Dit kwartaal hebben de Galerijen opnieuw heel wat te bieden aan toeristen
en Brusselaars!
For the current quarter, the Galleries are
once again showing things of great interest to both tourists and the citizens
of Brussels.
Voorzitter van de Koninklijke
Sint-Hubertusgalerijen.
Zo wordt één van de duurste manuscripten ter wereld, «Le Manifeste du
Surréalisme» van André Breton onder
andere getoond in het Museum der letteren en manuscripten dat zijn nieuwe
tentoonstelling wijdt aan het surrealisme en de rol van het beeld in deze essentiële beweging voor de 20ste eeuw.

L’un des manuscrits les plus chers au
monde, «Le Manifeste du Surréalisme»
d’André Breton, est entre autres présenté
au Musée des lettres et manuscrits qui
consacre sa nouvelle exposition au surréalisme et au rôle de l’image dans ce
mouvement essentiel du XXe siècle.
En septembre, le Cinéma accueillera son
nouveau bar et différentes expositions
prendront place dans ses 1.000 m2 sous
la Galerie de la Reine.
En septembre toujours, lors des Journées
du Patrimoine, la verrière et l’ancestral
bureau des Galeries seront exceptionnellement ouverts au public! L’occasion de se
plonger dans une partie de l’histoire de ce
bâtiment remarquable.
Par ailleurs, au niveau des enseignes
commerciales, il y aura deux nouvelles
extensions: Neuhaus augmentera en
septembre la gamme de ses produits et
de ses activités, dans l’espace adjacent à
la boutique actuelle. Et Rolex associé à
d’autres marques élargira ses quartiers à
la Galerie de la Reine en automne.
Enfin, derrière les murs, de nouveaux appartements ont été rénovés. Dépêchezvous, ils n’attendent plus que les derniers
occupants!

One of the world’s most valuable manuscripts, «Surrealist Manifesto», by André
Breton, is among the treasures presented at the Museum of Letters and Manuscripts in a new exhibition devoted to
surrealism and the role of the image in
this vital movement of the 20th century.
In september opent de Cinema zijn
nieuwe bar. Er vinden ook verschillende
tentoonstellingen plaats in de 1.000 m²
onder de Koninginnegalerij.
In September, the Cinema will have a
new bar, and various shows will take
place in its 1,000 m2 of exhibition space
under the Galerie de la Reine.
In september zullen verder, tijdens de
Erfgoeddagen, het glazen daken het
oude kantoor van de Galerijen bij wijze
van uitzondering voor het publiek worden opengesteld. Een perfecte gelegenheid om zich te verdiepen in een stukje
van de geschiedenis van dit opmerkelijke gebouw.

Days, the atrium and the ancestral office
of the Galleries will, exceptionally, be
open to the public. An excellent opportunity to plunge into some of the history of this remarkable building.
Verder komen er bij de winkels twee
nieuwe uitbreidingen: in september zal
Neuhaus zijn productengamma en zijn
activiteiten uitbreiden naar de ruimte
naast de huidige shop. Rolex zal samen
met andere merken in de herfst zijn
onderkomen in de Koninginnegalerij
vergroten.
Achter de muren werden tenslotte ook
nieuwe appartementen gerenoveerd.
Haast u, het is nog wachten op de laatste nieuwe bewoners!

Considered as an institution in Brussels, the Belgian
Lace Manufactory offers a wide range of products
made by hand in strict accordance with Belgian tradition. It is also one of the rare sources of expertise and
advice on the subject.
It is difficult to talk about lace without recalling the rivalry, between the 16th and 19th centuries, which divided the lace-making towns of Brussels, Bruges and Binche and those of northern France. It was in this context of competition and inspiration
that each aspect reached maturity, while the tradition sustained
the Belgian Lace Manufactory. Created in 1810, well before the
construction of the Galeries Royales St-Hubert, the boutique belonged to the same family for three generations. The work is still
done using the traditional techniques, by hand or using spindles,
with production sometimes requiring several months. Products
include wedding veils, fans, monogrammed handkerchiefs, table centres, coasters, key holders, etc.
The lace which once adorned the clothing of the
well-off has now spread throughout society and
evolved towards household and table decoration.

