13 Marandre Blakker 2009 Alco Bakanc 2009 COURSE OVERVIEW & STRUCTURE «STRIP’TEASE HOUSING» The 2009-2010 academic year is divided into two semesters each of 14 weeks duration. The overall programme for this will be as follows for the twin ateliers Bakker & Blanc: Autumn semester, Bachelor semester 3 14.09.09-16.12.09 - Warm-up Exercise: How to extend a Hairdryer (wks 1-3) - Project 1: «Junge komm bald wieder» (wks 4-14) - Excursion to Zürich (wk 4) Spring semester, Bachelor semester 4 22.02.10-04.06.10 - Project 2: «A Hard Days Night» (wks 1-14) - Excursion to London (t.b.a.) Structure of the twin ateliers: The twin ateliers Bakker & Blanc will function as one unit in terms of the content of the course; i.e. all theory components, external inputs, critics, excursions, etc. However, each professor will be responsible for their own atelier on an individual level, a more intimate group of students whose work they will follow in detail for the duration of the semesters; i.e. 1 on 1 contacts, table critics, group discussions, etc. This structure gives the students «the best of both worlds». As a group they will experience how «putting-their-heads-together» is the driving force behind the design methodology of Bakker & Blanc, whilst building up a close rapport with one specific professor on an individual level to maintain a continuity in the projects. 27 THE REQUIREMENTS «JUNGE KOMM BALD WIEDER» Rendu 23. 09.09 18.00 Extension d’un foën Objet Image A3 Horizontal + PDF image 21.10.09 18.00 Critique intermédiaire I Projet I Analyse Maquette de recherche Masterplan 1/1000 Masterplan 1/500 Maquette Image 3D A3 Horizontal + PDF Libre A1 Horizontal + PDF A1 Carton gris A1 Horizontal + PDF 18.11.09 18.00 Critique intermédiaire II Projet I Plans, Coupes, Façades 1/200 Plans 1/50 Plan constructif axo 1/20 Coupes/Façades 1/50 Images 3D A1 Horizontal + PDF A1 Horizontal + PDF A1 Horizontal + PDF A1 Horizontal + PDF A1 Horizontal + PDF 14.12.09 18.00 Critique finale Projet I Masterplan 1/500 maquette Plans, Coupes/Façades 1/50 Maquette 1/20 Coupe 1/10 Maquette application Images 3D A1 Carton gris A1 Horizontal + PDF Libre A1 Horizontal + PDF Libre A1 Horizontal + PDF Présentation Pecha Kucha chaque jeudi « Input » 2 étudiants selon programme. There, on a two-hectare site, he piles up with his bare hands paving bricks, paving stones, kerbstones and other discarded street rubble while allowing nature to proceed about him unhindered. Le Roy calls this fascinating jungle populated by large stacked edifices an Eco-Cathedral. The ideas underpinning Le Roy’s project are the importance of the time factor in spatial processes, and working with complex, dynamic systems and networks. Inspired by the Nobel Prize-winner Ilya Prigogine, Le Roy pondered the following question: ‘What can one person achieve working with nature in space and time?’ Le Roy’s position on these concepts is at odds with the often rapid, superefficient, function-hugging approach to greenspace and nature in the Netherlands. The Eco-Cathedral is a place where time regains space and space regains time. Le Roy expects it to be continued by others at least until the year 3000. To ensure the continuation of LeRoy’s philosophy for future generations, the Time Foundation was established to promote insight and knowledge of the notion of ‘time’ as a condition for the creative development of cooperation between natural and creative human processes in space and time. Meanwhile, LeRoy’s work in Mildam carries on and is open to the public. (Text from www.slowlab.net) “The methods of today’s planners will not prepare them for the enormous problems that they will have to face in the next century. One of the first things they have to do is accept infinite time within their thinking system.” (Louis Le Roy) 99 Gantenbein Winery 2006, Gramazio & Kohler MATERIALITY + Architecture and Urbanism: Non-Standardised Brick Façade 2006. Because construction was already quite advanced, we had only three months before assembly on site. This made manufacturing the 72 façade elements a challenge both technologically and in terms of deadlines. As the robot could be driven directly by the design data, without our having to produce additional implementation drawings, we were able to work on the design of the façade up to the very last minute before starting production. To accelerate the manufacturing process for the 400 square metre façade, we had to develop an automated process for applying the two-component bonding agent. Because each brick has a different rotation, every single brick has a different and unique overlap with the brick below it, and the one below that. Together with the brick manufacturer’s engineer, we established a method in which four parallel bonding agent paths are applied, for each brick individually, at pre-defined intervals to the central axis of the wall element. Load tests performed on the first elements manufactured revealed that the bonding agent was so structurally effective that the reinforcements normally required for conventional prefabricated walls were unnecessary. Ghana/Nigeria. www.elanatsui.com «Art grows out of each particular situation, and I believe that artists are better off working with whatever their environment throws up.» (El Anatsui, 2003). Throughout his career Ghanaian artist El Anatsui has experimented with a variety of media, including wood, ceramics and paint. Most recently, he has focused on discarded metal objects, hundreds or even thousands of which are joined together to create truly remarkable works of art. Anatsui indicates that the word gawu (derived from Ewe, his native language) has several potential meanings, including «metal» and «a fashioned cloak.» The term, therefore, manages to encapsulate the medium, process and format of the works on view, reflecting the artist’s transformation of discarded materials into objects of striking beauty and originality. The metal fragments that constitute the raw material of Anatsui’s work have had a profound impact on the West African societies that use, reuse and finally discard them. Several of his metal «cloths» are constructed with aluminum wrappings from the tops of bottles that once contained spirits from local distilleries. The three-dimensional sculptures are made of the discarded tops of evaporated milk tins, rusty metal graters and old printing plates, all gathered in and around Nsukka, Nigeria, where the artist has lived and worked for the last 28 years. Drawing on the aesthetic traditions of his native Ghana and adopted Nigeria, as well as contemporary Western forms of expression, Anatsui’s works engage the cultural, social and economic histories of West Africa. Through their associations, his humble metal fragments provide a commentary on globalization, consumerism, waste and the transience of people’s lives in West Africa and beyond. Their re-creation as powerful and transcendent works of art--many of which recall traditional practices and art forms--suggests as well the power of human agency to alter such harmful patterns. Development implies breaking away from existing structures. To reach optimal artistic expression, it is crucial for the artist to be able to deploy himself or herself without being subject to the restrictions of civil morality. The objective of AVL-Ville is to create an environment where this is possible. To reach this goal, the rights formulated below are to be seen as absolute, without any exceptions. Living at AVL-Ville can be experienced as a hard and confrontational artistic life. However, this is the ultimate consequence of an honest and uncompromising existence. The name Atelier Van Lieshout emphasises the fact that the works of art do not stem solely from the creative brain of Joep van Lieshout, but are produced by a creative team of artists, designers and architects. The works of art are practical, uncomplicated and substantial. The work varies from sculptures and furniture, bathrooms and mobile home units to large installations and complete architectural refurbishments. One of the many applications and techniques used by AVL are the large polyester constructions in striking, bright colours. These polyester constructions, of which the large mobile home units are the best known, form the AVL trademark. Recurring themes in the work of AVL are autarky, power, politics and sex.
