Chapter EDITO 7 Once again, we meet in Sintra - which over time has become the meeting place for all those who share the same commitment and the same passion for the documentary genre. This year, we meet at a time when the audiovisual landscape is becoming more and more complex. The documentary is alive everywhere in Europe, but situations differ greatly. Germany, France, Belgium and Scandinavian countries as a whole, dominate the market, the United Kingdom has lost its position as a leader and Southern European countries are clearly emerging after a long period of silence. Global phenomena remain the same. Documentaries are mainly financed by public broadcasters and by the different funding support systems in the different countries. The market is still dominated by “domestic” productions. Smaller countries with minority languages find it difficult to export, however, because of their subtitling tradition they are able to import a wide variety of films, and the bigger countries with a “dubbing” tradition tend to be more inward-looking, with Britain and the United States, for example, hardly importing any films that aren’t shot in English. In such a context, ARTE still plays a key role in structuring the sector, not through its share of audience ratings, but through its impact, its constant commitment to the genre and the influence of its creative work on the sector as a whole, with the complicity, of course, of a few major public service channels. It is important to remember that for fifteen years now, ARTE, Channel 4 more so in the beginning, the German and Belgian public broadcasters, as well as Danish and Dutch broadcasters have all literally re-launched what we will call here, for the sake of simplicity, the “creative documentary”: cinema generated by filmmakers and produced by independent production companies. Thanks to the consistent faith shown in creative filmmakers, the documentary has regained considerable ground in programme schedules, as well as, although to a lesser degree, in cinemas. Documentaries have even benefited from exceptional circulation between European countries in comparison with other television productions. This spectacular success (in France, for example, more than 1,500 hours of documentaries were produced in 2000) has raised other issues. Broadcasters are thinking in terms of developing greater loyalty among their viewers which is inciting them to adopt policies turned towards simply reproducing films for their national audiences. This has led to programmes which are more and more formatted and generally speaking, to more and more productions with a national or parochial outlook, rather than an investment in creativity. In due course, this will be detrimental to the genre. To conclude, major trends in the media industry are threatening the “creative documentary”. On one hand, the genre runs the risk of becoming excessively formatted or rigid - which could lead to its own demise - and on the other hand, documentary filmmakers face ever-increasing pressure to simplify, to produce magazine, “reportage” style work more easily accessible to the general public. However, documentary filmmakers, producers and their few remaining allies are often highly competent, totally devoted to the form - and expend such phenomenal energy - that the situation is far from dramatic. The association of these qualities through effective networking offers such potential, in terms of choice, that the genre does not seem at risk of becoming marginalized. The existence of Eurodoc is based on the desire to remain solidly attached to the economy of European documentary film whilst avoiding being sucked into a subsidised economy. This is possible through the development of a network of highly competent filmmakers who have the ability to adapt quickly, enabling them to cope with new situations and to work together in Europe, and in so doing ensuring that films and ideas circulate. Prokop Voskovec still lives in Paris, whereas Jan Vladislav returned to Prague in 2003. Both men undertook the task of writing their “memoirs”. Through their writings, they revisit what used to be their lives. They see each other regularly in Prague. Their words, memories and impressions sometimes blend into each other and sometimes complete one another. Their subjective and uncommon vision of the dissidence and of clandestine pamphlet and magazine editing plunges us into a reality, which is both terrible and absurd, but which was the reality of the daily lives of people in a totalitarian regime. We see this world, first from the inside and then from outside. A number of archival images illustrate their accounts. These pictures come together with scenes from the past that we will re-film, poetically, as in a dream, to make for fugacious visions, unrealistic, as if resurgent from memory. AD VITAM PRODUCTION J UDITH NORA AN AMERICAN JOURNEY DIRECTOR : PHILIPPE SÉCLIER In contemporary art, everybody agrees there is a “before” and an “after” The Americans, Robert Frank’s 1958 photographic manifesto. Half a century later, French director Philippe Séclier decided to follow Robert Frank’s footsteps to explore the spirit of the « Beat Generation », and the impact of his book, The Americans, not only on the art of photography, but also on American culture. From Texas to Montana, from Nebraska to Louisiana, from New York to San Francisco, an American journey is a 15,000 miles-odyssey through contemporary America, moving between past and present, photography and cinema, and two Americas, separated by time. 1958-2008. 1958-2008. BIOFILMOGRAPHY Philippe Séclier, 49, is a former magazine journalist and editor. Freelance since 2000, he has edited two photographics books Hôtel Puerto and La Longue Route de Sable (Pier Paolo Pasolini). Since 1999 he has made researched on Chilean photographer Sergio Larrain, for an upcoming book and exhibition. In 2003, using archive images, he made a 52-minutes documentary about Marc Riboud called Instants d’annee (2004). In 2006 he has collaborated with Magnum on Magnum, 60 ans a book. Since Spring 2007 Philippe has been working with photographer and filmmaker Raymond Depardon on a variety of book, film and exhibition projects. Cycle 2008 ALTER EGO PRODUCTION Chapter PARTICIPANTS 13 CÉCILE LESTRADE THE VIRGIN MARY, THE COPTS AND ME DIRECTOR : NAMIR ABDEL MESSEEH While watching a videotape supposed to show the recording of a miraculous apparition of the Virgin in Egypt, the director realizes that his mother, an Egyptian Christian, can see the Virgin and that he can’t. An atheist himself but wishing to perceive something of this miraculous Egypt that was omnipresent throughout his childhood, he decides to go and question the Copts about the apparitions. Alternating between the subjective quest of the director and an investigation about the Egypt of the apparitions- through some accounts, archives pictures and films extracts- the film immerses us into this country of myth and history whose religion can’t be dissociated from its identity. BIOFILMOGRAPHY Namir Abdel Messeeh was born in 1974 from an egyptian and french nationality. After studying at the Institute for Advanced Cinematographic Studies (La Femis), he directed short fiction films. In 2005, “Toi, Waguih” is his first documentary film about his father being a communist in Egypt, film which has been shown at a number of international festivals. AMIP OLIVIER GALLAIS NO FASTER THAN LIFE.... OR THE STORY OF AN ACCIDENTAL PRINCESS DIRECTOR : ALTINAÏ PETROVITCH NJEGOSH A young girl, born and raised in Paris learns one day at the age of twelve that she is the descendent of the royal family of Montenegro, a small country in the heart of the Balkans. She goes on to discover a people and a culture and finds herself torn between two opposing worlds. Eighteen years later, this same girl has become a filmmaker and decides to undertake a journey to her homeland on the trail of her