« had always been interested in old jewellery. I collected stones as a child. At the age of 15 I was buying beautiful objects. Then I quite naturally moved
on to studying archaeology and the history of art,
but I soon began to prefer the antiques business to
academic studies, which to my mind did not seem to
pay sufficient attention to the minor arts. My preference was for decorative objects of all types.»
After 5 years of working for different antique dealers
in Paris, Philippe Nivarlet branched out on his own.
The period which interested him most was from 1850
to 1950.
«It was the richest and most diversified period in
terms
of materials and how shapes were created. In 100
years, we saw something like 10 distinct styles! From
Napoleon III to a Japanese-like style and covering
the 30’s and 40’s and the Art Deco period – artistic
possibilities changed so much!» .

Interview
Bob, Dorian Charlier et Ben
Mokafé bestaat al sinds de jaren ‘30. Het is één van de onontbeerlijke
ontmoetingsplaatsen van het stadscentrum geworden. We ontmoeten
de zaakvoerder, Bob Charlier.
Hoe is uw familie eigenaar geworden van dit café?
«Bij het overlijden van de eigenaars
heeft mijn vader de zaak in de jaren
‘60 overgenomen maar mijn oudoom
werkte er al vanaf de opening. Ik nam
in 1973 de zaak over, dat is nu bijna
40 jaar geleden. Sinds een 15-tal jaar
werkt mijn zoon Dorian met mij samen. Aanvankelijk woonde ik 10 jaar
lang boven het pand. Maar er was
plaats tekort. Het appartement werd
dan ook verbouwd tot een kantoor en
een keuken.
Hoe zou u uw klanten omschrijven?
Onze klantengroep is erg gevarieerd.
Iedereen komt hier naartoe. We hebben een grote groep vaste klanten,
kinderen en kleinkinderen van de oor-
spronkelijke klanten. Daarnaast zijn
er natuurlijk ook politieke figuren,
toeristen en de echte Brusseleer met
zijn hond. Elke dag komen hier gemiddeld meer dan 500 mensen langs.
Wat was Mokafé oorspronkelijk?
Het was een koffiehuis waar de koffie nog ter plaatse gebrand werd, waar
nu de bar in de etalage staat. Men serveerde koffie, thee, broodjes met kaas
en gebak, die gepresenteerd werden
voor de ramen.
Maar beetje bij beetje is daar een kleine kaart bijgekomen: wafels, pannenkoeken en steeds meer typisch Brusselse gerechten. Het decor is maar
weinig geëvolueerd want die bezorgt
deze plek zijn charme; we blijven
koffie met speculaas serveren om de
traditie in ere te houden.

Sa proximité avec le théâtre des
Galeries en a fait aussi le lieu
privilégié de nombreux comédiens de passages: Jean Marais, Thierry le Luron, Philippe
Noiret… Un Maigret a été tourné
en partie là, ainsi qu’ «Oscar et
la dame rose» d’Eric-Emmanuel
Schmitt, plusieurs Hercule Poirot, le célèbre détective d’Agatha
Christie, avec notamment Charlotte Rampling. On ne compte
plus le nombre de reportages
pour lesquel la terrasse a servi
de plateau. Pensons à Michel
Drucker, Umberto Eco, Sœur
Emmanuelle, et bien d’autres
encore, sans compter les télévisions locales et nationales.

