Course Description:
A twenty-five day French immersion course designed so students with varying levels of French
proficiency will improve their level of comprehension and speaking in addition to gaining an
exposure and appreciation of French culture. In addition to formal language instruction, students
will experience various aspects of France by exploring the museums and attractions of Paris,
hiking Mont Blanc near Chamonix, living in a home stay while attending language school in
Amboise and through completion of an oral history project.
During their ten days of intensive language instruction, students will participate in formal language
classes from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. During the afternoons, students will participate in hands-on
workshops (cooking class, discussions of French history and contemporary topics, tambourin
lesson, tasting local products, French film viewing and discussion) and excursions to local places
of interest (châteaux, gardens, etc.).

Course Objectives/Outcomes:
The main objective of Immersion France is for students to improve their French listening, reading,
writing and speaking skills through formal and experiential learning. Since this course is designed
for students with varying levels of French language experience and proficiency, the specific
objectives for each language level are different. Each level builds upon the concepts covered in
the previous level. Please see the lesson plans for each level for more detail. At the beginning of
the formal language instruction, the students will be tested on their French proficiency and will be
placed into the appropriate level out of the six levels offered:




Level A1 – Elementary French 1
 Students will be able to use basic grammatical structures, common regular verbs and the
present and near future tenses.
 Students will be prepared to express themselves simply, participate in basic social
interactions and accomplish daily tasks in French, such as introducing and speaking about
themselves, asking for things and making plans.
Level A2 – Elementary French 2
 Students will be able to use basic grammatical structures, regular verbs, prepositions and
the present, near future and polite conditional tenses.
 Students will be prepared to simply express themselves, participate in basic social
interactions and accomplish daily tasks in French, such as speaking about themselves and
others with some detail, asking for and giving directions, and making plans.
Level B1 – Intermediate French 1
 Students will be able to use more advanced French grammar including common irregular
and direct and indirect verbs, expressions of quantity and time, and masculine and
feminine pronouns.
 Students will be able to express themselves in more detail, participate in more in-depth
social interactions and easily accomplish daily tasks in French, such as interviewing
someone or participating in an argument or discussion.
Level B2 – Intermediate French 2
 Students will be able to use more advanced French grammar including the basics of
simple and anterior future, present and past conditional, and present and past subjunctive
tenses.
 Students will be able to express themselves in detail, participate in in-depth social
interactions, easily accomplish daily tasks and understand more figurative ways of
speaking.
Level C1 – Advanced French 1
 Students will be able to use advanced French grammar including the subjunctive and
conditional tenses and will understand the nuances of the French language.
 Students will gain a command of the cultural aspects of communication and will be able to
express themselves clearly in most situations.
Level C2 – Advanced French 2
 Students will be able to use advanced French grammar including the subjunctive,
conditional and simple past tenses and will understand nuances and forms of literary
expression in the language.
 Students will gain a command of the cultural aspects of communication and will be able to
express themselves clearly in nearly any situation.

Assessments:
Exams:
Reading comprehension and grammar knowledge are evaluated through a final multiple choice test
that is part of the Test d'Evaluation de Français (TEF by the Chamber of Commerce of Paris) and
demonstrates the student’s global comprehension level.
Journals:
Students will complete 7 journal entries throughout the course. The journal topics are designed to
encourage students to incorporate the broader themes of the course into short reflective essays.
Journals are graded on organization, quality of reflection, length, and how well the answer is
supported by additional information. Journals are typically due 24 hours after being assigned.
Oral History Project:
While students are living with home stay families, they will be asked to select one member of the
family with whom to conduct an in-depth oral history project. In French, students will ask about the
person’s life history and will write a report (4 pages minimum) which they will present to the group.

Workshop Component
Students will learn about French and practice their language skills through a series of workshops
and cultural expeditions:

Art History in the Louvre
o Students will learn about the major works exhibited in the Louvre and their
significance in both French and world history.
o Length: 3 hours

Paris History - Ile de la Cité and Notre Dame
o Students will walk the streets of Ile de la Cité and visit Notre Dame while learning
about the history of Paris and its architecture.
o Length: 3 hours

The French Revolution and Versailles
o Students will spend a day touring the grounds of the palace at Versailles while
learning about French royalty and the history of the French Revolution.
o Length: 3 hours

Mont Blanc History and Ecology
o During the six-day Mont Blanc circuit hike, students will learn about the
development of the trail and its flora and fauna. Students will also compare and
contrast the cultures of France, Switzerland and Italy as they make their way
around the largest mountain in Europe.
o Length: 6 hours total (1 hour per day)

Cooking and Local Products Workshop
o Students will learn about the foods and ways of cooking in France, particularly in
the Loire valley region. Students will visit the market to purchase items needed for
the workshop and will then assist a local cook in preparing traditional meals. We
will examine how the Loire valley’s geography and history has shaped its food.
o Length: 3 hours

The Kings of Touraine
o Students will learn about the rich history of the French monarchy in the Loire
valley, specifically focusing on François I and his connection to Amboise.
o Length: 1 hour
By the end of the course, all students will also have an informed understanding of the following as
