Un ordre carcéral absolu règne en maître dans un État totalitaire d’un
nouveau genre, fondé sur la « séparation préventive » des asociaux,
repérés puis enfermés dès leur plus jeune âge. Au sein de cet univers,
se distingue la prison de Schendorff, mastodonte pénitentiaire. Linz, un
avocat mal vu du régime y est enfermé arbitrairement. Il ignore en fait
qu’il n’est qu’un rouage au sein d’un plan insensé mis en œuvre par F.
un faux détenu infiltré à Schendorff, et travaillant en réalité pour le toutpuissant Ministère des Libertés et des Privations publiques....
Sous la double influence de Borges et de Kafka, ce premier roman extrêmement maitrisé, au style d’une grande élégance littéraire, concis, serré, presque clinique, se présente comme une exploration vertigineuse
centrée sur le thème du faux et du factice.
Ancien élève de l’École normale supérieur, Luis Seabra est pianistecompositeur et professeur de piano.

Trajectory Chemistry
From its birth to its death, in 33 days and 37 chapters, following the
necessary order of prime numbers, a fly traces its trajectories on a
Parisian windowsill, influenced by light, smells, the wind and other
chemical or geological factors. Inviting itself inside that same Parisian
apartment building, into the home of one family in particular, between
the son Adami’s unfinished hamburger, the leg of lamb his mother’s
preparing and the chicken kibble that the woman boxer across the
hall feeds her dog, it shares their daily lives with us, from the trivial
moments to the intimate ones, weaving their threads together until
the dramatic dénouement.
We soon realize that through the insect’s diffracted eye, the author is
painting an offbeat portrait of humanity adrift, its hopes crumbling
and dissolving in accordance with the blind random flux of material
chemistry.

contre des adversaires imaginaires. C’est une chorégraphie de la violence,
établie et fixe, minutieusement codifiée, qui doit être exécutée en un
temps donné.
Encadrés par deux saluts, les douze chapitres de ce livre respectent rigoureusement les mouvements des douze kata communs aux différentes
écoles de sabre japonais.
Mais qu’arrive-t-il quand la littérature s’immisce dans la pratique du

Hélène est la petite-nièce de Daniel Roche, l’auteur, sous le pseudonyme
de H. R. Sanders, d’une fameuse série de romans d’aventures à succès,
La Marque noire. Quand elle s’installe à Paris pour y étudier l’archéologie,
l’écrivain lui prête sa chambre de bonne. Elle est alors amenée à fréquenter
ce personnage un peu loufoque qu’elle n’apprécie guère et dont elle n’a
jamais lu les livres. Son ami Guillaume en est, lui, un lecteur fanatique et
tente de l’initier à sa passion.
En se prenant au jeu des histoires de La Marque noire, celle-ci va bientôt
être happée par une aventure d’un tout autre genre : elle va mettre au jour
des pans enfouis de l’enfance et de la jeunesse de Daniel et, dans le sillage,

Hélène is the grand-niece of Daniel Roche, who, under the pen name

spend more time with this older relative who she’s never really cared for

Une femme décide de tout abandonner. De lâcher sa famille, ses enfants,
tous ceux qu’elle aime, les lieux où elle vit. Plus rien ne prend en elle : sa vie
devient un désert, un vide. Elle est en train de disparaître.
Elle s’en va, prend le large sur un bateau pour se perdre dans le grand
poème de la mer. L’océan la console, la rend insubmersible : elle s’y noie,
mais il ne la noie pas. Elle fait naufrage, s’enfonce dans l’onde, mais ne
s’effraie pas : arrivé de nulle part, un navire sauve cette femme à la mer.
L’équipage, le capitaine, jours et nuits vont se relayer et lui murmurer leurs
propres histoires. Des histoires de voyages, de séparations, de familles au
loin, de ports. Elle va revivre, doucement, fragile, incertaine, grâce aux histoires de ces hommes nomades.

her children, everyone she loves, the places she lives. Nothing takes their
place: her life becomes a desert, a vacuum. She is gradually disappearing.
She leaves, heading off on a boat to lose herself in the great poem of
the sea. The ocean soothes and consoles her, makes her unsinkable: she
is drowning in it, but she doesn’t drown. She is shipwrecked, taken by
the waves, but has no fear: out of nowhere, a ship arrives and saves this
‘woman overboard’. Night and day, the captain and crew take turns at
her side, whispering the stories of their own lives. Stories of travel and
separation, of distant families, of seaports. Thanks to these nomadic
men’s stories, she will slowly regain a fragile, uncertain hold on life.

