«J’ai toujours rêvé d’être un réalisateur européen» : Woody Allen a des songes d’une rare acuité ! A
l’image de Quentin Tarantino, Wim Wenders ou encore Costa-Gavras qui témoignent, eux aussi, de leur
amour pour le cinéma européen. Ce cinéma, nous aimons sa richesse, sa diversité ; nous défendons sa
créativité. Avec générosité d’ailleurs, puisque cette 12e édition invite à arpenter plus de 25 pays d’Europe, au grès de 100 courts et long métrages, sélectionnés parmi quelque 1040 films pour leur intérêt
artistique, leur singularité et leur regard sur le monde.
Brussels Film Festival, c’est aussi du suspense (la compétition), des découvertes (le panorama), des
incontournables (les avant-premières), des films sous les étoiles (les séances en plein air gratuites), et
des Music Docs.
Le BRFF, c’est aussi et surtout, des rencontres avec Sir Alan Parker (notre invité d’honneur), Raphael,
Olivier Rabourdin, Anita Kravos, Fabrizio Rongione, Hande Kodja, Laia Marull, Alexandre Courtès (les
membres de notre jury), Tony Gatlif, Samuel Benchetrit, Anna Mouglalis, Céline Sallette, Pascale Ferran
(nos invités), Pierre Salvadori et Pascal Bonitzer (nos rencontres professionnelles).
Sans oublier : Benoit Poelvoorde, Jan Decleir, Olivier Gourmet, Wim Willaert, Bouli Lanners, Koen de
Bouw, Jonathan Zaccaï… que notre compatriote Rudy Lamboray a immortalisé en photos très grand
format 1m x 1m50, pour l’expo Les 50 Salopards !

«I always wanted to be a European director»: Woody Allen heeft dromen die getuigen van een zeldzame scherpzinnigheid. Net als Quentin Tarantino, Wim Wenders of Costa-Gravas die ook al hun
liefde voor de Europese cinema bezongen. Wij houden van de rijkdom en diversiteit ervan en wij
verdedigen haar creativiteit. Op genereuze wijze, want voor deze 12de editie verwelkomen wij maar
liefst een honderdtal kort- en langspeelfilms uit meer dan 25 Europese landen, geselecteerd uit 1040
films op hun artistieke waarde, hun eigenheid en hun kijk op de wereld. Het Brussels Film Festival, dat
is ook spanning (de Competitie), ontdekking (de Panorama-sectie), de ‘must-sees’ (avant-premières),
films onder de sterren (de gratis openluchtvertoningen) en de Music Docs. Het BRFF, dat zijn ook en
vooral, de ontmoetingen met Sir Alan Parker (onze eregast), Raphael, Olivier Rabourdin, Anita Kravos,
Fabrizio Rongione, Hande Kodja, Laia Marull, Alexandre Courtès (de leden van onze jury), Tony Gatlif,

«I always wanted to be a European director»: Woody Allen’s wish couldn’t be more opportune. As Quentin Tarantino, Wim Wenders or Costa-Gavras, he also shows his love for European cinema. What we love
about this cinema is its richness, its diversity; we stand up for its creativity. As you can see, we defend it
with great generosity as this 12th annual Brussels Film Festival invites you to travel around 25 European
countries and to discover 100 short- and feature films selected amongst 1040 films for their artistic
interest, their singularity and their view of the world.
The Brussels Film Festival is also about suspense (the competition), discoveries (the panorama), mustsees (the premières), cinema under the stars (free outdoor screenings), and musical documentaries.

