Artist Biography :
Floris Jespers was a Belgian painter and watercolourist, well-known for his églomisés or glass paintings. He was
the brother of the renowned sculptor Oscar Jespers. He received his artistic education at the NHISKA in 1909
under the tutorship of Franz Courtens. He started off painting landscapes and seascapes from 1910 onwards. He
met up with Paul Van Ostaijen in 1914, whom was one of the most important figures of the Antwerp avant-garde
during the 1920s. Jespers debuted with Post-Impressionist touch and gradually evolved towards Cubism,
Abstraction and constructive poëtic Expressionism until the late 1920s. After 1930 he created rather a more Intimist
oeuvre under the influence of Marc Chagall and Heinrich Campendonck. Jespers became a member of "Sélection"
in 1920, as well as of "Kunst van Heden" in 1921 and "Les Compagnons de l'Art" in 1932. He travelled between
1951 and 1957 numerous times to Belgian Congo. His Africanist oeuvre is very broad, stylized and rhythmic
constructed. He eventually became a member of the Belgian Royal Academy in 1950.