ancestors in an attempt to unravel the mystery of her identity. For this “accidental princess”, this eventful trip into the surprising and disturbing depths of the Black Mountain is not only a chance to meet the Montenegrin people, but also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to discover the story of a country, her family and her life. Cycle 2008 B ILDERSTURM FILMPRODUKTION Chapter PARTICIPANTS 15 MONIKA MACK BEYOND BLACK AND WHITE - HELEN ZILLE MAYOR OF CAPE TOWN DIRECTOR : BIRGIT SCHULZ She is white, of German descent, with Jewish forebears and raised a Christian –now she is Mayor of Cape Town. Helen Zille has always fought against apartheid; now she is fighting against all types of racism, injustice and corruption in the young South African democracy – and hence, also against certain representatives of the ANC. She must win the confidence of the black population and keep in check those white citizens who would prefer to reintroduce apartheid… A film about a remarkable personality and her role in a complex yet fascinating city – on the eve of the presidential elections in South Africa and of the first football World Cup on African soil. BIOFILMOGRAPHY After completing her studies in German Language and Literature, Biology and Philosophy at the University of Bonn (state examinations in 1986) she worked as an editorial journalist at Stadtrevue, one of the largest magazines in Cologne, and subsequently for the ballet magazine “Ballett International”. From 1999 to 2000, she was a commissioning editor in the “Women’s TV” department of WDR. In 1993 she set up the film production company Bildersturm. She has written and produced many documentaries for WDR and ARTE. She also participated in the EAVE programme in 2006. Her award-winning films include: A Right to Live – Aids Medication for Millions, ARTE/WDR 2006, 45’ Presence of Mind - the Psychoanalyst Margarete Mitscherlich, ARTE/WDR 2005, 45’ Liebesversuche / Attempts at Love – A Portrait of Werner Schroeter, WDR/ARTE 70’ C.R.I.M. ISABEL MACHADO EDEN’S ARK DIRECTOR : MARCELO FELIX Eden’s Ark inscribes the witnessing of film in that area of temporal suspension between a past to keep and an uncertain future; and turns our attention towards the exile of reserves and collections in which botany and film share the statu quo of endangered species. The insight of the similarities between botany and film protection encourages a deep and fascinating reflection about memory and preservation both of nature and images. L'Arche d'Eden place le témoignage du film dans cette zone de suspension temporelle entre un passé à garder et un futur incertain. Il attire notre attention vers l'exil des réserves et des collections où la botanique et le cinéma partagent le statu quo des espèces en danger. La perception des similitudes entre la protection de la botanique et la protection du cinéma encourage une réflexion profonde et fascinante sur la nature et les images. In 1914 the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife sets off a chain reaction of war declarations that leads to First World War. The film sets up comparisons between both events and leads us in a journey through history until the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict, showing how a war can lead to another war, often just by accident. JOSHUA’S CITY is a journey through some violent moments in World History. BIOFILMOGRAPHY Daniel Blaufuks was born in Lisbon in 1963 in a family of Jewish German refugees. E NDORFILM J IRI KONECNY GRANDPA’S SECRETS, A LIFE BEHIND THE SCENES DIRECTORS : JAKUB HEIJNA & LUCIE KRALOVA “Darkness is my raw material. Just as the sculptor needs his clay, the carver his wood, I carve my theatre out of darkness…” (Josef Svoboda). I grew up in a house of a man who was a brilliant stage designer, but who also was my grandfather to whom I did not talk much. I was 25 when he died and I realized I did not know almost anything about him. Darkness and emptiness he would often talk about as his materials filled up my head. I decided to explore the darkness and the emptiness through a film: and search for things that outlive us. The basic line of the film deals with Jakub’s searching for his deceased grandfather, a famous stage designer Josef Svoboda. The objective of this searching is to present this extraordinary man as not many people know him. The film will deal with Josef Svoboda’s life and work in a comprehensive and profound way and it will be the only film to show archive materials related to Svoboda’s work and private life that have not been published yet. BIOFILMOGRAPHY Lucie Králová was born in 1978. But when the summer comes to Chukotka, the young lads draw to sea, as whale hunters. For a while, they become Tagikaks. Cycle 2008 KELPIE FILMS Chapter PARTICIPANTS 19 DOUGLAS N EILSON THE TWO LIVES OF THE TOMABOV DIRECTOR : TOMAS LEACH This is the story of the destruction and re-birth of a once great ship, proving that in this era of recycling an object can be more than the sum of its now tired and rusting parts. It is about how to turn an old oil tanker in to a thousand useful things with new lives in new places. Until now the Tomabov was an important cog in the western economy travelling thousands of miles every year with its cargo of black gold, now it is time for that life to end and for a new one to begin. This film will follow the trail of the Tomabov as it is torn apart on the ship breaking beaches of Bangladesh and becomes a thousand new things in a thousand new homes. KINÉ ALESSANDRO CARROLI A JOURNEY WITH FELLINI - ON THE TRAIL OF AN UNREALIZED MASTERPIECE DIRECTOR : LUCA MAGI There is a film Fellini wrote before La Dolce Vita, which very few people know about, also because he never made it : A Journey with Anita. The biographically inspired film tells the journey of a writer, travelling by Cadillac, from Rome to the Adriatic Sea in order to reach his father’s deathbed. It is the most intimate story by Fellini, a return to the origins narrated in the form of a road-movie, an initiation accomplished through confrontation with the landscapes and the traditions of central Italy. A young director, enchanted by this wonderful story, decides - fifty years on – to retake that journey. In a Cadillac, guided by Fellini’s text, he will go deep into the countryside of Lazio and Tuscany trying to solve the mysterious charms of this unrealized masterpiece. From Montenegro to Mar de la Plata, the plot will bring us to the discovery - in the early years of the Cold War - of a vast international conspiracy led by Anglo-American Services and the Black International to control Mediterranean and South American countries. A hitherto untold spy story, a documentary on secrets that involved Churchill and Peron, J. J. Angleton and Licio Gelli, Tito and Truman, as well as a raft of war criminals, secret agents, partisans, bankers, mystics and plotters... LES PRODUCTIONS DU LAGON LENGTH : 60 & 90 MIN LENGTH : 52 & 90 MIN VALÉRIE DUPIN LIFE OR DEBT IN CONGO KINSHASA DIRECTOR : JEAN-PIERRE CARLON Thirty-two years of dictatorship and two wars later, the Democratic Republic of Congo is still paying back its debt from its colonial past. With “Life or debt in Congo Kinshasa” we are plunged into the daily struggle of peasant farmer, Victor, a former university lecturer, who has been fighting for years for the illegitimacy of the debt to be recognised. Indeed, an audit would enable possible corruption and the responsibilities of creditors in this embezzlement to be revealed. Therefore, the Mobutu years are a textbook case. The “white elephants” are only an illustration of this: enormous sums are lent to pharaonic works which will never be profitable and by doing so, the country becomes indebted, presenting a major and structural obstacle in its development. After having followed Victor on the ground in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the film takes on a truly