knowledge of workplace chemicals, store and handle
workplace chemicals, and demonstrate knowledge of
procedures relating to workplace chemical spills.

Explanatory notes
1
Credit for this unit standard does not qualify a person as an approved chemical
handler. Those wishing to be certified as an approved chemical handler under the
Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 (HSNO Act) must meet the
requirements of that Act.

Legislative requirements include but are not limited to – Health and Safety in
Employment Act 1992 (HSE Act); Resource Management Act 1991; and the HSNO
Act.

Definitions
Organisational requirements refer to documented policies and to documented or
other directions provided to staff. These may include but are not limited to:
manufacturers’ procedures, plant procedures, suppliers’ instructions, site signage,
legislative requirements, codes of practice, company health and safety plans, on site
briefings, and supervisor’s instructions.
Workplace has the same meaning as place of work in the HSNO Act and the HSE
Act.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is responsible for assessing and
approving hazardous substances and, where appropriate, setting controls on the way
the substance is used. Any questions relating to the provisions for hazardous
substances should be directed to EPA New Zealand.

Evidence requirements
1.1
Workplace chemicals and their characteristics are identified using labels and
other data sources.
Range
1.2
Data relating to workplace chemicals are located and interpreted to identify first
aid requirements, potential hazards to personnel and the environment, and
required controls.
Range
1.3
other data sources include – signage, chemical data sheet, safety
data sheet.
HAZCHEM code warning statement, United Nations number,
chemical data sheets, safety data sheets, container labels.
Storage of workplace chemicals is explained in terms of containers, designated
storage areas, and segregation requirements.
Range
containers may include but are not limited to – drum, cylinder,
tank, carton, bottle;
storage areas may include but are not limited to – inside, outside,
bulk, bunded.
1.4
Hazards of handling workplace chemicals are identified, and procedures for
handling workplace chemicals are described in accordance with organisational
requirements.
1.5
Procedures for the disposal of workplace chemicals are described in terms of
organisational requirements.

includes but is not limited to – temporary storage, empty container,
redundant chemical.

2.1
Workplace chemicals are received, stored, and handled in accordance with
organisational requirements.

Documentation of workplace chemical use and storage is completed in
accordance with organisational requirements.
2.3
Workplace chemical inventory is maintained in accordance with organisational
requirements.

Demonstrate knowledge of procedures relating to workplace chemical spills.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Methods of dealing with workplace chemical spills are described in terms of
appropriateness for chemical type, location, and size of spill.
Range
methods include but are not limited to – contain, absorb, dilute,
wash, neutralise, dispose.
3.2
Procedures to be followed in the event of a chemical spill are located and
explained in accordance with organisational requirements.
3.3
Chemical spill equipment is identified and explained in terms of location and
contents.
Range
3.4
equipment relevant to candidate’s workplace.
Spill reporting procedures are outlined in accordance with organisational and
legislative requirements.
