C est l histoire d un va-et-vient incessant entre deux jardins, celui de l
enfance, situé dans le quartier de Callithéa à Athènes, et le jardin du
Luxembourg, où le narrateur erre péniblement, soutenu par ses béquilles. Il
vient de subir une grosse opération, mais qui n intéresse plus personne,
sauf la dame qui tient les toilettes du jardin, un clochard nommé Ricardo, la
directrice du théâtre de marionnettes et un vieil homme à cheveux blancs
qui ressemble à Jean Valjean. La solitude fait peu à peu surgir autour de lui
tous les héros de son enfance, ceux qui ont réellement fréquenté le
Luxembourg, comme Jean Valjean et les trois mousquetaires, mais aussi
Tarzan qui ne comprend pas pourquoi on construit des maisons autour des
jardins alors qu il y a tant de places dans les arbres, des orphelins, des
pirates, des Indiens et Richelieu qui surveille tout ce petit monde à travers
les fenêtres du Sénat. Il y a aussi la mort, représentée par une marionnette
géante vêtue de blanc qui a des pattes de poulet à la place des mains et
une belle Italienne coulée dans du bronze.

venu dans le Pays de Neige pour retrouver Komako, une geisha, et Yôko,
une jeune femme rencontrée dans le train. Etrange relation triangulaire où
Shimamura pourra croire qu'il a trouvé l'unité qu'il cherche, unité du corps