investigative slant, transporting us to the behind-the-scenes of the IMF, the World Bank and the Club of Paris to explain and dissect this harsh mechanism, which seems to condemn the poorest countries to an economic dependency through which the countries of the North subjugate the countries of the South, without giving them any choice in the matter. BIOFILMOGRAPHY Jean-Pierre Carlon has been making documentaries for about 15 years. Following many years at the Foundation of Archives of the Audiovisual History of the Holocaust (founded by Steven Spielberg), Carlon then focused on the history of WWII making three films: “Operation Sultan” on the January 1943 raids in Marseille and the bombing of the Vieux-Port, “Auschwitz, words to describe it” about survivors’ difficulties in talking about the Holocaust. In “Shorn in 44” he deals with an episode of the Liberation that had long remained taboo. He has also been interested in the French colonisation of Algeria and the subsequent decolonisation (“Words of Pieds-Noirs”). Another part of his work is characterised by films of a social and geopolitical nature which analyse the situation of certain developing countries, in particular Sri Lanka (“Ratnapura or the stone mirage”, “Of islands and men…”). MY MAX E DUTAINMENT MARIA TERESA TRINGALI THE TRAIN OF THE GODS DIRECTOR : MASSIMO MY What happens in a city like Rome when a project of urbanization becomes an utmost urgent need to treat traffic, pollution, and to turn archaeology into a living object? How could the severe preservation attitude of archaeologists venture to destroy relics of the glorious past to build the new subway line, passing beneath the historic centre? As construction on the subway begins, many historical finds are discovered in the subsoil, impeding the work’s progress. Archaeologists, architects and citizens agree the city needs to evolve, but how to reconcile Archaeology, Conservation and the Future? A virtual journey underground, in the history of the Eternal City projected toward the future. ODD GIRL OUT PRODUCTIONS SAMANTHA ZARZOSA FAIRIES AT THE MAGIC KINGDOM DIRECTOR : EVA WEBER Disney World in Florida, visited by millions every year, is a synonym for good clean family fun, wholesomeness and the American Way. Yet, every year in June, thousand-upon-thousands of gay and lesbian visitors gather for an alternative ‘family outing’ at Walt’s surreal little kingdom. It’s Gay Day at Disney World! Taking Gay Day at its starting point, ‘Fairies at the Magic Kingdom’ is a humorous look at the changing nature of family values and will examine the accidental and deliberate embrace of gay consumers by America's most calculating purveyor of "family values" entertainment. Intended to draw the portrait of humanity for any possible extraterrestrial intelligence, this message appears to be a concentrate of our school-years nightmares: anatomical charts, views of the Earth, DNA structure schemes... Thirty years later, Franz Josef Holzer intends to draw an alternative picture of NASA message: a cinematographic letter to aliens, that will follow a concrete example of a human being: four-yearsold Zora, from her conception to the first years of her life... BIOFILMOGRAPHY Franz Josef Holzer is the only director-neurologist in activity at the present time. Born in 1967 in Eastern Switzerland, he began making films in the mid-80’s with his friend Peter Merk. He then worked as a cameraman and coproducer. The three films made by the friends were shown in international festivals and broadcasted by Swiss television. Back to the cinema after his medical studies, Franz Josef wrote and directed two fictions: short film Deux (2000) – Pardino d’Oro for the best short at Locarno Film Festival in 2001 – and feature film The Gap (2007), official selection at Montréal World Film Festival. It's a means of experimenting new forms of expression that go beyond rationality, private trips into disturbed consciousness. Far from a vindicatory speech on psychotropics, Arts & Drugs artists, under influence tells the story often tragic of these creators and spectators who thought they have found in their disturbed consciousness a new way to genius. Many found the way to death. TGA ALINE HOUDY THE WOLDEBA, THE LAND OF MONKS DIRECTOR : JEAN-LOUIS SAPORITO The Woldeba is a region in the North-West of Ethiopia that extends over 400km2. About one thousand monks and hermits live in this unaccesible place. “The Woldeba, or the valley of hyenas, is a land exclusively inhabited by monks who are inclined to mortification and have voluntarily retired in this sweltering, unhealthy and dangerous land to live a life of penitence, meditation and prayer.” This is how, in 1770, the Scotsman James Bruce described this region. Today, at the break of the 21st century, the Woldeba still remains largely unknown, even among Ethiopians. The object of the film is simple : to travel all over and bring back the first filmed testimony of this "land of monks". BIOFILMOGRAPHY Jean-Louis Saporito discovered Ethiopia in 1966 and had since visited this country over thirty times. He has produced and directed several documentaries about Ethiopia. In 1967, he joined Antenne 2, first as a cameraman to then become the current affair magazine’s editor-in-chief and director of documentaries. In 1987, he founded the production company ‘Point du Jour’. Over a period of thirteen years, he produced magazines for French television and more than 200 feature documentaries (F2, F3, F5, Canal +, Arte, M6…). In 2001 he founded ‘Contrechamps’, an NGO that provides support for journalistes working in Niger. He has since directed several documentaries about Africa, such as “Nothing is too beautiful for God” (France5-RTBF-CFRT), a film on the Christians of Ethiopia produced by TGA in 2007. Cycle 2008 TITA PRODUCTIONS Chapter PARTICIPANTS 27 FRED PREMEL TARR BELÀ, CINÉASTE ET AU-DELÀ DIRECTOR : JEAN-MARC LAMOURE When the film-fleuve Satantango is released in 1994, the Hungarian Béla Tarr establishes himself as an old master in cinematography. Each new opus is waited as an event : “His films are so much closer to the daily life rhythms, that it appears we witness the birth of a new cinema”, Gus Van Sant. Between two filmings of the director, Jean-Marc Lamoure invites us to Budapest and in the wide hungarian plain, to meet sensitively Béla Tarr and his close collaborators, where fiction and real confront. BIOFILMOGRAPHY Jean-Marc Lamoure lives and works in Marseilles, and sees himself as a “franc-filmeur” (“straightup” film maker). His last movie, “Farenji”, written for a “ciné-concert”, fully investigates his personal search. It is a mix of digital and silver images (super8); it is a whirlwind of sounds, a humanist speech which seeks to exceed borders and nationalist preaching (Farenji tells the story of a journey, an escape, taking us from Marseilles to Addis Ababa, in Ethiopia). With “Tarr Béla, Cinéaste et au-delà”, he takes us right to the heart of the Hungarian cinematographer’s work. BAM (Baikal-Amur Magistral) was Leonid Brezhnev’s plan to build more than 3500 kilometres of railroad in five years in Southern Siberia, as well as 200 new stations and communities. The work was supposed to be done mainly by Komsomol elite youth. We will meet people who moved to Siberia – as young idealistic communists – in the 1970’s to build BAM and who have stayed there until today. The same people who starred – as strong and beautiful communists – dozens of Soviet propaganda films made on the builders of BAM 30 years ago and who still seem to have some of that pioneering spirit left. Or do they? The historical back story will be told with the old Soviet archive films. But in BAM – Railroad to Nowhere stars of those films will tell their stories - and a story of a remote Siberian community – also from today’s perspective Coproducer : Piret Tibbo, AllFilm (Estonia) Partners : YLE2 (Finland) ETV (Estonia) SVT (Sweden) DR (Denmark) LTR (Lithuania) TSR (Switzerland) 30 Chapter FILMS 2008 THE BUG TRAINER IMMORTALITY LENGTH : 53 MIN EURODOC-PRODUCTION 2003-2004 DIRECTORS : LINAS AUGUTIS, DONATAS ULVYDAS, MAREK SKROBECKI PRODUCER : RASA MISKINYTE COMPANY : ERA FILM (LITHUANIA) LENGTH : 48 MIN DIRECTOR : GÉRARD CAILLAT PRODUCER : SOPHIE GERMAIN COMPANY : KALÉO FILMS (FRANCE) Ladislas Starewitch (1882 – 1965), European Disney, a pioneer of puppet animation is one of the most forgotten film geniuses. 