cinemas in collaboration with Audi Festival of German Films. The students viewed a popular teenage time travel
film ‘Saphirblau’ from Germany and participated in discussion groups following the film. Year 8 and 9 students also had a chance
to attend this festival, watching the heartfelt Austrian drama ‘Das Pferd auf dem Balkon’.
Year 7 German students got out and about to visit the zoo and take part in a range of German language based activities together
with another school in Canberra. It was a great day, despite the rain and students demonstrated their animal vocabulary well as
they completed activities around the zoo.

Indonesian news. This term students are fortunate to have the help of a native speaker Indonesian Language Assistant. Ms
Catri Citraningtias will be joining classes from week 7, continuing the good work begun by Ibu Claudia last year.
Several excursions have taken place or are planned for our Indonesian students. In Term 2, Year 9 and 10 Indonesian students
visited Narrabundah College to meet with the Indonesian teachers and students there. They learned about the exciting
Indonesian program there, and took part in some language activities, as well as enjoying some Indonesian delicacies for lunch.
Students had a great time and some were inspired to continue their Indonesian studies at College level. To finish up Term 3, a
gamelan workshop is planned for Friday 19 September, for Year 7 and 8 students, at the Indonesian Embassy. Students will
Page 4 of 10
experience playing various instruments on the Embassy’s Javanese and Balinese gamelans, taught by Balinese maestro Pak
Gedé. Other excursions are planned for term 4, including more gamelan workshops, and an outing to the ANU Indonesian Day.
Japanese news.
Shiho Kato, from Nagoya in Japan, has come to join the Japanese class for the next three weeks. She is a third year university
student at Aichi Shukutoku University, in Nagoya. Her majors are communication and linguistics. In Japan she plays the clarinet
and is proud owner of a Boston Terrier called Plum. This is Shiho’s first trip to Australia and she said that she is looking forward
to ‘everything Australian.’ In particular, she is hoping to see kangaroos sometime this week. First impressions? The abundance of
nature in Canberra and free standing houses with gardens. Shiho already has a MyWay pass and is commuting to school by bus
with her host sister from Year 10, Laura Nuttal. Shiho, welcome to Telopea!
PRIMARY NEWS
The season of spring has started! Let’s hope the winter coughs and colds will also be over.
This week we welcome back Robin Egerton. During such changes, teaching staff have the opportunity for acting roles. We
sincerely thank Kathy Solomko and Aminah Kazak for their leadership during Robin’s absence.
Several special events have recently show-cased the musical and artistic talents of our staff, parents and students. The beautiful
and emotive 2015 Wakakirri ‘Plasticity’ performance has successfully reached the ACT Grand Final stage. Tickets for the Grand
Final on Tuesday 8th September are sold out! We are very proud of all our students and are grateful to Cathy Marot for her
enthusiasm and imagination to lead such a project.
Thank you for your support and attendance at the Y3-6 Concert. Bilingual education is enhanced by a specialist music program
and we are very appreciative of Susan Cribb’s dedication in developing structured and fun music lessons. Thank you to Susan
and to all Staff in preparing our students for this concert performance. Bravo Team work!
The ‘veggie garden’ project has been evolving very enthusiastically. The donated seeds and tools are being put to good use and
the warmer days will add to the excitement of planting and watching seeds grow. This is a life-long learning opportunity. Thank
you to everyone involved with the extra garden care.
We ask for parent support in ensuring that all K-6 students are bringing their broad-brimmed hats every day. We are a Sun
Smart school and ‘Hats-on’ recommenced in August. Due to the cold weather many students have worn beanies in August,
however, now students must wear hats during outside play and activity. Research shows that it is the sun exposure when we are
young that may cause skin cancer issues in later life. Help us to teach our students sun-smart habits for life.
The remainder of this month will see a busy learning time as teachers continue interesting projects and we look forward to
sharing them with you at the end of the term.
Please continue to support us in the regular request for
-
Timely arrival to class. Playground supervision starts at 8.30 am.
Checking for Lost Property. Unclaimed and unnamed items are moved to the Clothing store.
Safe, respectful and legal traffic behaviour at drop-off and pick-up time.