Cette exposition retrace les prémices du surréalisme et la
théorisation du mouvement mise au point par André Breton.
L’exposition met l’accent sur l’image surréaliste. Elle évoque
les rapports à l’image à travers des documents rares et remarquables: lettres, manuscrits, dessins, tableaux, photographies
de Giorgio de Chirico, Man Ray, René Magritte, Salvador Dali,
André Masson, Hans Bellmer, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Paul
Delvaux, Marcel Duchamp ou encore Paul Nougé, Louis Scutenaire...
Pour la première fois, l’exposition est aussi l’occasion de découvrir les dessins originaux que Salvador Dali a réalisés avec

société, la pièce est ambigüe, Créon est sans illusion sur la
politique mais il fait son devoir. Antigone se dresse contre le
roi par nécessité, pour gueuler un désespoir, un vide intérieur.
Elle défend les lois tacites du devoir moral. Son exemple et
son courage, pour désespérés qu’ils soient, sont éternels.
Antigone werd in 1942 geschreven en weerspiegelt de tragedie die zich toen afspeelde. Vandaag verliezen de ideologieën overal ter wereld hun ziel maar sommige bieden weerstand. Zo wordt dit stuk opnieuw brandend actueel. Het stuk
is ambigu zoals onze samenleving zelf, Creoon maakt zich
geen illusies over de politiek, hij ziet het als zijn plicht. Antigone komt in opstand tegen de koning uit noodzaak, om
haar wanhoop te uiten, de leegte die zij vanbinnen voelt. Zij
verdedigt de stilzwijgende wetten van de morele plicht. Haar
voorbeeld en haar moed, hoe wanhopig ook, zijn eeuwigdurend.
Written in 1942, Antigone is a reflection of the tragedy which
was unfolding at that time. Now that ideologies are losing
their souls at the four corners of the planet, some are resisting and the work returns to an incredible modernity. Like
modern society, the play is ambiguous. Créon has no illusions
about politics, but does his duty. Antigone rebels against the
king out of necessity, to shout about her despair and inner
emptiness. She defends the tacit rules of moral duty. Her
example and courage, as despairing as they are, are eternal.

Tous les 2 ans, un tapis de fleurs est déroulé sur la Grand’Place.
Cette année, c’est l’Afrique qui est mis à l’honneur!
De 9h à 23h, vision panoramique via le balcon de l’Hôtel
de Ville (sauf le dimanche fermeture à 18h), tous les soirs
à 22h, 22h30 et 23h: son et lumière.
Cet événement est l’occasion rêvée de (re-)découvrir les richesses des musées de Bruxelles dans une ambiance détendue et à un prix démocratique. La gastronomie est à l’honneur
en 2012: des visites guidées gourmandes, des animations et
des ateliers. Chaque jeudi de 17 à 22h - à Bruxelles, dans
55 musées (3/1,50€/gratuit).

Cette année, c’est «l’art de construire» qui a été choisi pour
thème. Difficile donc de passer à côté des Galeries Royales
Saint-Hubert… où seront exceptionnellement accessibles la
verrière et les bureaux de la société civile qui gèrent les lieux.
Visites guidées sam. et dim. de 10h à 18h, Rendez-vous au
n° 5 galerie du Roi.
Dit jaar werd als thema «bouwkunst» gekozen. Men kon dus
niet voorbijgaan aan de Koninklijke Sint-Hubertusgalerijen ...
waar bij wijze van uitzondering het glazen dak en de oude
kantoren van de maatschappij die hier al altijd de beheert.
Geleid bezoek op zat en zon van 10 tot 18u, afspraak op
nr. 5 Koningsgalerij.

The Art of Building”
a legacy
B
This year’s Heritage Days are shining the spot-
light on engineering and the technical solutions
to construction problems which have enabled
architecture to progress over the centuries. The
Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert were thus one of
the essential buildings to be presented during
the two days.
The monumental atrium, which will exceptionally be
open on the day, is just one result of a real achievement for the 1830’s. The industrial revolution produced new materials, including iron and glass, which
had already (in part) demonstrated their potential 10
years previously in the Orleans Gallery constructed at
the Royal Palace in Paris. The timber framework of the
atrium was replaced by metal a structure. In his initial plans, Jean-Pierre Cluysenaer, the architect of the
Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, regularly refers to that
Gallery and its atrium.
Although very different, both the atriums have a
common essential role in letting light penetrate and
protecting strollers from the bad weather. Another
important innovation is the glass panels arranged in
superimposed fish scales: the ventilation space between them prevents any problem of condensation.

