For all Brothers!
The NZ Brothers will be having their full Zaffarancho on Thursday
March 4th 2010.
The Russell Boat Club located at Matauwhi Bay has been booked
for THURSDAY MARCH 4th 2010. We have engaged a chef and
settled on a menu. The cannon fire is at 18.00 hours. The Club is a
short walk from the Duke of Marlborough Hotel where Brothers will
be accommodated. Please note that RUSSELL and not
Whangarei is the venue for our Zaff. Russell is 1 hour drive
north of Whangarei.
Also on Thursday, March 4th, there is a cruise on the Tall Ship R.
Tucker Thompson, a replica designed after halibut schooners of the
northwest American coast which were considered fast, sea kindly
and easily manned. We hope to have several Brothers’ yachts
accompanying the cruise.
As this is our Annual Zaff there may be one or two new Brothers to
induct and we guarantee a good time for all as we do battle with
wine and food.
The cost for the Zaff is $NZ 45 per person. Drinks can be purchased
from the bar at the Club - don’t bring your own.
Dress code is full pirate rig.
The NZ Brothers are hoping that a minimum of 40 visiting persons
will attend as advised on the website.
http://www.worldzaf2010.com/extended-newzealand.asp
It is planned that myself as Captain of the Table and our Vigia will
meet visiting Brothers and captives in Auckland on arrival.
Please contact me should you need any more information.

King’s Lynn, on the Norfolk
coast, has a long and illustrious
maritime tradition. It was
amongst the most significant
ports which formed the Hanseatic
League, and controlled trade in
the North Sea and the Baltic in
the Middle Ages.
It was to celebrate this long
association that the town of
King’s Lynn put on the Hanse
Festival from 30 July – 2 August
2009.
The quayside was bustling with
activity. Music, market stalls,
craft demonstrations even an old
traditional
Punch and Judy
show, all helped to give the quay
a festive atmosphere. In the
quaint old town there were
special exhibitions and concerts,
but there was no doubt that the
‘star’ of the show was a visiting
ship called “Lisa von Lübeck”
The “Lisa” has a special
significance for the Brüder der
Küste, particularly the Table of
Lübeck-Travemunde, as she was
designed and captained by
Brothers of that Table.
She is an authentic
reconstruction of a 15th century
caravelle, complete in every
essential feature, but fitted with a
huge Volvo engine, and modern
navigation equipment. ( - and
various other elements to comply
with modern Health & Safety
regulations!)
thousand members of the great
British public who visited the
“Lisa” finally disembarked, the
Brothers repaired to “The
Riverside Restaurant” for a
splendid dinner. This rounded off
a very successful Anglo/German
bran le bas.
The reconstruction of the ship
was a project of the World
Heritage Society Hanseatic City
of Lübeck. Approximately 350
people worked on the ship during
its five year construction period
(1999-2004). 240 were 19 – 25
year old, previously unskilled
young unemployed people, who

Heinz Scheel, the German
National Captain, had
“commanded” Captain Dieter to
embark a team of prospective
young Frères de la Côte(GB), the
embryonic Table of Greenwich,
as the ship entered the port of
Travemunde on its homeward
journey.
Her visit to King’s Lynn created
great interest, not least, to the
Frères de la Côte of the Tables of
Solent and East Anglia.
Peter Youngman, Grand Frère of
East Anglia, invited members of
other GB Tables to make a visit
to the East Coast to meet and
support our German Brothers
who had sailed the “Lisa” from
Lübeck to King’s Lynn. Mike
Arnold, Bryan Osborn, Fred
Bentley, Peter Adams and Jimmy
George attended with their

Dieter Baars, captain of the

of Lübeck-Travemunde, made us
very welcome on board. Also on
board was Brother Eike Lehman,
professor of maritime
architecture and designer of the
ship. He was pleased to explain
the finer points of her
construction. A ‘special’ crew
member was Brother Charlie
Brüser, a former Captain of the
“Lisa”, for whom this was his
last major trip. Mike Arnold, on
behalf of Frères de la Cote (GB)

Charlie and gifts to the other

THE TORTUGA POST
will be held at South Street Seaport with a
celebration lasting 3 days.
The festivities will start with a welcome get
together on Friday night at The Paris.
USA
50th ANNIVERSARY!
NOVEMBER 13-15, 2009 !
Just think about it -- in Whytes Restaurant on
57th Street in New York City, almost 50 years
ago, the U.S. Brotherhood began with the
formation of the New York Table.
John Pflieger writes:
” We held our first table or Zafarrancho on
November 20, 1959 at which the numbered
insignias were given out, to Bruce Robinson,
Fred Simons, Jim Munro, Jean Lacombe, Dr.
Ken Brown, Hugh Byfield, John F. Higgins, Hal
Reiff, Reinhold Klemm, Richard P. Doran,
Edward dy Prey, Fred Schlatter, Andrew Brunn.
Pflieger as Captain asked to be seconded by
nominating the following officers: Bruce
Robinson, Boatswain, Fred W. Simons, PurserSurgeon, and we drew lots to choose the seven
co-founders, besides naming Richard
McCloskey as honorary member and cofounder.”
As background, in 1873, restauranteur Henry
Meyer bought a 10 year old brick building
located at 119 South Street and opened Meyer’s
Hotel. He offered the finest accommodations in
the area. At the heart of this establishment he
constructed an elegant bar with polished woods
and sparkling mirrors. He named it the Paris
Café.
Today the U.S. Brotherhood of the Coast
consists of 12 Tables, and the 50th Anniversary
Meyer’s catered to travelers, who arrived at the
Seaport from distant lands, as well as the rich
and famous of the era. Thomas Edison is said to
have used the Paris Café as a second office while
designing the world’s first centralized power
stations on nearby Pearl Street. Annie Oakley
and Buffalo Bill Cody, as well as the famous
outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
were guests at the elegant establishment. Teddy
Roosevelt was said to have dropped in on
occasion while serving as the head of the New
York City Police department. His purpose was to
7
THE TORTUGA POST
collar officers who indulged themselves while on
duty. Ironically, less than a decade later, the
1930’s notorious crime figures Albert Anastasia
and Louis Lepke of Murder, Inc. came to the
Paris Café to convene under the dim lights and
plot the elimination of their enemies.
Saturday evening will start with cocktails in the
Gallery located on the street level amidst a
collection of ship models of all types.
Today the South Street Seaport area is the most
vital cultural center in lower Manhattan. In July
of 2000 the establishment was purchased by
John Ronaghan and Peter O’Connell, who have
slightly changed the name and brought the
establishment back to its original grandeur. The
Paris is now a landmark in the Federal Registry
of Historic Buildings. At The Paris you can
experience some of the history of New York
City along with excellent food and fine spirits. It
is still one of the most memorable stops for
many of the millions of visitors who pass
through the South Street Seaport each year.
The big event, the Saturday night celebration
dinner, is to be at the Seaman’s Church Institute.
The Seamen's Church Institute advocates for the
personal, professional, and spiritual well being
of merchant mariners around the world. The
Institute promotes safety, dignity, and improved
working and living conditions for millions of
men and women serving in the maritime
workplace. Founded in 1834, the Institute is a
voluntary, ecumenical agency affiliated with the
Episcopal Church.
We will then proceed by elevator to the Top Deck for
dinner, where a fabulous dinner by Table Tales and
many Orzas! will be waiting.
