What Are We Going Towards?

T
he Year of Faith is soon coming to an end. But, as the first encyclical
of Pope Francis (a collective work of two popes) reminds us, our faith
adventure continues! This encyclical, “The Light of Faith”, responds to
the fundamental question concerning the future of creation and the great
adventure of humanity. Faith is “a light that illumines their entire
journey”. We are not alone on this journey since from the time of Abraham,
many have walked towards the Promised Land.
The Bible provides a myriad of images to portray the afterlife, that
face-to-face with God, Eternal Love. Some images describe the communitarian aspect of heaven as a banquet, a wedding or a Celestial Jerusalem
that descends from heaven. Let us not forget the liturgical celebrations
honouring the Lamb from the book of Revelation.
We are walking towards the “fullness of communion” with the
cosmos, with all of humanity and especially with God, in the mystery of
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We cannot move towards our goal without looking into the past and
remembering what we have received from God. Nor can we forget to look at
the present through eyes of faith and discern the signs of the Kingdom. We
also need to look to a future of hope, manifested in a glorified Christ, a
summation of all of creation through Christ. Beginnings and endings (“the
fullness of creation in God”) are tied together in our act of faith which
becomes the dynamism that inspires us in the present.
The end of time shall be a crowning moment as after a birth. A veil
shall be lifted and the risen Christ will appear; not alone but the totality of
the Body of Christ which has been forming throughout history.
And then, according to Gustave Martelet “the cosmos will become
the vessel of God’s glory”, an immense alleluia.
Let us end this reflection with a prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours
(3rd Sunday, Saturday evening) “He will come: one evening will be the last
evening of all. First, there will be silence and then a hymn will burst forth.
A song of praise shall be the initial word of the new dawn.” So will be the
end and the beginning.