2008 Chapter 5 MINUTES FROM MY HOME LENGTH : 52 MIN DIRECTOR : NAHED AWWAD PRODUCER : BERTAND GLOSSET COMPANY : KARAVAN FILM (TURKEY) 31 FILMS LA C HINE EST ENCORE LOIN EURODOCmed Jerusalem airport is laying along the road that links Ramallah to Jerusalem. Under occupation by the Israeli army since 1967, 5 km away from Ramallah and 10 km from Jerusalem, the dusty runway saw growing at its eastern extremity, one of the biggest checkpoints to access west bank. Nevertheless, it didn’t use to be so, and this abandoned place today lived, as many international air terminals of the 50’s-60’s, the pompous life and freedom of traveling. The happy pictures and luminous testimony of the past bitterly contrast with those of the present where the air field access is forbidden, abandoned behind barber wires and soon, behind the Israelis separation wall. A STORY OF LOSS, IDYLLS, ILLUSIONS Georg is part of a series of autobiographical films by Caterina Klusemann, who was born in Italy to a Jewish mother and German father. As a member of the third generation, she deals, in a highly personal way, with the Holocaust and its consequences today. In breaking down the family history, so steeped in silence and taboos, and shedding light on the rituals of memory and processing thereof, she gradually moves closer to her own ambivalent place in a story full of pain, anger, suppression and hope. In “Georg", Caterina Klusemann focuses on her German-born father, who died in Italy in 1981 at the age of just 38. She was just eight years old at the time. In her film, the director tries to confront her lack of memories and win back a part of her own personal history. Who was he? How can his behaviour towards his wife and motherin-law be interpreted? This conflict drives the film forward, connecting the father's biography with the questions and opinions of a member of the third generation. MARIA’S GROTTO EURODOCmed A gripping portrait of women, whose lives were dictated by a moral code, Maria’s Grotto is a painfully true film about the issue of honor killings in Palestine. Khoury explores the issue through the stories of four women: one is wrongly accused of dishonoring her family and then murdered; the second dies after being forced by her brothers to swallow poison; the third survives repeated stabbings inflicted by her brother; and the fourth is a Hip-hop singer who dares speak out about honor killings, and faces death threats. Through these stories, Khoury exposes the magnitude of honor killings in Palestine. In a city where one in two women over 50 has undergone cosmetic surgery, these women do not see why their low income should keep them from the scalpel. In Brazil, physical beauty and youth are all-important and the fact that only the richest can afford cosmetic surgery makes it all more alluring to the poor. These women are waiting for Professor Ivo Pitanguy’s plastic surgery consultation to open. The professor is a world famous high priest of cosmetic surgery. He heads one of the most famous and most expensive plastic surgery clinics in Rio de Janeiro, but he has also vowed to treat the poorest members of society. From March to June, the Professor’s staff, most of whom are volunteers, handle the request of 3,000 women. They come to this unique centre of cosmetic surgery – facelifts, liposuction, silicon implants and so on – at a very low price which just covers the cost of the equipment used during the operation. We attach ourselves to this memory. In the Fifties, my parents left their native village of Esanatoglia, situated in the Marches in Italy to work in Belgium. In the last thirty years, new immigrants from Europe and from the world over have come to work in this resurgent region of Italy, and some have settled in the village. Cairo, Alexandria, Tel Aviv, Beirut, Damascus, Aleppo, Palmyra… In a troubled world, these cities share a common inheritance, that of classical Arab music. Florence leaves Paris for the Middle East to discover an unknown and hidden part of her past – she is of Jewish and Arab descent – carried along by her love of the oriental music that guides her footsteps. A people who don’t want to speak about themselves or be spoken about. They form a closed community with a specific way of life, still based on oral tradition and nomadism. Things become even more complicated when the director falls in love with one of the women of the community. Yves Schmitt’s personal point of view interwoven with that of Bilda, his youngest sister-in-law, invites us on an immersion into this world, sometimes « raw », often tender. In 1963, PAIGC – African Party for the Independence of GuineaBissau and Cape Vert – started a liberation struggle against Portuguese rule. PAIGC’s leader Amílcar Cabral made always clear that they were fighting colonialism, not the Portuguese people. And it was in Guinea-Bissau that was born the Army Movement that lead to the Carnation Revolution in Portugal, in April 74. The conflict brought no hate, but friendship. Why? We tried to find it out, through different characters scattered through Guinea, Cape Vert and Portugal. He decides to take him to court. After a lengthy legal process, the questions asked are: does John Moore have rights over his own cells? Can private companies own a stake in our bodies? Where do we draw the line between the « thing » and the « person »? In 1990, the California Supreme Court decides that, where the University’s patent on Moore’s cells is indeed valid, Moore’s claim to sovereign ownership over his own body is, in fact, groundless. Since then, patents on life have come to number in the thousands and are crucial for the biotechnological industries, and for the advancement of biomedical research in general. A landmark case, the Moore story serves as the starting point for this film which will explore, through equally troubling instances, the current state of the global trade around the human body, its use as raw material for medical research, its privatisation as intellectual property and its commercial exploitation by biotech companies. It happened in Albania, a small poor country in the Balkans in the sixties of the past century. Through the eyes of a few of the many thousands of people who experienced this extraordinary period, our film tells the story of the families that were forcefully separated by the Communist regime of Enver Hodja - the longest lasting European dictator of the 20th century. When in 1961 Albania broke off relations with Soviet Union, Albanian men married to non-Albanian women were forced to split up with their wives and drive them from their houses. The official reason: fear of espionage. Those who did not obey spent years in prisons. Our film tells the stories of three couples - only three of the many couples of Albanian men married to foreign women. This was their only crime. The executioners of these outrages against them also participate in the film: the prosecutor Pandi Konomi, the investigator Dolores Veliay and the officer of the Albanian secret police “Sigurimi” - Yuli Hilla. The Portuguese dictator, Salazar, had been in power for more than 30 years by then. From the thousands of letters we discovered, it is clear that Salazar had strong popular support. He was loved and respected almost like a religious leader. Bought from a second-hand book dealer, these letters are now in our hands. They portray a country seen through the eyes of the greatest devotees of the regime. They express