During the Heritage Days, the offices of the Société
Civile des Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert can also be
visited, enabling visitors to understand how this heritage monument of 40,000 m2 is managed. The management is undertaken by descendants of the founding families of the Galleries, who have always sought
to conserve the atmosphere created by Cluysenaer
i.e. bringing together all the functions of the city in
a prestigious location and thus creating an urban microcosm.

La comédie urbaine déménage...
Cette longue fresque en terre cuite, exposée dans
les anciens souterrains des Galeries, a pris place à
l’étage du théâtre du Vaudeville.
Invité à créer cette œuvre par les Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, l’artiste anglais Paul Day, installé en Bourgogne, sillonne
à vélo les rues de Bruxelles durant l’été 1998, et tombe sous
le charme de la ville. Fin observateur, il découvre les multiples
facettes de la vie de Bruxelles et de ses habitants et les transpose avec force et humour dans cette terracotta. Il lui donne le
nom de «Comédie Urbaine», dont le titre rend hommage, à la
«Comédie humaine» de Balzac.
On y retrouve l’histoire de cette capitale belge et européenne,
mais aussi le quotidien parfois banal, parfois critique, mais
toujours amusé. Ainsi, il compare avec finesse le bétail envoyé
aux abattoirs avec les navetteurs se rendant sans enthousiasme
à leur travail. Cette œuvre, très riche, aborde aussi bien des
thèmes historiques, culturels, que des problèmes humains ou
urbanistiques, tels la bruxellisation.
Passionné par les Maîtres de la Renaissance, Paul Day façonne
la terre cuite en hauts-reliefs afin de donner vie à des scènes urbaines. Il travaille aussi le bronze. Il a notamment réalisé l’œuvre
«the Battle of Britain» ou encore, récemment, «The Meeting
Place» pour l’inauguration de la Gare St-Pancras à Londres.

«De surrealistische vonk» rond het beeld.
Om de creatieve vlam van het surrealisme aan te
wakkeren, ligt er een document aan de oorsprong
van deze fundamentele beweging uit de 20e eeuw:
het «Manifest van het surrealisme» van André Breton… Het zal voor de eerste keer in België worden
voorgesteld in het Museum der letteren en manuscripten (MlmB). Rond stichtende documenten vindt
de notie van het beeld, uitgedrukt door Dalí, Magritte, Ernst en vele anderen, haar volle betekenis. Ontmoeting met Jean-Christophe Hubert, conservator
van het MlmB en curator van de tentoonstelling.
Wat is de rode draad door deze tentoonstelling?
Het beeld! Het beeld speelt een fundamentele rol
in de surrealistische beweging. Met de definitie van
André Breton als vertrekpunt gaat de tentoonstelling op zoek naar de technieken die de verschillende
kunstenaars gebruikten om deze stichtende teksten
in artistieke uitingen te vertalen. Het surrealisme
stelde totale vrijheid, spontaniteit en dromen centraal… Kortom de wil om zonder belemmeringen of
beperkingen te scheppen. Zo zien we bijvoorbeeld
werken van Joan Miró die in trance kindertekeningen maakte. Max Ernst werkte op zijn beurt met de
‘frottage’-techniek. Hij legde zijn papier op een houten vloer en wreef er net zo lang met potlood over
tot er onverwachte vormen tevoorschijn kwamen. En
wat Magritte betreft, waren we al bekend met zijn
vrije associaties die vaak ongebruikelijke beelden
combineerden.

