For the collec*ons of the Maison Européenne de la
Photographie*, Charlo;e Rampling and Tilda Swinton become
picture holders. The portraits and landscapes of Irving Penn,
Richard Avedon and Brassai – to name but a few – hang from
their arms like the replica images of a vulnerable museum or
gallery.Inturn,theyholdouttotheaudienceoriginalprintsthat
have made the history and iconography of the twen*eth
century. While one serves as a fragile support for large-scale
images,theotherholdsupamirrortoher.
Gazes play between the two but also with the eyes of the
departedonesimmortalisedontheargen*cpaper.
There is also a play on bodies too. Not only those of the black
andwhitephotographedsilhoue;esbrandishedatarm'slength,
butalsothoseofRamplingandSwinton.
Therearewallsinmuseums,andelsewhere,whichcrackunder
the weight of artworks. The façades of flesh created by the
bodiesalsobendundertheweightoftheimages.Someofthem
admitdefeatandbecome,accordingtoaprincipleofinversion,
thepropsandeaselsforRamplingandSwinton'sartworkbodies.
Gradually,theblackandwhitephotographsdisappearunderthe
blacks and whites of faded phantom images. Shadows of
overexposed shots, of which only the original formats remain,
carbon spectra bereS of all their subjects, the monochrome
canvases hung by Rampling and Swinton are a framework for
newlyemergingphotographsofthemselves.Theirvoicescap*on
thesaturatedportraitsandblindedlandscapes.