ALEXANDRE COURTES
Jamiroquai, Franz Ferdinand, U2, The White Stripes ne jurent que
par lui : Alexandre Courtès, le roi français des clips. L’univers de la
French Touch (Cassius, Phoenix, Air), c’est encore lui. Les célèbres
casques de Daft Punk ? C’est toujours lui. The incident, une série B
hyper énervée en hommage à Carpenter ? Du Courtès pur jus ! Du
clip au long, l’homme a pris le temps de réaliser entre autres un des
segments du film à sketches Les Infidèles.
He dropped out of high school and didn’t finish his art studies either,
but that did not prevent him from making it big in the industry. He
produced music videos for super bands: Air, The White Stripes, U2,
Cassius... He directed the film The Incident and a fragment of Les
Infidèles with Jean Dujardin.
HANDE KODJA
Elle aurait pu devenir violoniste ou pianiste, mais notre compatriote
Hande Kodja a préféré monter à Paris pour suivre le Cours Florent
et le Conservatoire. Tant mieux pour le cinéma qui est tombé sous
le charme de sa blondeur romantique. Comment oublier son interprétation touchante dans Marieke Marieke de Sophie Schoukens, ou
cette Rosenn éthérée et sauvageonne à la fois.
She could have become a violinist or a pianist but our compatriot
Hande Kodja wanted something else such as going to Paris to join
the Cours Florent and the Conservatory. What a good news for
the cinema that fell in love with our romantic blond. How could we
ever forget her moving interpretation in Marieke Marieke by Sophie
Schoukens, or Rosenn ?
ANITA KRAVOS
En 2007, Anita Kravos tient son premier grand rôle au
cinéma avec Come l’ombra de Marina Spada. Sa composition lui vaut plusieurs prix d’interprétation. En 2010, elle est
nominée pour un David Di Donatelo comme meilleure actrice. En
2013, elle prend la pose sur les marches de Cannes pour La Grande Bellezza, de Paolo Sorrentino. Non, rien n’arrête une femme qui
monte, qui monte, qui monte…
Anita Kravos is the Italian actress who plays the performance artist
in the Oscar®-winner film The Great Beauty by Paolo Sorrentino. She
was nominated in 2010 for a David di Donatello award in the Best
Supporting Actress category for the challenging role of a transgender character in “Raise your Head”. In 2013, she is Charlotte, a part
of the international cast in the comedy Italian Movies.
LAIA MARULL
L’actrice catalane Laia Marull sait choisir ses films et séduire les cinéphiles, c’est le moins qu’on puisse dire. Primée pour sa performance
dans Fugitivas de Miguel Hermoso (Goya de la meilleure révélation),
dans Te doy mis ojos /Ne dis rien de Iciar Bollain (Goya de la meilleure actrice), et dans Pa Negre /Pain noir d’Agusti Villaronga (Goya du
meilleur second rôle), Laia rejoindra tout naturellement notre jury.
The catalan actress Laia Marull knows how to choose her films and
seduce film-lovers, that is the least we can say!

OLIVIER RABOURDIN
Visage familier du petit et du grand écran, Olivier Rabourdin se glisse
dans tous les univers, dans celui d’Arnaud Desplechin (Rois et Reine)
comme dans celui d’Olivier Marchal (la série Braquo, Les Lyonnais).
Le public l’aime, il va bientôt l’aduler pour deux prestations inoubliables : Des hommes et des dieux de Xavier Beauvois qui lui vaut
d’être nommé au César du Meilleur second rôle, et Eastern Boys,
film socio-poétique de Robin Campillo. Malgré une chaude actualité
(Grace de Monaco de Olivier Dahan, La Rançon de la gloire de Xavier
Beauvois), Olivier a accepté notre invitation - qu’il en soit chaleureusement remercié.
Olivier Rabourdin is an actor and writer, known for Taken (2008),
Des hommes et des dieux (2010) and Minuit à Paris (2011). He appeared in more than seventy films since 1985. He played the main
character in Paradis perdu by Eve Deboise presented last year in the
Brussels Film Festival.