Wat zijn de belangrijkste werken van de tentoonstelling?
Het «Manifest van het surrealisme» van André Breton
en de tekeningen die Dalí maakte voor het project
van de korte animatiefilm «Destino». Het «Manifest»

, dat tijdens de tentoonstelling ook te zien is, werden in 2008 door Aristophil,
onze mecenas, aangekocht voor een bedrag van
3.600.000 euro. Wat «Destino» betreft, gaat het om
het storyboard van het verhaal over de liefde tussen een danseres en een baseballspeler. Deze wonderbaarlijke reeks tekeningen vindt zijn oorsprong
in een ontmoeting uit 1946 tussen Walt Disney en
Salvador Dalí, die het project hadden opgevat om
samen een tekenfilm te maken.
Maar dat is nog niet alles. In totaal zullen er zo’n 150
stukken te zien zijn. Brieven, manuscripten, boeken,
tijdschriften maar ook talloze schilderijen afkomstig
uit privécollecties die rechtstreeks verband houden
met de manuscripten. «De surrealistische vonk», van
17/07 tot 21/10, van dinsdag tot vrijdag van 10.00
tot 19.00 uur, in het weekend van 11.00 tot 18.00
uur.

Aan deze tentoonstelling zijn een catalogus, een pedagogisch dossier voor kinderen en twee workshops
(zie hieronder) verbonden. De eerste workshop gaat
over de surrealistische technieken, de tweede over
filmkunst, aangepast aan de allerkleinsten.

Ragoût de coquilles Saint-Jacques &Les

diable

Ingrédients pour 4 personnes
8 gambas avec tête
8 coquilles St. Jaques
Brocoli
Choux-fleur
Haricots
Jeunes carottes
Petits pois
Pour la sauce : un trait de cognac
1 cuillère à café de concentré de
tomates
2 dl de bisque
2 dl de crème
1 piment oiseau (2 si très endiablé!)
Carcasses de gambas
2 échalotes
Préparation et mise en place
Blanchissez tous les légumes séparément dans de l’eau
bouillante salée, en les laissant croquants.
Décortiquez les gambas, et réservez les carcasses. Incisez
légèrement le dos des gambas pour enlever le petit intestin
noir.
Dans une poêle bien chaude, mettez de l’huile et faites sauter les échalotes émincées avec les carcasses de gambas
quelques minutes puis flambez-les avec du cognac, ajoutez
le concentré de tomates, versez la bisque et faites réduire
5 min, avant de rajouter la crème. Cuisez encore 5 min et
passez le tout au chinois fin, retirez du feu et réservez. Rectifiez l’assaisonnement avec du sel, poivre et piment oiseau
selon votre goût.
Au moment de l’envoi
Saisissez les gambas et les coquilles Saint-Jacques dans une poêle bien chaude. Attention, ne
faites pas cuire trop les gambas et les coquilles St-Jacques pour éviter qu’elles soient caoutchouteuses! Réchauffez les légumes à part. Réchauffez votre sauce que vous aviez réservé et terminer
par monter au beurre (avec de petites noix de beurre frais).
Dans une assiette, dressez les gambas, les coquilles et versez votre mélange de légumes sur les coquilles et gambas
et nappez le tout de la sauce diable. Ce plat peut être accompagné de pommes de terre vapeur ou de riz.

Les «Misérables» de Victor Hugo fêtaient leurs 150 ans. Dans
le cadre de l’année de la gastronomie, Brusselicious organisait
dans les galeries un grand buffet semblable à celui qui avait été
concocté à l’époque de la sortie de ce grand succès. Les Galeries, lieu où Victor Hugo aimait à se retrouver avec d’autres
intellectuels, ont été choisies pour célébrer cet anniversaire.

Brusselicious organiseerde in het kader van het jaar van de gastronomie een groot buffet naar het voorbeeld van wat werd bereid toen dit grote succes voor het eerst uitkwam. De Galerijen,
de plaats waar Victor Hugo zo graag andere intellectuelen ontmoette, werden gekozen om deze verjaardag te vieren.
