MACRO Overview (variation du S&P500 après la clôture européenne : -0.02%) In Europe : Draghi vs Ukraine, the last fight! We saw interesting flows yesterday: First, Wall Street ended higher yesterday after seeing strong earnings in the previous session, bolstered by Citigroup’s results retail sales statistics. Investors, however, once again took profit on the biotech securities at the end of the session. While this profit-taking led to temporary downturn, the NASDAQ biotech index ended the session virtually unchanged (-0.02%). We will, however, pause on the retail sales figures: In March, in the United States, they saw their biggest increase in 18 months, thus confirming an economic recovery due largely to the polar winter. It bears highlighting, however, that yesterday’s equity rally was in small volumes; the 1850 mark on the S&P index will have to be surpassed for peace of mind – although we are confident about the U.S. economy’s acceleration in Q2. Moreover, if Chinese Q1 GDP results are not as catastrophic as some anticipate, we could see some positive momentum in the markets. To this is added the WTO’s increased growth in world trade, with the latter organisation bringing its expected earnings growth for international trade for 2014 to 4.7%, while saying that a return to its historical trend of 5.3% should not be expected before 2015. "EU demand has been weighing on world imports for the past couple of years, but it’s starting to turn around,” said WTO economist, Coleman Nee. If markets are asking themselves questions about certain sectors in the U.S. economy (Biotech, Internet), in Europe, investors are torn between Draghi’s everincreasing, persistent noise and the ominous, ever-louder thud of boots in Ukraine. It comes as no surprise that the Russian stock index is plunging back into negative territory against the background of tightening sanctions against Russian or pro-Russian Ukrainian nationals announced last night. Europeans are now "stuck" on the Ukrainian issue, and we now have to suffer such comments as the ‘PROVOCATIVE AND UNPROFESSIONAL’ kind, when speaking of the repeated Russian jet fly-bys near U.S. ships stationed in the Black Sea... Indeed, the currency has lost some 35 % of its value against the dollar since the beginning of the year due to the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. That being said, the ‘Draghi Effect’ is still being seen on equity, as it is – somewhat - on the currency markets. Moreover, inflows into European bond funds are impressive. That being said, the ‘Draghi Effect’ is still being seen on equity, as it is – somewhat - on the currency markets. Moreover, inflows into European bond funds are impressive. Yesterday, Noyer announced that the ECB could buy all financial assets, were it to embark on a round of QE – including private and sovereign debt. The Germans must have loved that... If everyone has their own trigger-point between 1.45 and 1.50 on the Eurodollar, Bloomberg sees a 65% likelihood of ECB intervention, whatever its form, in the next two months ... Should lower interest- and deposit rates be favoured, Benoît Cœuré noted that the amount balance sheets are increased is not in itself a reference point, but rather, it is the ability to influence financing conditions by borrower category and country that will be important. He cites a buyback programme of private and sovereign debt with maturities ranging from one to ten years; with a 10-year yield at 3.15 % and a deflationary situation, the real Spanish rate is positive by 3.25%, compared to Germany’s 0.3 %, and the approximately 1.4% in France. For now, the Forex market shows that there is nothing on the horizon. Greece is showing signs of improvement in its accounts: The Greek central government posted a primary budget surplus (excluding debt service) of EUR 1.6 billion in Q1 – more than triple the amount of Q1 2013, stated Alternate Minister of Finance, Christos Staikouras; this figure is almost double the EUR 878 million target initially fixed for that period. In terms of specific flows, buyers of Emerging Market ETF switched into second gear: according to movements within the reference iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF Index Fund (USD 36.8 billion in AuM), the latest spike in the graph below represents an inflow of USD 2bln, and here is where it currently stands: Created ETF EEM shares INFORMATION IMPORTANTE – UNIQUEMENT POUR INVESTISSEURS PROFESSIONNELS : Merci de vous référer aux informations à la fin du document. BANQUE LOMBARD ODIER & CIE SA · GOOD MORNING GENEVA · 15 APRIL 2014 PAGE 2/9 LOMBARD ODIER We therefore remain positive on China, South Korea and Taiwan. If our China Policy and China Fresh Air themes are currently somewhat heckled, after our trip to China, we are even more confident than we were before. To these themes is added our latest certificate on Taiwan: its performance since launch is rather interesting in against a rather complicated backdrop for tech sector companies. Today, stocks such as Chaun-Choung (+5.92 %), Faraday (+3.26 %) and Largan Precision (+2.59 %) carry the theme. It is worth noting that Asian press has leaked the announcement of the September release of the Apple iPhone 6 in September in two screen versions (4.7 '' and 5.5'') for a total of 68 million units in 2014 – the first time an expected number of units is quoted in the press. Prices could increase by USD 100 (talking about inflation in the U.S.!) to include the cost of a larger screen and more advanced batteries. So, securities in the Apple ‘universe’ are rising (those of our Taiwan certificate are in bold: U.S. Synchronicity): Zhen Ding ( 4958 TT) up 6.07 % ; Radiant ( 6176 TT) up 4% ; TPK (3673 TT) up 4%; Largan ( 3008 TT) up 2.59 %; Hon Hai ( 2317 TT) up 1.5 %; Foxconn Tech ( 2354 TT) up 1.6 %; Simplo ( 6121 TT) up 1.76 %, and Career Tech ( 6153 TT) up 2 %. Sign that times have changed, Chinese broker CITIC Securities has announced the acquisition of a stake in the U.S. brokerage firm, BTIG LLC, and investment made through the group’s recent acquisition of CLSA, for a total of USD 1 billion that boosts CITIC’s workforce by some 1’500 employees worldwide across 21 cities in Asia, Europe and the U.S. Within the tech sectors, the SOX (the “defensive” character of which we had mentioned yesterday) was supported by expectations of good results from Intel, published today.