a blind adherence to fascist values and show the way fascism affected the intimate lives of women of all social classes. Some precious archive show these women screaming under the dictator window like adolescents in a rock concert. But Salazar was an austere man, celibate and apparently sexless. What did this love signify then ? Throughout the twentieth century, Iranian filmmakers have been involved in a constant struggle, first against the monarchy and then against Islamic power. This confrontation gave rise to an innovative and unique cinematography, exported today around the world. This film tells the story of the unexpected success of Iranian cinema, from the era of the Shah (1925), through the revolution and the Iran – Iraq war up to contemporary life. The crossed destiny of cinema with power is told through archive footage, extracts of pre and post revolution films and through interviews with the main protagonists of Iranian film industry. His whole body is an accusation, starting from his face: the “bad guy’s face”, one of a true brutish lout. His name is still associated today to the image of an appalling serial killer. Yet in fact how would one define the “bad guy’s face”? Has this typical criminal’s portrait evolved through the years? Which logics provided the parameters for a “bad guy’s face”? To our great surprise these questions propel us into a journey backwards to some of the most respectable places of 19th century, as the temples of science, on the tracks of the researchers animated by one common obsession: discover the laws which determine the individual’s future actions starting from their bodies. The existence of the two parallel communities - one Latvian, the other Russian, is the reality of the present day Latvia. Out of a total population of 2.5 million people in Latvia, nearly 1 million is Russian speaking, the majority of which has settled here since the Soviet invasion in 1941. How does this new “minority”, which hitherto has always had the privileges of a majority, feel today in this new European state? Why are so many younger generation Russians out on the streets today? Why did so many Russian speaking people, and those who had recently gained citizenship, vote against the European Union and why do they still support the left wing and pro-Moscow politicians? Is it a question of grand politics, of big issues; is it the external workings of very complicated political cogs in a number of different political systems? (FRANCE) SHOAH and PIN-UPS is a film about breaking a taboo. In his art the 80-year old New York NO! Artist, Boris Lurie, brings together what doesn’t belong together: the gassed corpses and the naked, the Shoah and pin-ups. It’s not perverted art, but a comment on a perverted society, says Lurie, and he draws a line from the Shoah to the war in Iraq. And he would have so liked to have painted comfortable, comforting things, like the Impressionists did. But something kept him from doing that. And that something is what this film searches. The search takes us via Riga and Buchenwald to the New York of the 50s and 60s, when NO! Art developed as an obstinate reaction to Pop Art. Boris Lurie’s NO! is his motto: NO! to the expectations of the art market. NO! to bourgeois decorum! NO! to victim mentality. A film about the timeless timely questions of remembering and about coping with the extermination of the Jews through art. Secrets of the struggle: the journey of a young woman, who travels to Uruguay in search of the what really happened to her family during the darkest years of the Uruguayan dictatorship. From the French Bask country to South America, she follows their steps and explores their individual struggles, whether these were through union or legal political actions, or through clandestine activities within an urban guerrilla organisation called the Tupamaros, many of their actions in these events they have kept silent about, even to their immediate families. On April 26, 1986, a nuclear explosion released a toxic cloud at Chernobyl in northern Ukraine. In the following days, this plume spewed 70% of its radioactive fall-out over Belarus, whose border is just seven kilometers from the Chernobyl nuclear power station. The world-at-large was unsuspecting, and it quickly forget that the remainder of the fatal deposit was released over the northern hemisphere. This film concentrates entirely on Belarus, whose population in the twenty years since the disaster have been condemned by the effects of the ingestion of small doses of radioactivity. EURODOC-SCREENING 2005 The ambition of this film is to give witness to the process of slow death, to reveal the imminence of the genetic catastrophe, and to untie the threads of the international conspiracy of silence, all of which threaten this country. It also aims to alert the world to the danger that this organized disinformation represents for the immediate future. Its actors are human beings full of humanity - the neglected victims of the contamination, doctors and scientists, and scientific activists - not willing to abandon themselves to a worst-possiblescenario. Their subject matter, the atom, is invisible and indescribable; their wager is to show its materiality, and to say something of its meaning. What they have to say often flies in the face of established truths, in the same way as does this film. Their adversaries are the nuclear lobby and the comfort of ignorance. Their weapon is reality: that of a world that one strives to make more palatable. The mummification of the Bolshevik Leader was the very first act of theatrical deception by an ideology that was giving itself a living God. The adventures of Lenin’s mummy are in a direct sense a reflection of the history of the Soviet Union. Mixing both visible history and the dark secrets that were brought to the surface by the disintegration of the USSR, “Forever Lenin”, is a sort of autopsy of Vladimir Ilitch’s mummy. At the same time, among gangsters and “New Russian”, the temptation of immortally continues to stimulate emulation within Russia today. In 1994, filmmaker and auteur Khady Sylla attempted to film a documentary about homeless psychiatric patients who roam the streets of Dakar, but the images were overexposed and appeared to be unusable. Some of them now form the beginning of another attempt by Sylla to portray insanity. In the past years, the director herself has also suffered the pain of a deeply troubled mind - she has crossed over "to the other side." Sylla feels drawn to her main subject, the expressive Aminta Ngom, who spends her days confined to the courtyard of her family's house. Despite the simplistic use of camera, the film is complex and layered, and Sylla relates to Ngom in different ways: as a director who is aware of her film crew, as an equal beside her neurotic friend, and as a narrator who looks into the camera and describes the mental state of her subject with stylised, powerful words. The intimacy of the shared experiences is disturbed by the intrinsically unequal relationship between director and psychiatric patient. Une fenêtre ouverte is simultaneously a portrait, a self-portrait and a lucid illustration of damaged self-awareness in which no sense of time, but only moments exist. Nowadays, her life is reconstructed by another fictional character, Jonas, young man living in Berlin-Est whom she came to know late in life and whose own family history echoes the life of our heroine. Jonas's subjective reconstruction of Clara B.'s story highlights the destiny of a free woman in the 20th century and provides an alternative insight into recent events in Europe's history, some of which have had a veil cast over them. Per Sempre probes the motivations that lead some women to choose a secluded life inside religious communities. The film originated from a basic question that compelled the director to take a look inside these communities: how can it be