4 Wing Sports and Fitness Manager Josey

“phenomenal.”
“While local runners enjoyed a nice cool run in
the rain at the 4 Wing Community Run, these three
athletes streaked through the heat in Ottawa,” she
said. “And it has come to my attention that Capt
Setlack’s wife Emily won the Women’s 2016 halfmarathon in Calgary that weekend as well.
“All these athletes really did put Cold Lake on

Q
HOME INSPECTION
How far from our house should the
downspout extensions be?
A
Good rule of thumb is 4 - 6 ft. Though this may
not be sufficient to keep that roof run-off water
away from your home. Consider the existing slope,
area being discharged to and soil drainage. The
downspout water should be directed away from your
dwelling, discharged so that it can flow to the curb
gutter / drainage swale or readily evaporate.

PETS
It’s a warm summer day and at the grocery store you notice
a car with a poodle panting inside. What should you do?
Run into the grocery store and page the dog’s owner. The panting
poodle may be minutes from death - a victim of heatstroke. You need
to get the poodle out of the car and reduce its body temperature. Leaving
a pet inside a closed automobile for just 15 to 20 minutes is risky on a 80
degree day. Temperatures rise quickly and even 10 minutes inside a hot car
is enough to cause exhaustive heatstroke. Even leaving the windows open
“just a crack” isn’t enough. Heatstroke can be easily prevented if you follow
one Petland Rule: Leave your pet at home when running errands in the
summer months. If this is not possible take the following precautions: run
errands during cooler times of day; leave car windows down protected with
pet-secure window screens; carry fresh cool water and a bowl to provide your
pet a drink; check on your pet’s health every few minutes. For information on

Rare Orchid Blooms in 4 Wing Bush
Jeff Gaye
Some people look at
a stand of bushes and see,
well, bushes.
Adam Dul, a shop
supervisor at 4 Wing’s
waste water treatment
facility, looks at those
same bushes and sees
dozens of species of
trees, undergrowth and
ground cover forming a
complex, interdependent
ecosystem.
While
walking
through a stand of
bushes on the base last
week, Dul happened
upon a hidden treasure
– a rare striped coralroot
orchid (also known as
a hooded coralroot, or
Corallorhiza striata). In
fact, there were a few
of the orchids growing
amid the decaying leaf
litter.
“Every spring when
plants start flowering,
I like to walk through
the woods and look for
interesting plants,” said
Dul, who has a Masters
degree
in
wetlands
ecology.
“Whenever I find
something I haven’t seen,
I try to identify it,” he
said.
The
coralroot
orchid grows from BC
to Nova Scotia, he says,
but while its range is
widespread the plants are
not abundant. Lacking
green leaves, they do
not produce chlorophyll
so they are not able to
photosynthesize
their
own nutrients. Instead
they must rely on a
forest-dwelling
fungus
to break down organic
material into useable
carbohydrates.
The
coralroot
orchid’s rhizomes (root
systems) form clumps
resembling coral, giving
it its name.
Dul says there are
about 30 species of orchid
growing wild in Alberta.
Several of them form
parasitic
relationships
with fungi to feed
themselves.
Not far from the
orchids,
Dul
also

Watch your step! The tiny star flower is easy to miss

Pet of the Week
discovered a population
of star flower, Trientalis
borealis, which he says is
also uncommon.
“It’s not very common,
but it’s not as rare as the
orchid,” he said. “In some
US states, it’s a protected
species.”
While Dul likes to

plants with others, he

Coffee: A Love-Hate Relationship
DereK Coe,
heaLTh ProMoTIoN
MaNaGer
There
must
be
something about coffee I
haven’t caught on to.
Every day I pass by
the local coffee shop
I’m amazed at how
many people line up for
their daily pick-me-up.
Maybe it’s the taste? Or
maybe it’s the caffeine, a
psychoactive drug that
falls under the category
of a stimulant.
It’s quite likely it’s a
combination of the two.
But what most people
don’t realize is that since
the caffeine in coffee is
a drug (the most widely
used drug in the world),
you can actually become
addicted to it. Before you
know it, coffee goes from
a want to a need. They
have even started making
coffee mugs that say
things like “It’s in your
best interest not to talk
to me until I’ve had my
morning coffee.”
I’m not trying to
Creative Connection
tell you that coffee is
bad for you, because
it’s not – as long as you
drink it in moderation.
But this is where we run
into a problem: what is
moderation?
Moderation is staying
within your recommended
daily intake levels. Health
Canada recommends a
daily intake of less than
400 mg of caffeine, or up
to four cups of coffee for
healthy adults. When I
say cups I mean 250 mL
cups, not four extra-large
coffees at 700 m each.
Unfortunately, most
coffee drinkers exceed
the recommended daily
intake, which puts them at
risk of developing health
problems. This could
be anxiety, jitters, sleep
difficulties,
irritability,
reduced concentration,
or things like diarrhea,
increased
blood
pressure,
dehydration,
bone calcium loss, and
irregular
or
rapid
heartbeats. Makes me
glad I don’t like coffee!
If you like coffee,
pay attention to how
much you’re drinking.
This
is
particularly
important because we
often overlook other
food products, like pop
and chocolate, that also
contain caffeine. While
the amount may be small,