The Absent
Entre Beyrouth et Paris, la narratrice nous livre le récit d’une vie commencée sous les auspices d’une enfance heureuse, brutalement brisée par la
guerre et l’exil. Elle le fait à travers les portraits de ceux qu’elle nomme les
« absents », personnages qui ont croisé son parcours à différents moments
et ont disparu. Leurs noms ont figuré un temps dans un carnet d’adresses,
puis ont été biffés ou effacés au gré des circonstances, des brouilles, des
disputes, des changements d’itinéraire, des décès. On s’aperçoit au fil des
pages que ces portraits entretissés, toujours vivaces et précis, dessinent en
négatif l’image volatile de celle qui les brosse, hantée par une absence de
soi qui se nourrit des vertiges de la mémoire. Car loin de toute confession
anecdotique, c’est bien du lien ténu entre les êtres, à la fois incarné et
immatériel, dont nous parle ce roman qui défie les lois admises de l’autobiographie.
From Beirut to Paris, the narrator describes a life begun under the
pleasant auspices of a happy childhood, which is brutally shattered
by war and exile. She does it through portraits of those she calls the
“absent”– people she encountered at different times who have now
disappeared. Their names were jotted into her address book, then crossed out or erased due to changing circumstances, disagreements, arguments, changes of itinerary or death. We gradually come to see that
these lively and precise interwoven portraits create a kind of volatile
negative image of the author, who is haunted by a self-absence that is
nourished by the exaltation of memory. This is not a series of anecdotal
confessions; the subject of this novel, which defies the laws of autobiography, is the delicate ties – both incarnated and immaterial – between
human beings.

Un mystérieux événement s’est déroulé en 1962 à Yonge, petite ville de
Charente-Maritime, dans le cours de Mme Leprince. Cinquante ans plus
tard, Julian Dransfield, un journaliste anglais, décide de se rendre sur place
pour mener l’enquête auprès des derniers témoins. Ceux-ci lui révèlent
l’existence d’un étrange petit garçon, Oscar, Parisien arrivé en cours d’année scolaire, étrangement disparu après les faits… Dans une atmosphère
troublante, un va-et-vient temporel subtil et efficace se noue entre l’enquête policière de Julian et les événements qui se sont déroulés plusieurs
décennies auparavant dans cette bourgade charentaise.
Nous tenant en haleine tout au long du roman, en ménageant le suspens
jusqu’au bout, l’auteur parvient avec brio à camper des situations énigmatiques qui se nourrissent de l’ambiguïté des liens affectifs entre les protagonistes.
A mysterious event took place in 1962 in Yonge, a small town on the
west coast of France, in Mme Leprince’s class. Decades later, Julian
Dransfield, an English journalist, goes to Yonge to question the few surviving eyewitnesses. They reveal the existence of Oscar, a strange little
boy who had moved there from Paris in the middle of the school year.
Oddly, Oscar disappeared after the incident… The atmosphere quickly
becomes disturbing, as the tale goes subtly yet effectively back and
forth in time, from Julian’s investigation to the events that took place a
lifetime ago in this sleepy little town.
The suspense never goes down in this page-turner. The author skillfully
creates enigmatic situations that are made even more so by the web of
relations between the protagonists.

à des thérapies de groupe dirigées par un psychiatre renommé. Le jeune
inspecteur Clarence Cooper va infiltrer ce groupe en se faisant passer

pour Cooper, cette mission va se transformer en une descente aux enfers...

Bob Dumont est un super agent secret de la grande époque de la Guerre

profit, merchandising, études de marché; reste-t-il la moindre place pour un
auteur sincère, fût-il d’un talent discutable ? D’un autre côté, le 110e épisode des aventures de Bob Dumont n’est-il pas celui de trop ? En découvrant le premier chapitre le plus effroyablement mauvais de ces trente dernières années, l’éditeur de la série Dumont, au bord de l’apoplexie, décide
d’entrer dans le roman afin de sauver ce qui peut encore l’être.

grande part, dans le rapport que nous avons avec les choses.