FABRIZIO RONGIONE
On a souvent lu : « Fabrizio, c’est un enfant des Dardenne ». Oui,
mais lequel? Boutade à part, Fabrizio Rongione est bel et bien l’un
des acteurs fétiches des frères, au point d’être à l’affiche de Rosetta,
de L’enfant, du Silence de Lorna, du Gamin au vélo, et de Deux jours,
une nuit. Acteur, comédien, scénariste, humoriste, showman et maître de cérémonie des Magritte, Fabrizio Rongione a quand même
trouvé le temps d’être parmi nous.
We’ve often heard: « Fabrizio, he’s the Dardenne Brothers’ protégé,
their child ». Yes, but which one? The actual one or the one from the
eponymous film? Inside joke… Fabrizio Rongione is truly one of the
Brother’s favourite actors, as he stars in Rosetta, The Child, Lorna’s
Silence, The Kid with a Bike, and in Two Days, One Night. Actor,
comic, scriptwriter, humorist, showman and host of the Magrittes
Ceremony, found time to be amongst us.

Abandonnée par son compagnon, Neneta décide de retourner dans sa Galice
natale. Du boulot, elle va en trouver, comme manœuvre dans un chantier de
construction. Mais il lui faudra se battre pour trouver sa place...
Le réalisateur galicien Alfonso Zarauza dresse un magnifique portrait de mère
célibataire héroïque, dans un contexte de crise aigüe. Ici, comme chez Ken Loach,
la trame narrative éminemment sociopolitique conscientise, bouleverse et émeut,
car l’héroïne - bouleversante Lola Duenas (Alleluia, Les Amants passagers, Volver)
- ne rend jamais les armes. Une ode au combat, ardente et chaleureuse.
Nenete wordt wakker in haar caravan aan de Spaanse kust en merkt dat haar
partner Lobo er van door is. Ze keert samen met haar zoontje terug naar haar
geboortedorp in Galicië, waar ze werk vindt als bouwvakster…Een grauw, eerlijk
drama over een heldhaftige alleenstaande moeder die worstelt om haar leven weer
bij elkaar te krijgen, tegen de achtergrond van de economische crisis in Spanje.
Regisseur Alfonso Zarauza verzamelde een excellente cast met o.a. Lola Dueñas
(Mar adentro, Volver, Hable con ella) die haar harde, maar tegelijk kwetsbare
personage uitmuntend vertolkt.
Neneta lives without responsibilities or plans in a motor home on the coast of
Spain. When her partner, ‘Wolf’, disappears without explanation she decides to go
back to her hometown in Galicia. All are difficulties, coming back to her mother,
finding a job. Until she gets an offer to be a construction worker. With courage and
sense of humor she overcomes the hard work and being a woman in a man world.
She grows stronger and independent as her group is beginning to be known as
‘The Aces’ for their ability to be the fastest workers around. She starts dating an
old friend, get along with her mother and stabilize her life.

Deux quadras ensemble depuis longtemps. Trop longtemps ? Pomme et Pierre sont
pris dans cette combine qu’est devenu leur couple, ce discret désastre, pris dans
ce numéro qui se joue presque malgré eux. Arrête ou je continue : l’un comme
l’autre pourrait le dire. Ping pong verbal, répliques comico-existentielles, humour
salvateur, confrontation ludique, règlement de compte éloquent, comédiens
formidables (Emmanuelle Devos, Mathieu Amalric) : la réalisatrice française Sophie
Fillières séduit avec un portrait de couple délicieusement audacieux.
Pomme en Pierre zijn reeds lang samen en de hartstocht van weleer heeft plaats
gemaakt voor sleur en wederzijdse irritatie. Tijdens een wandeltocht beslist
Pomme om alleen achter te blijven in het bos...Een cerebraal steekspel en verbale
ping-pong tussen Emmanuelle Devos en Mathieu Amalric, in 2010 nog te gast
op het festival. De Franse regisseuse Sophie Fillières verleidt met deze snedige,
spontane komedie over veertigers op zoek naar een nieuwe zin in hun leven.
Pomme and Pierre have been together for a long time. The time has come: where is
their love gone? Conjugality has taken over. They cannot stand being just the two
of them anymore, and especially those two… At one point, during a hike, Pomme
will have no other alternative at one point to stay and live in the forest…
A film from the talented Sophie Fillières starring Emmanuelle Devos and Mathieu
Amalric (who attended the festival back in 2010). They are such well-loved faces of
French cinema that their very presence in a film functions as a reassuring stamp
of quality.

