COURSE OBJECTIVES
Kenyon French 321 Course Description:
This course is designed to provide advanced students with the opportunity to strengthen their
abilities to write, read, and speak French. The conversation component of the course will
focus on the discussion of articles from the current French and Francophone press, selected
short fiction, films, and other media. These discussions will be complemented by activities
aimed at developing the fluency in French to perform linguistically and culturally appropriate
tasks. The composition component will improve the ability to write clearly and coherently in
French. In order to foster these goals, the course will also provide a review or advanced
grammatical structures. The course will be conducted in French.
GRADING
Your grade for the course will be calculated based on the work you do for the whole
semester. Therefore, please view the 3rd 9 weeks grade as a sort of interim grade.
Semester grade will be as follows:
Participation 10% (see rubric)
Devoirs 15%
Entretien 5%
Redactions (4) 20%
Interrogations (3) 15%
Examens partiels 15%
Examen final 20%
Please note that daily attendance is crucial to success in the language classroom. Further,
students are expected to participate daily in class, and should expect to speak French in class.
Speaking is one of the core skills developed in foreign language class, therefore all students
will be required to demonstrate speaking proficiency.
NOTA BENE
Please note the following. In order to provide the best education and most rigorous
preparation for the university or professional worlds, I have implemented the following rules
and procedures:
·
NO LATE HOMEWORK. Assignments will be given in advance for each
chapter. Compositions will be submitted only once. Use BonPatron.com and your
spellcheck to help you.
·
STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO FOLLOW RHS & SCHOOL RULES.
This is an elective course; no student is obligated to be in it. Therefore, I will assume
that each student in my class is there to learn. Should a student’s behavior require my
attention, that deprives the others of instruction time. Therefore, ZERO
TOLERANCE FOR VIOLATIONS OF SCHOOL OR CLASS RULES.
·
STUDENTS MUST PROVIDE THEIR OWN CLASSROOM SUPPLIES.
STUDENTS MUST KEEP TRACK OF ALL PHOTOCOPIED PACKETS
THEY ARE GIVEN. Any student interested in purchasing the textbooks used from
an online vendor, please contact me. If it is financially possible, this may be very
helpful for you.
EXTRA HELP (TUTORING)
Students may make an appointment for tutoring if they feel they need it. I can be available
after school until 3:30 pm BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.
Please note: if you hire a tutor or seek help from a French speaker, please be advised that
you must do your own work. Work that is clearly at a higher level than a student’s
capabilities will be regarded as plagiarized and will receive a zero (0). USE OF ONLINE
TRANSLATORS IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. SPELL-CHECK & GRAMMARCORRECT ARE ACCEPTABLE.
PROGRAM
Students ought to be prepared to write and speak spontaneously in class in French.
Participation in discussions and debates, as well as oral presentations, are part of the course.
All students are learning, and no one should fear speaking because they do not want to make
mistakes – this is part of the learning process.
DEVOIRS: In addition to the redactions (compositions), there will be nightly written and/or
reading assignments to prepare for the topics of the next day’s class. Students are expected to
spend 30-60 minutes preparing for each class. Homework may be checked orally, or by
collecting. There will be several assignments which will require internet/email access.
