President’s Corner
In the absence of Al Rivard let me wish you and your
family, on his behalf and on behalf of the Board, the very
best for 2007. This year we will celebrate the 20th
anniversary of the St. George. As we have experienced in
the past year, this milestone in the life of a building comes
not only with celebrations but with necessary upgradings and repairs. As we have all noted, with some
inconvenience, the exterior garage ramps were completely
restored under the guidance of engineers. As part of same
contract, the paved portion of the driveway leading to the
ramps will require better finishing and levelling in the
sping. Now that this work has been completed the necessary
delayed repairs inside the garage will be undertaken.

celui du conseil de direction, de vous offrir nos meilleurs
vœux pour l’année 2007. Cette année sera bien spéciale
puisque nous célébrerons le vingtième anniversaire du St
George. Comme vous l’avez sûrement remarqué, l’élément
marquant de notre vie au St George ne relève pas
uniquement des fêtes que nous avons mais aussi des
améliorations et de l’entretien de l’édifice. Ceci étant dit,
les rampes extérieures du garage ont été restaurées sous la
supervision d’une équipe d’ingénieurs. Le contrat de
réfection se terminera au printemps avec le nivelage et le
pavage de l’entrée et de la sortie du garage. Les travaux au
garage qui ont été retardés seront entrepris sous peu.
The Waller Mall, source of water infiltration in our garage,
was also repaired and we are taking legal action against
the City of Ottawa to recuperate the cost of the work,
$30,000. The reason for this action is that, as you will
recall, the city had initially contracted the restoration of the
mall to which we had to contribute financially given that
some of the infrastructure is the responsibility of the St.
George. The work was not satisfactorily and even upon
threats of legal action the City refused to undertake the
necessary repairs.

Increased police presence plus several arrests of drug
dealers and aggressive panhandlers have reduced
undesirable activity in our area, specifically the Waller
mall.
Hiring of Security Guards at the Salvation Army has
also been an additional factor in improving client
behavior and increasing security for staff, clients and the
public.
Our monthly participation in the Byward Market Safety
& Security Committee has also generated a collective
strategy to pressure the City to deal with panhandling
and other ‘street’ issues.
Our first Emergency Medical Response Exercise in
November was a success from the point of view that our
Responders applied CPR and the AED within the
planned 5 minute limit. As expected, we noted a
number areas where we can do things better and faster
in the future and have sent a post exercise summary to
all responders and staff. Our next exercise will be in the
spring and may be ‘no notice’.
We have started rewriting the Emergency section of the
Residents Manual and the Security Staff Manual to
provide more information and guidance in dealing with
various emergencies. A final version should be ready
this spring

réduction des activités indésirables dans notre secteur et

Avec l’embauche de gardiens de sécurité à l’Armée du
salut, les comportements de certains bénéficiaires se
sont améliorés tout en favorisant une plus grande
sécurité dans notre secteur.
Notre participation mensuelle au comité de la sécurité
du Marché By a abouti à une stratégie commune qui
mettra une plus grande pression sur la ville afin qu’elle
s’implique davantage dans le contrôle des itinérants et
des problèmes de rue.
Notre première simulation d’urgence médicale en
novembre dernier fut un succès puisque les répondants
ont pratiqué le RCR et le DEA dans la limite critique de
cinq minutes. Nous avons relevé quelques points à
améliorer pour faire mieux et plus vite dans le futur et
les répondants ont reçu un rapport d’évaluation après la
simulation. Notre prochain exercice se tiendra au
printemps et vous n’en serez peut-être pas prévenus.
Nous remanions présentement la section du manuel des
résidents et du personnel de la sécurité sur les urgences
afin que nous puissions mieux réagir à diverses
situations. La version finale paraîtra au printemps.

Les ascenseurs
The Elevators
Suite à notre rencontre avec la compagnie Capital Elevator,
Bob Marcus et moi-même, un processus d’inspection des
ascenseurs a été initié avec le support du personnel de la
sécurité afin d’identifier la cause des pannes trop fréquentes
de l’ascenseur #2. Ce processus devrait aider les
techniciens à résoudre le problème. Rien n’a été relevé
depuis la dernière panne et l’ascenseur fonctionne bien pour
le moment. Les ascenseurs vieillissent; espérons qu’ils
continueront de fonctionner normalement.
Il arrive parfois que les témoins des boutons pressoirs des
ascenseurs sur les étages ne fonctionnent pas. On vous prie

Following a meeting with Capital Elevator, Bob Marcus and
myself, an elevator inspection process for our staff was
implemented a few months ago in order to attempt to
identify the source of the frequent failures of elevator #2,
(the centre elevator) and assist the elevator technicians in
fixing the intermittent problem. Although nothing specific
has been found, the technician reduced the speed of elevator
#2 and since then, it has been working fine. The elevators
are aging but I hope they will continue to work normally.

The St George Social Committee (Joanne Baillie, Pat
Hurley, Marie Loyer, Joanne Rivard and co-coordinators
Linda Justin and Mary Samson) thanks its helpers and
everyone for their participation in our fabulous Holiday
Party held December 3. It was a tremendous success, with
the most delicious food contributions we've ever had, a very
large number of neighbours meeting neighbours, and some
die-hards having such a great time that they lingered almost
2 hours past the official end time of the party.