Look at the walls in a city: they are bursting with texts and images telling us how to live better, how to be ourselves, how to be moral. If you
look at advertising the right way, you realize that it is the messenger
of public morals. If that’s true, then we need to pay more attention to
the connection between public space and publicity, or advertising. The
former attracts philosophers’ and sociologists’ attention; the latter incurs
moralists’ wrath. Yet advertising expresses coming morals.
In order to recognize that, we need to perform a veritable transformation of our gaze: morals are not enclosed within the relationships we
have with the people around us; it is also, and in fact for a large part,
found in the relationships we have with objects.
Emanuele Coccia invited us to think in a new way in La Vie sensible,

ou l’hermaphrodite : est-ce un problème religieux, sexuel, esthétique ? Fautil séparer, disjoindre ces problèmes ? Ou les confondre ? Est-ce un monstre
? Se pose la question de la norme et de l’anormal. Le nom d’hermaphrodite, apparu pour la première fois chez Théophraste, se retrouve de façon
plus importante chez Pline ou encore Galien. Diodore écrit : « L’origine
d’Hermaphrodite, fils de Hermès et d’Aphrodite, est, suivant les mythologues,
analogue à celle de Priape. C’est un dieu dont le corps est un mélange
d’homme et de femme, il a toute la beauté et la mollesse du corps de la
femme, en même temps que son aspect a quelque chose de mâle et de
rude. » Le ni l’un ni l’autre et les deux à la fois (la forme double) fascine
toujours. Dans cet essai, l’auteur nous invite à une promenade menant de
la pensée médicale à l’esthétique.
The question of hermaphroditism is an occasion for doctors, naturalists
and philosophers to come together and mutually enlighten each other.
Are androgynes and hermaphrodites a religious, sexual or aesthetic
issue? Should these issues be separated, disassociated? Or merged together? Are they monsters? The subject poses the question of the norm
and the abnormal. The word hermaphrodite, which first appeared in
the writings of Theophrastus, takes on greater significance in the work
of Pliny and Galen. Diodorus wrote: “The origin of Hermaphroditus, son
of Hermès and Aphrodite is, according to mythologists, analogous to
Priapus’s. He is a god whose body combines male and female. He has
the beauty and delicacy of a woman, and there is also something male
and tough about him.” That which is neither one nor the other, and
both at once (what is dual) has always been fascinating. In this essay,
the author invites us on a journey that ranges from medical thought to
aesthetics.

La pensée commune est qu’une société ne peut exister sans la direction
exercée par un pouvoir coercitif censé corriger tous les excès de comportements des hommes. Ce pouvoir a été intrinsèquement détenu par un
homme ou une instance ici dénommés despote.
Dans la mesure où le despote n’est jamais que le tyran légitimé par les
dieux, un Dieu ou le Peuple, il est encadré par une double contingence :
l’une est qu’il faut bien supposer un tyran originaire, sans légitimation, surgi
à l’improviste de quelque dégénérescence de la société dont il est issu ;
l’autre est celle où le despote se transforme en tyran, retrouvant, dans la
« folie » du pouvoir, des traits du tyran originel.
Il faudra, pour éclairer notre présent, choisir des exemples dans l’Histoire
autant ancienne que moderne. Les auteurs classiques paraissent souvent
bien plus éloquents que nombre de « théorisations » plus récentes. C’est,
en effet, que nous sommes en train de changer d’époque ; nous en voyons
une mourir sans pouvoir imaginer d’aucune façon celle qui va suivre. Mais
si, pour comprendre le passé et préparer l’avenir, les termes classiques de la
question de la société politique ont changé d’apparence, la division sociale
entre pouvoir et société, entre dominants et dominés, demeure comme
jamais opérante.
It is a common belief that society cannot exist without leadership held
by a coercive power that is meant to correct the excesses of human
behavior. This power was intrinsically held by a person or authority referred to here as the despot.
Insofar as the despot is nothing more than a tyrant legitimized by God
or the People, he is framed by a double contingency: one is the likelihood
of an original, un-legitimized tyrant, rising from some degeneration of
the society from which he sprang; the other is when the despot turns
into a tyrant, regaining, through a lust for power, the features of the
original tyrant.
In order to shed light on the present, we’ll have to choose examples
from both ancient and modern history. Classical authors are often considerably more eloquent than many more recent “theorizations”. That is
because we are in the midst of changing eras; we are witnessing the
death of one era, while still unable to imagine in any way what comes
next. But although in order to understand the past and prepare the
future, the classical terms for the issue of political society have changed
their appearance, the social divide between power and society, between
dominants and dominated, remains as operational as ever.

