The motor pylon is simple and quick to assemble, and the work required is minimal. The motor pylon is easy to attach to the model securely, requiring no tools. Converting back from powered glider to pure glider also takes just a few seconds. If you do not have an assistant to launch for you (bungee or tow), and there is no suitable slope in the vicinity, the motor pylon is a great way of obtaining extended flights from your glider. Important note regarding glued joints When gluing plastic to plastic, or plastic to wood, the following points are important if you wish to obtain strong, durable joints: 1. Recommended adhesive: UHU plus acrylit, Order No. 933 2. The joint areas of plastic parts must be de-greased before gluing. Do not use acetone or other fluid solvent; a mild detergent solution is much safer. Avoid touching the surfaces after cleaning them. 3. Carefully sand the joint areas of plastic parts with 320-grit abrasive paper to roughen them. 4. Apply the adhesive thinly. Hold the joined parts together under moderate pressure while the glue is hardening. 5. Allow joints to dry out thoroughly in a warm, dry room. Tape or otherwise secure the parts while the glue is hardening, to prevent them shifting out of alignment. Assembly Saw out the pylon core (1). Cut out the drawing of the firewall (2), stick it to the piece of 3 mm plywood, and saw it out. Glue parts (1) and (2) together, keeping them exactly at rightangles. Important: if the motor is to be screwed to the firewall (2), the motor case must rest on the top edge of part (1) (check this before gluing). Screw the motor to the firewall. Connect the motor wires to the speed controller, taking care to maintain correct polarity. Run the wires down on either side of the pylon. Cut out the two side fairings (4) along the marked lines (cut slightly outside the lines initially), and sand to an exact fit. Final adjustment to follow the wing camber is made once the side panels have been glued in place; this is done by plugging in the wing panels from both sides, so that the airfoil can be marked on the mouldings. Cut away the vertical face of the two recesses which form the cooling air inlet and outlet. The upper fairing is held in place by six pan-head self-tapping screws. Drill 1.5 mm Ø pilot-holes for the screws beforehand. Mount the spinner and propeller driver on the motor shaft. The finished motor pylon can be finished in any colour of your choice.