possible for a woman today to make such an extreme and irrevocable choice, one that lasts forever? This question raises issues that perhaps cannot be described or explained in words, but that enable us to catch the essential aspirations behind this choice: the value of community, the attempt to transcend the ego in a perspective of faith and love, the sense of discipline as the constant reference point of an “extra-ordinary” way of life. As she meets them - former activists having given up any political activity and newer ones having grown up in the midst of various associations - Fulvia is reminded of her own story and that of her old country. She also gets to know better today’s Italy, a very controversial and ill-treated country, especially by those who run it. Berlusconi wins the elections and an opposition reorganises itself, first led by the anti-globalisation movement in Genoa. Other events and other disappointments were to come up until the latest European elections. History with a capital H, and history with a small one : they look alike and need one another to make progress. This is the reason why Fulvia agreed to run as a candidate in the local elections in her hometown together with the people that she filmed over four years. The only place that proves to be possible for this meeting is Saudi Arabia. Despite all the dangers, the family members living in exile pretend to be Muslim pilgrims in order to be allowed to enter the holy cities of Medina and Mekka. There, in a small hotel, room the long awaited, tearful reunion takes place after 20 years of separation. It proves to be a huge culture clash between the Muslim world and the western societies of Europe and America. In December 1914, an unheard of event occurred. Soldiers from Germany, France and England came out of their trenches and fraternized with the enemy. They sang together, exchanged food, and showed each other photographs of their families. In some places, it lasted nearly a fortnight and entailed the passive complicity of officers. According to the military code of the day fraternizing was a war crime, a failure of duty and a cowardly act, guilty soldiers should have been shot. Today then, fraternization is to be commemorated. Why ? It is interesting to question the topic and put it in its historical context. In recounting these events which in retrospect appear somehow unreal, the film tries to understand the mind set of those times. While fraternization remained marginal, what it reveals about the soldiers involved is far more telling than the ‘official’ version, history has accustomed us to. Besides recounting these events and the ensuing commotion brought upon military staff, we will look at the reasons as to why fraternization happened, and also why it was not more frequent. Through archives, and photographs but also soldiers’ letters from Germany and France, we will try to get closer to the mentalities and views of those times... Exiled to Zanzibar in the 70s where he lives among the impoverished nobility, hero of Loustal's cult comic strip, The Blue Note, Wilen was as famous for his brilliant appearances as for his inexplicable disappearances. This film essay reconstitutes his rich, mysterious life even as it attempts to distinguish the man from the myth. With the participation of Laurent de Wilde, Philippe Garrel and Archie Shepp. On April 30th, 1945 at Pedascala, a small mountain community in North-east Italy, a retreating German platoon massacred 82 innocent civilians, among them women and children. The reasons behind this retaliation remain unknown. In 1994 documents were uncovered containing the Anglo-American investigations on Nazi war crimes, labeled "Temporarily Archived", a prefectly executed shelving. The impossibility of finding and punishing a guilty party shifts the emphasis of the question who? to the question why? Is someone guilty for having provoked this wild reaction in the German soldiers? Several versions of the event, gathered by the surviving members, become the tracks to follow in order to confront this contoversial and uncomfortable memory. Through letters and interviews this emotionally charged film recalls the dilemmas made by many when faced by political events; the dilemmas that attempt to resolve the moral imperative of revolutionary change without sacrificing the emotional needs of family. The author embarks on a personal journey in an attempt to find out how history came to repeat itself in so many ways. It explores why some people choose to look beyond their own self-interest to work for a better future for all. It asks how they came to the choices that they did. Choices between family and political beliefs ? Choices that echo through the years with the repeating themes, passion and politics; exile, and return; love and country and belonging. Journeying from Russia to South Africa, via England, this intimate exploration draws on the migrations and conflict of the 20th Century, to reconcile the personal wounds left by all-consuming need to a fight for a dream. That was 17 years ago. He has decided to follow the old man on his last trip back to Arlit to see his son and old friends, allowing the director to introduce us to this desert frontier town.?Back in the 70s, Arlit was the Eldorado and fulcrum of the region due to COGEMA’s uranium mining operation. Arlit has become a ghost town since the Touareg rebellion and the French company’s withdrawal, and has now been transformed into a stop-off point for illegal immigrants heading for Algeria. New laws were implemented and new methods of investigation were put to the test for the first time. This region in the former GDR, was powered by a vital industry with thousands of miners ploughing the grounds for brown coal up until twelve years ago. Today the workers have lost their jobs and the ripped-open mining landscape has literally petrified into a vast, empty desert. A desert that has a beauty of its own; a unique moonlike landscape that triggers contrasting feelings; it is a surreal surrounding – awesome and extreme. And it is doomed. LAUBAG, a semi-federal organization is determined to ‘domesticate’ this wild area through a massive "back-to-nature"-program, intending to turn the impressive remnants of human history into picturesque, innocent lakes. In opposition to this plan there is a renowned institute, the "IBA Fürst Pückler". What they strive for has the potential to integrate not only the people, but also their identity and the pride they take in it. What they see is the unique and fantastic chances, which this manmade landscape holds for them. Baghdad, April 2004. As Iraq is daily shaken by current violence, members of the religious Shiite community prepare to brave the road to Kerbala to carry out their annual pilgrimage, which was banned under Saddam’s dictatorship. This ritual ends the 40 dayperiod of mourning which commemorates the death of Mohammed’s grandson, Imam Hussein, who was beheaded in 680 AD. Despite the risk and dangers of the situation, a young Lebanese Canadian woman impassioned by Shiism, accompanies the pilgrims on the road. The Road to Kerbala captures her investigative journey on the 110 kilometre-walk from the Iraqi capital to the Shiite capital. Through her vision and the narrative of her main character, a Shiite poet and former political prisoner, we penetrate into the heart of the long-oppressed Shiite community of Iraq. Along the road, we experience religious and social rituals, political demonstrations, encounters with American soldiers and the peaceful countryside of Iraq. This personal journey reveals an intimate view of this community, which both embraces death and celebrates life in their new-found freedom. Louisette, Eliette and Fatma, go back to where it all happened in Algiers and tell us their story of their commitment to put an end to social injustice. Hunted down by French paratroopers, they were arrested in 1957 and