Enfin, cet essai montre tant par son propos que par sa méthode, comment l’histoire de l’extermination des Juifs d’Europe a peu à peu gagné le champ philosophique français,au prix d’une mésinterprétation de la pensée d’Adorno.Or ce que
Adorno définissait comme l’innommable n’était pas réductible à l’irreprésentable.
Par contre-coup, voici produite une généalogie du conflit relatif à la représentation
de l’extermination, qui déchire aujourd’hui encore nos contemporains (DidiHuberman, Lanzmann, Rancière).
This essay demonstrates the existence of metaphysical unity in the
œuvre of Adorno, but it also invents an analytical method, of which
“stridence” (a word borrowed from Malraux’s Voix du silence) is the
key concept. It is an analysis of both the odd reception of a major book
and the philosophical conflict between Lyotard and Derrida in 1980
and 1982, over Adorno. What were the effects of conceptual turbulence, mutation and displacement – of silence, too – that the German
philosopher inspired inside the works of these two French philosophers?
What were the after-effects, in constituting the perimeter of conflictive
exchange in a “doctrinal conjuncture”?
This presentation of conceptual transformations, stridence, implies a
new way of writing the history of philosophy: it takes as its starting
point for studying authors a conflict that was perpetuated covertly in
books, haunting and changing beliefs and critical thought.
Finally, this essays shows – through both its content and its method –
how the history of the extermination of European Jews gradually affected the field of French philosophy, at the cost of a misinterpretation of
Adorno’s critical thought. For what Adorno defined as the “unnamable”
was not reducible to the unrepresentable. In response, here is a genealogy of the conflict relative to the representation of that extermination, which still divides our contemporaries (Didi-Huberman, Lanzmann,
Rancière).

In the Name of the Indians
At the beginning of the 16th century, in the wake of the conquistadores, Dominican, Franciscan and Augustinian monks were the first men of the cloth to
set foot in the New World. Acting under the Roman pontiff’s benediction, they
had one single mission : to evangelize conquered populations. For the next
three centuries, the history of these religious orders would be shaped by the
hopes, conflicts and doubts that the matter of the Indians’ place in the American colonial world kept raising in Spain. In the field, though, the problems
the missionaries had to overcome in order to deliver their religious message
led them to become familiar with the indigenous people’s history and culture,
adapt their catechisms and learn local languages, to the very extent that they
became the Indians’ spokesmen. It was thus on their behalf that, along with
Bartolome de Las Casas, they pleaded the Indians’ cause to the Crown, and
fought against the settlers’ pro-slavery positions.
Once the 17th century had begun, Jesuits soon came to play a central part
in this new society. Under their leadership, all orders were reinstated in their
primary mission, and once again explored new paths towards evangelization.
The Society of Jesus itself founded many missions in the empire’s farthest outposts, in Chile, in Argentina, in Paraguay. The Society’s brutal eviction at the
end of the 18th century came as the turning point for the missionaries, a time
of clashes, as for Latin America, it marked the beginning of the Wars of Independence (1810-1824).
Professor of Spanish-American Studies at the Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris III University,
Bernard Lavallé specializes in the impact of colonization on Latin American societies.
He has written over a dozen previous books on the subject, including three of which
that were published by Payot.

par le duc de La Rochefoucauld et le maréchal d’Estrées. Elle les range
avec humour en trois catégories : les « payeurs », les « martyrs » – ses

Ninon de Lenclos (1623-1705) is a legendary courtesan. Born during
the reign of Louis XIII, she lived most of her life in Louis XIV’s time,
dying as a still admired octogenarian in her mansion in the center of
Paris.
The list of her lovers is long, from Richelieu to Louis de Bourbon (the
“Grand Condé”) via the Duke of La Rochefoucauld and François d’Estrées, Marshall of France. She mischievously sorted them into three
categories: the “payers”, the “martyrs” – those who pined for her
hopelessly – and the “caprices” – the lovers she truly cared for. But
her total freedom – both of lifestyle and of language – disturbed the
devout, who accused her of impiety and managed to get her sent to a
convent for two years. Once she regained her freedom, she held a salon
– her “five to nine”, as she called it, which attracted both literary lights
(Perrault, Molière, Voltaire) and nobles from the Court – and shrewdly
amassed a small fortune. Nevertheless, Ninon is not the literary lioness
so many earlier biographies have portrayed. A good letter-writer and
remarkable musician who excelled at both the lute and the clavichord,
she was above all a woman who liberated herself from social convention
and religious constraint, a woman who lived for pleasure – including
homosexuality – and never married. An epicurean woman who was
unique in her time.