Jota et Simon, deux jeunes voyous de 16 ans, sont à cran. Le premier, célibataire,
rêve d’un nid d’amour douillet; le second, en couple, est épris de liberté. Et l’un
comme l’autre vivent comme s’ils n’avaient rien à perdre.
Le réalisateur espagnol Gabriel Velázquez excelle dans cet hommage au cinéma
‘quinqui’, qui connut ses heures de gloire en Espagne, fin des seventies, dès
la disparition de la censure franquiste. Au cœur du genre ‘quinqui’ : les jeunes
marginaux de banlieue et les mécanismes sociaux et familiaux qui conduisent à la
délinquance. Une édifiante analyse.
Een groep werkloze adolescenten tracht te overleven in economisch moeilijke
tijden door het stelen van varkens en paarden. Meer dan naar geld, zijn ze in
de rurale omgeving van Salamanca op zoek naar een toekomst. Simón, 16 jaar,
maar reeds vader wil zijn vrijheid terug ,terwijl Jota juist een gezin wil stichten met
zijn drugsverslaafde vriendin...Ärtico is het laatse deel van Velazquez’ trilogie over
familie en kreeg een speciale vermelding van de Generatie 14+ - jury op het Filmfestival van Berlijn. Zuinig met woorden, maar des te guller met sublieme beelden
is deze film een visuele parel.
A group of young ‘quinquis’ (nomadic Spaniards) try to survive in difficult economic times. More than money, what they search for in the streets is a future. Simon,
16-years-old and already a father, wishes to find back his freedom. On the opposite
side, Jota, whose girlfriend is a drug-addict, wants to build a family. Is it loneliness
or family that will make a future for this drifting generation?
Gabriel Velázquez signs up the last part of his trilogy on family, which has already
received a special mention from the Generation Jury in Berlin. The film is a visual
orchestra, which advocates the importance of images over dialogue.

Affair.
Connaissez-vous la ville la plus septentrionale de Suède ? C’est Kiruna. Ici
vivent quatre jeunes, des jeunes du bout du monde qui ont des rêves d’avenir, comme tous les kids du monde. Sauf que sous les pieds des
mômes de Kiruna, bat le cœur d’une mine qui pourrait tout détruire… Avec
Broken Hill Blues, la Suédoise Sofia Norlin a remporté un prix au Festival de
Stockholm, ainsi que le Guldbagge (l’Oscar suédois) de la meilleure photographie,
avant de nous séduire. Son regard sur l’interaction de l’homme avec son environnement étant, il est vrai, d’une rare acuité. Et quand on sait qu’il s’agit d’un premier
film… Eh oui, réalisatrice à suivre !
Boven de Noordpoolcirkel ligt Kiruna, een kleine gemeenschap ontstaan rond een
ijzermijn. Een mijn die het economisch hart vormt, maar terzelfdertijd slachtoffers
eist en het voortbestaan van het stadje letterlijk ondermijnt. Jongeren op de rand
van de volwassenheid vechten met zichzelf en de wereld rondom hen, terwijl de
grond onder hun voeten davert. Een indrukwekkend, minimalistisch debuut
waarin het spectaculair gefotografeerde landschap een welgekomen antidotum
biedt voor de angstige, zwijgzame personages die erin ronddwalen.
North of the Arctic Circle. On the ancestral lands of the indigenous Sami
people, in Kiruna, a small community was built around an iron mine - a mine
which is the beating heart and main economic activity, feeding but also gradually
destroying the ground. Here, a group of youngsters are about to take the leap into
adulthood while the ground literally trembles under their feet. From the winter cold
to the summer greenery, they will fight with themselves and the world around them,
learning to live, love and dream - while the tribe is also in a time of change, forced
to move elsewhere due to the mining explosions in the ground.