tortured. They ended the war in prisons and in camps. The solidarity borne of their imprisonment was a lesson in humanity and has led to lasting friendships. Forty years later, Louisette Ighilahriz reaches the end of a long quest to pay tribute to the man who saved her from torture. This quest for the facts to be acknowledged is also a way for these women to pay tribute to a few French military officers who had an exemplary and noble attitude. Our film is also a quest to understand the identity of a generation of women and men who have never spoken out about this war. This can be seen in his paintings, which reflect every major discovery of the 20th Century. His signature is directly influenced by a scientific image. Dalí read scientific literature compulsively, from psychoanalysis to quantum mechanics, and mathematics to genetics. He befriended researchers in physics, mathematics, biology and other disciplines. Scientists were surprised to discover that beyond the façade of a clownish showman was a brilliant artist with whom they could have meaningful discussions at the crossroads of art and science. Checkmate analyses the events surrounding the Romanian Revolution, revealing for the first time how the superpowers were involved and above all, why. When Ceausescu refused to accept the reforms sweeping Eastern Europe in 1989, the ruthless Romanian dictator unwittingly rushed headlong into his own destruction. Little did he know of the agreements reached concerning Europe’s destiny: though both Bush and Gorbachev pursued their own aims, the two statesmen had come to terms on this question. But then there was the problem of Germany. Mitterand and Thatcher made a simple stipulation. First Western and Eastern Europe mist be united, before the reunification of Germany could take place. As the last of the hard-liners in the Warsaw Pact, only Ceausescu stood in the way… If Europe’s division should end and Germany was to be reunited, Romania’s dictator had to be overthrown. Upon the backdrop of the one of the most exiting and moving episodes of history – the Romanian Revolution and Ceausescu’s overthrow – this documentary revels and exemplifies the working of power politics. At the heart of Chilean Patagonia, the economic activity – especially stock breeding and forestry development- exploits the local natural resources knowing no limit. These days, a new threat is looming for the Aisen province: the setting up of a huge industrial complex, of which the site work is planned to begin in 2003. Meeting some of the inhabitants of this southern region, some of these pioneers’ and Indians’ sons, it will be their turn to speak so we can better understand what are the stakes and contradictions of this country which has been described as an “economical model” in Latin America since the end of the 80s. Suddenly, everything seems possible! Twenty years later we embark on a global journey to explore the progressive and continual genetic manipulation of plants, animals and human beings: Due to a disastrous crop with genetically modified cotton many Indian farmers face ruin, have to sell one of their kidneys or resort to committing suicide. In Canada genetically modified canola seeds blow onto the fields of neighbouring organic farms, thus making ecological farming impossible. The Icelandic parliament sells the entire pool of genes of its population to a private company that, in turn, intends to turn over the data at a profit to the pharmaceutical industry and insurance companies. A research project is designated as "vampire project” in which blood, hair and saliva samples are taken from 700 so-called ethnic groups on the verge of extinction on the pretext of preventive health. The gene samples wander into the laboratories of industry to provide the basis for valuable patents. Worldwide only a handful of idealistic scientists are defying industry, doing independent – without the financial support of industry – research on the effects of transgenic animals and plants on the environment and our health when we consume genetically modified food. 2004 Awards: "1.Price for best long production (The Carmo Bernardes trophy)" 6th FICA – International Environmental Film Festival, Goias / Brazil "Nominee for NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA AWARD" 23rd Vancouver International Film Festival 2004 "Nominee for IDA Award"International Documentary Association IDA’s 20th Annual Awards Competition 2004, Los Angeles / USA Ökomedia Award "Golden Lynx" for the best journalistic achievement 21st International Environmental Film Festival OPERNFIEBER LENGTH : 70 MIN EURODOC-PRODUCTION 2002-2003 DIRECTOR : KATHARINA RUPP PRODUCER : JORG KOBEL COMPANY : BARBAROSSAFILM (GERMANY) It sounds like a relic from a time long forgotten but they still exist, people hired to be the life and soul of the opera. Among many other artistic disciplines, he did various and known contributions to the Cinema with capital letter, but he also invented a new form of cinema. He discovered that he could realise his dream by showing himself in front of the camera. It's been a surrealist cinema, made out of short scenes, with a sole actor and director of scene, the famous Salvador Dalí acting out all sorts of eccentric roles. Cinema, Dalí brings about a completely new perspective on Salvador Dalí. Its investigation work has brought back into light and put back in order more than forty hours of images of archives from around the world. As new images appeared, the documentation team discovered links between them that threw a new light on Dalí's cinematographic ideas. The end result is a film approved by the Gala and Salvador Dali Foundation, the heir of the painter. If up until now we only knew about Dalí's work with the great film-directors Buñuel, Disney or Hitchcock, historians will now have to open a new chapter and a new genre dedicated to the cinema of Dalí. It is a saga of hope in the face of despair, of love flowering out of tragedy. A film told through a poignant love story that will merge the past with the present, bringing survivors from a long-forgotten World War II rescue together again for the first time since 1944, and showing the consequences of war on people like you and me. This is the story of a relationship between a mother, Glinda, and her son, Chantz. It is a relationship that is ambiguous, but full of tenderness and complicity, that presents itself as a fabulous story. Chantz, the 'chance', was given the name because he should never have been born. Glinda, a black American 'fat woman', comes from Mississippi, the land where the legend of gospel music emerged from the terrible poverty. He has been playing the trumpet since the age of five. He has exceptional talent that fascinates the public and arouses the interest of well known artists. Chantz and his mother live their life on the road, in shabby hotels and fantastic palaces, depending on the invites they receive. Without being absolutely poor, they have no fixed address. Chantz plays in the street, but also in the most prestigious places. He does not go to school because everyday he is attending the 'school of life'. With his humour and charm, he has a gift when it comes to extraordinary meetings. Chantz is not only the child prodigy of a pygmalion mother. He is also the only hope for a woman who has pulled herself out of misery, determined to do something with her life. Over a two year period, under the critical and curious eye of a director, they continue on their path which is sometimes dangerous and uncertain. The story will be given rhythm, with accelerations and pauses, joy and pain, like a blues song or an improvised piece of jazz. A maxim reads: „De mortuis aut nihil aut bene". The Balkans are always held in bad repute. I wonder whether their ill fame is all to the good because nevertheless it means that we are alive. With this film I would like to show the Balkans from a different standpoint - the standpoint of a person who being unable to change his birthplace and doesn't want to emigrate to West, is trying to get to know the Balkans and understand them. The song, which the people in different Balkan countries claim to be theirs, will be used to create an absurd situation. A situation in which nobody will ever miss an opportunity to play down the other man, to make fun of him, to bring forward his shortcomings. "Whose is this song" is a unique opportunity to make a film with a sense of humour about all us that live as neighbours in the Balkans. About that common trait of ours, which make us certain that all that is good is ours and all that is bad is our neighbour's. Each and everyone in the Balkans claims what is good is only his and discounts the possibility that it can belong to the neighbour. That’s the way it is even when it comes to a song. 500 years later, Leonardo’s Gioconda remains probably the most famous painting in the world. From the chaste and young wife of Giocondo, a Florentine civil servant, she became a madonna secluded within the walls of Palaces, under the vigilance of kings and aristocrats. Vincenzo Peruggia, a keeper at the Louvre, kidnapped her in 1911, and nothing of her whereabouts was known until two years later. She even suffered an attack in 1956, when an insane Bolivian man hurled her a stone. In 1963 she made her first transatlantic journey : In Washington she met JFK and Jacqueline. Ten years later (1974), she flew to Tokyo and Moscow. And now, the kind Japanese are arranging a 200 square-meter flat only fo her. She has hundreds of sites on the Web, and her face on an infinity of objects. It is the monalisamania, an icon of the culture of the masses. The project “Orphelins et sans pays”, developed within EURODOC, has not been totally abandoned but was delayed sine die because of political reasons. However, all the work that had been done with the director for this project, especially with ARTE, has lead to a new film: “Afghanistan, an Impossible State?” that we were previously referring to. On the one side, the hunters, and on the other, the prey. A tracked man. But a man who refuses to give in. A man who denounces, rises up and accuses. For nearly twenty years, between 1851 and 1870, Victor Hugo personified all of Europe's democratic ideas by nearly singly standing up to Napoleon the third’s despotism. For twenty years, he paid for this struggle for freedom by an exile at first forced then voluntary. For twenty years, because of his ideas and writings, he was the object of unending police persecution and espionage. It seemed to us timely, upon the occasion of the commemorations to accompany the bicentennial of Victor Hugo's birth in 2002, to relate these twenty years of headstrong struggle of a man alone against the arbitrary of absolute power. Twenty years of rupture in the life and work of one of the monumental figures of French literature and the 19th century. During that time there were women and men who put up resistance, swapping their normal lives for an ideal. Many were arrested, tortured, or lived life underground. Many had children, the product of better times and the opportunity to develop and enjoy a relationship. Soon, however, they would have to give up those children, as a true family did not correspond to the realities experienced. Contacts were scarce and made under a dense security blanket: informers and spies were a real danger. Many children were only reunited with their parents after the fall of the dictatorship. Others lost their faces in the depths of their memories. While some would never forgive their parents for having abandoned them for the sake of an ideology, others would follow their path embracing similar ideals. Who are these boys and girls, today? The film draws a picture of the around-fortygeneration in the rush hour of their lives. What consumes the time at home? Play, relaxation, idle closeness with the family? Or work that never ends after the invention of mobile phones and e-mails? Free time taken over by kid’s hobbies? What space is left for play and playfulness. Or, maybe it is the grim Finnish culture with protestant ethics that prohibits us having fun after a certain age? Eventually the film is a portrait of this generation and how the world is different to their generation and to the next – or to the ones before them. This is achieved by using interviews (parent’s and children’s), a massive amount of 8mm films, photographs and archive material from the 70’s and 80’s, direct cinema scenes and by a subjective narration by the filmmaker which will interweave this all together. The style of the narration will be funny, even laconic. In Cuba they can! Michel Miglis – a Swedish music producer, known for his provocative ideas and El Medico – a doctor and a singer, born and raised in the midst of the Cuban Revolution and who’s values are in total contrast to the cynical Western music industry. It all started from a mix tape, where Michael suddenly heard a fantastic voice. After long-lasting search Michael found the owner of the voice high up in the Sierra Madre Mountains. Michael was met with great suspicion – „another tourist who wants to steal a slice of Cuban culture”. But after a while El Medico started to trust Michel and the song “Chupa Chupa” was recorded. The song became a worldwide hit! Then the trouble began! The film is based on paradoxes of Cuba. It’s a prison for its nation but also an oasis of very emphatic people. It’s a country of poverty but where you look after your own. It’s an island where state owns its subjects from cradle to grave but where people still manage to live the day and enjoy the moment. Cuban Reggaeton is an underground musical movement in this archaic society; a commercial music as a subversive force in a cultural reactionary but social revolutionary society. At first sight their function is not as significant as that of tank brigades, airforce units or paratroopers. But it is on their field kitchens (there is a reason why they are nicknamed “goulash-canons“) that the success of “armed stomachs“ – the soldiers, depends on. Without its cooks the army loses its strength and thus, its sense. The army cooks had the ability of influencing the moods and performance of the soldiers. They made an impact on history by their pots and pans. The film is going to be based on personal stories of a variety of army cooks. Together with them, we are going to watch “Grand History“ from behind the stoves. This documentary examines the life and art of Antoine D’Agata and the reality which inspires his images, following the journalist Philippe Azoury’s journey in Cambodia, where the photographer is currently working. “Too much but not enough” is a journey, a dizzying descent to the obsessions of an artist who lives his life in extreme and desperate way, to the desolation of the remoter districts of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in a context of exploitation, desire and perdition. Or, on the contrary, can religion be a positive influence for peace and progress around the globe? Out of Cordoba will take us from New York after the 9/11 attacks, to Spain, Morocco, Paris, Berlin, Qatar, Cairo, and Jerusalem, along the way looking for evidence of dialogue and the mythic convivencia (coexistence) where Jews, Christians and Muslims lived in mutual tolerance and peace. In this search, we follow the footsteps of Maimonides and Averroes, two medieval geniuses who, both born in the city of Cordoba in Muslim Spain, and each one from within his own faith, courageously attempted to harmonize faith and science, reason and revelation. While their controversial ideas caused their own communities to burn the books of Averroes and Maimonides, their writings form a crucial link between classic Greece philosophy and Western thinking, and thus helped chart the path from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
