Dear friends, As a medical doctor, I was asked to
Dear friends, As a medical doctor, I was asked to explain a bit more the medical circumstances in the death of baby Prasa and her mother Savita three days later. First of all, the final conclusions on the investigation have not yet been made and are expected for February. It is a difficult situation. A 17 weeks pregnant woman presents herself with back pain in a hospital. Doctors soon establish that she is miscarrying, her cervix is dilated and amniotic fluid is leaking, but the child is still alive. This is a dangerous situation: the baby can get infected and die. The mother can get infected as well. What has happened? The baby dies four days later and her remains are removed instantly. Three days later the mother dies of a septicaemia due to a multi-resistant E coli bacteria. Normally in such a case the mother is instantly upon arrival given antibiotics for protecting her and her baby from infections. But since it was a multiresistent bacteria these antibiotics didn’t do anything. Mais parce que la bactérie était multiple résistent, l’antibiotique n’avait aucun effet Studies on the use immuneglobulines in the treatment of a septicaemia with shock don’t give good results: people die in 30-60% of the cases. Survival rates for a pregnant woman are definitely not better! Even with the right antibiotics people die very easily from a septic shock. Fortunately this complication doesn’t happen often in our modern clinics. Still, we do have to investigate carefully what happened and in particular how she contracted the infection and when. Was she miscarrying because of an infection from her urinary tract? Did she get infected whilst she was in the hospital and her child was still alive? Or did she contract a hospital bacteria when they removed the remains of her baby? Personally I know about a baby in the same situation. She was 18 weeks and her mother lost the amniotic fluid. The mother refused an abortion, because her child was still alive. She stayed in the hospital untill the baby was 31 weeks old, and then she had her perfectly healthy baby after a caesarian. Wouldn’t it have been terrible if the doctors had aborted her? We have to look further; How are Irish maternal death rates in comparison with countries who allow more easily abortion? They are very good! Ireland is amongst the safest countries to have a baby and survive it! Why would you than change a law because of one rare case with a multi-resistant bacteria, where it is very doubtful the mother would have survived it anyway! I hope Irish legislators won’t let this case to be the motor of a law-change. I hope they look further and see medicin in their country is safe and good and this case is politically and ideologically misused by foreign pressure groups to get Ireland on her knees to accept free abortion.