L’homme sur la lune : un grand pas pour l’humanité ? Alors que tout le monde
espère une nouvelle ère, une famille perd pied... Le père fonce froc baissé dans la
révolution sexuelle, la mère, réfractaire aux changements, boit la tasse, et le fils, 12
ans, s’éveille doucement à la sexualité en matant la voisine. Les années ‘70, c’était
vraiment fun ? Le réalisateur et artiste hollandais Dick Tuinder livre une réflexion
pertinente sur les illusions perdues et le libéralisme sexuel, à travers une copie à
l’esthétique résolument vintage. Papiers peints, mobilier, fringues : chapeau à la

The film is set in the early ’70s, in Amsterdam, at the time of the space conquest.

new. Farewell To The Moon deals with subject matter that is both comic and tragic: the break-up of a family. Dutch artist and filmmaker Dick Tuinder remembers
vividly NASA’s final mission to the moon in the summer of 1972. He was a kid

organisée. Chez ces gens-là, certes modestes mais bien éduqués, les portes
des chambres se verrouillent à double tour… Qualifier un film de coup de poing
semble aujourd’hui banal. Pas cette fois cependant, où le réalisateur grec Alexandros
Avranas (remarqué pour Without) dénonce une société malade, à travers une famille
insensible à l’horreur domestique, la violence morale et physique. Lion d’argent du
meilleur réalisateur à la Mostra de Venise.

Something Must Break tells the love-story between two young men, one of

Après le suicide d’une étudiante, des élèves se liguent contre un professeur (Igor
Samobor) aux méthodes strictes, et l’accusent d’être responsable de la mort de
leur camarade. Rien n’est pourtant tout noir, ni tout blanc… Prix de la critique à la
Mostra de Venise et représentant de la Slovénie aux Oscars 2014, Class Enemy
est inspiré d’événements dont le réalisateur Rok Bicek a été le témoin au lycée.
Le film, à l’esthétique épurée, met en garde contre les problèmes de communication à l’école où, souvent, le seul moyen d’apaiser des frustrations est la rébellion.

The academic year is nearly over for a tightly knit bunch of high-school seniors.
But the atmosphere in the classroom changes when their teacher, Nusa, goes on
maternity leave and her job is filled by the German authoritarian Robert.
While Nusa was keyed in the students’ lives and personalities, Robert displays not
such sensitivity. Thus he ignores the feelings of the grieving Luka, whose mother
recently died, and of shy pianist Sabina who is hypersensitive to criticism. When
Robert delivers some scathing rmarks to Sabina and that she hangs herself shortly

Quatre vieux potes décident - 40 ans plus tard - de reformer leur groupe de rock qui

du rock (Stones, Beatles, Kinks) bien senties, un savant cocktail d’émotions, un

Geisberg): autant de bonnes raisons pour aller voir cette comédie tchèque, Prix du

Founded in the early 40s, the network around the magazine ‘The Circle’ was the
only gay organisation to survive the Nazi regime. Legendary masquerade balls in a
theater in Zurich provided 800 visitors from all over Europe with a secret and safe
space to act out their ‘otherness’ in a self-determined way. It is there that the timid
teacher Ernst Ostertag falls in love with the drag-star Röbi Rapp. Ernst is looking for
a way to fight for his homosexuality to be accepted as a normal behavior outside
the boundaries of ‘The Circle’ network without losing his employment as a teacher.
As for Röbi, he champions the joint fruition of their love.

de la came. Il est pourtant grand temps qu’il prenne sa vie en main, d’autant que
la fille qu’il aime, lorgne du coin de l’œil un voyou… Comment grandir dans un
bled qui n’offre aucune perspective de vie meilleure ? Le réalisateur moldave Igor
Cobileanski pose la question, dans un film existentiel doux-amer. Ici, le héro est un
antihéros, le drame, celui du quotidien, sans fioriture ni faux-semblant.
Viorel, 19 jaar, leeft samen met zijn moeder die niet nalaat hem regelmatig zijn
werkloosheid en gebrek aan ambitie te verwijten. Om de tijd te doden, helpt hij
zijn vriend Goose met het dealen van weed en het bouwen van een gemotoriseerde paraglider. Net als de vele pogingen om het gevaarte in de lucht te houden,
lijken ook zijn schuchtere pogingen om te ontsnappen aan de Moldavische ellende
uit te draaien op een mislukking. De grauw gekleurde fotografie van Oleg Mutu
(4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) past perfect bij deze sombere, onderkoelde karakterstudie waaraan Roemeens topregisseur Corneliu Porumboiu (12:08 East of
Bucharest) meeschreef. Gelukkig heeft Cobileanski zijn bittere pil met zwartgallige, soms absurde humor weten te verzachten.
The Unsaved is a drama about a Sancho Panza and not a Don Quijote. It’s about
the every day’s non-hero facing circumstances and not adventures. Viorel fledgling
drug dealer, from a backwater little town in the contemporary Republic of Moldova.
He gets involved through his best friend, Goose, in small-time drug dealing. But he
reckons the moment has come for him to start growing up, find a job and quit the
drug dealing but not before stealing a car engine to «tune» Goose’s hang glider or
delivering some drugs in his place. Finally, he wants to fall in love. What will happen
to him ?

What is Left? clôt une trilogie sur l’Italie contemporaine. Cette fois encore le ton est
empreint d’une salutaire ironie, pour dénoncer une classe politique dépassée - et
c’est là un léger euphémisme !

The Italian directors Gustav Hofer and Luca Ragazzi tried to define the identity of

is left? is the final part of a trilogy about contemporary Italy. Using their typical

narrow format and the actors who display a fascinating strangeness create an oppressive atmosphere that suits the novel’s complexity while allowing the audience
to read this dark court case. Almaric’s deep and disturbing exploration of a man
facing his intricate relationships with women is the ultimate treat.

loufoque imaginée par Guillaume Nicloux (La Religieuse), Michel est bel et bien
kidnappé par trois pieds nickelés ! Dans le rôle-titre du film : Houellebecq lui-même.
En résulte un véritable OVNI, cocasse, sympathique, chaleureux, où Michel sympathise avec ses ravisseurs et où fusent les vannes et aphorismes que l’on aurait aimé
écrire. Houellebecq/Nicloux ou l’art d’asséner une sacrée leçon de vie !

En 1989, Slint, un groupe quasi inconnu à l’époque, sort un disque, “Spiderland”. Toute une
génération d’amateurs de musiques indépendantes, sombres, lo-fi, post–punk semble s’y
retrouver. En 2014, le groupe – qui s’est séparé depuis – est culte, n’a pas sorti d’autre disque, et l’album, un chef-d’œuvre qui résonne aujourd’hui encore. Le film retrace l’histoire du
groupe et surtout de l’album, mais aussi de Louisville, avec sa scène musicale particulière.
In 1989 komt Spiderland uit, een plaat van de toen nog onbekende band Slint. Iedereen
had het erover. Een klassieker voor een hele generatie muziekliefhebbers, die donkere en
sfeervolle muziek, DIY, lo-fi en post-punk nauw aan het hart dragen. De band maakte nooit
een tweede plaat. In 2014 heeft de groep een cultstatus verworven en de plaat is nog steeds
actueel. De film tekent het verhaal van de band, van de plaat, en van de rijke muziekscene
in Louisville.

prévoir…
Zivan houdt van punk. Hij woont in een klein afgelegen dorpje in Serbië, omringd door
varkens en kippen. Hij probeert de zesde editie van zijn festival op te zetten - hij doet het
alleen, en is niet altijd even goed voorbereid. En deze keer wilt hij de internationale toer op:
hij nodigt een Slovaakse band uit... En misschien dat hij dit jaar dan geen geld zal verliezen.
Een eerste film, een portret van een utopist, vol met passie maar niet altijd even goed georganiseerd.
Zivan is a punk rocker and a poet who comes from a very poor peasant family. Every summer, for the last five years, he organized a punk festival in his native village in Serbia. And,
he always lost money on it. However, his passion is in offering a different cultural model to
the people in his environment and his dreams are focused on changing the way those people think. Earning some money while doing that is also one of his biggest goals. This is the
sixth time he makes a music festival, and Zivan decides to make it an international one - he’s
bringing a band from Slovakia.
