NEWSLETTER N°3 February/March 2016 DUCHESS HOUSE CALLING!!! We are happy to report that construction works are progressing nicely at 10 Duchess Street. The installation of additional ventilation is all but complete. Cabling for telephony and Internet are in place. Classrooms and ancillary rooms for instance the cantine, nurse office, music room, art room and locker room just need a coat of paint. Colours for the classrooms and reception furniture have been chosen and the carpet will be installed last. We plan to move during the Easter break and our students will take possession of their new premises on 11th April. Staff and students are all very excited about visiting their new school soon! We will provide dates very shortly. Stay tuned! 1

HIGHLIGHTS TOP OF THE BILL at EIFA !!!! What a festive and fantastic atmosphere on Tuesday 23rd February when the young and talented French composer-‐songwriter-‐singer Victor Le Douarec honoured us with an exceptional private concert with his latest songs. All the students (and teachers!) were utterly flabbergasted by the performance of the lead singer of the last French musical by France Gall and Bruck Dawit « Résiste » ! MANY THANKS TO HIM!!! 2

WAR HORSE NEW LONDON THEATRE L’ambiance était à la fête le jeudi 21 janvier lors du troisième temps fort du parcours artistique et culturel. Les collégiens ont assisté, pour leur plus grand plaisir, à la représentation théâtrale de War Horse au New London Theatre . Cette poignante adaptation du roman éponyme de Mickael Morpurgo, a particulièrement séduit nos jeunes journalistes par l’originalité de sa mise en scène. Ils ont d’ailleurs exprimé sans réserve leur ressenti et point de vue dans de pertinentes critiques de la pièce. 3

FRANÇAIS Les élèves de sixième et de cinquième participent à un concours de lecture, « Les Incorruptibles », qu’ils réalisent conjointement avec les élèves de CM2. Au fil de leurs lectures, ils conçoivent des jeux : anagrammes, mots croisés, rébus… qu’ils proposeront à leurs camarades lors d’une première rencontre qui aura lieu au mois d’avril. ENGLISH Our English Department counts two teachers; Ivana Bosnjak and Maria Chaparro. It supports students’ thinking skills through its bilingualism and EAL programmes. Our students make the most of their intellectual faculties which in turn, build their self-‐confidence in their abilities and assure progress. In order to support this process, Ms Bosnjak and Ms Chaparro challenging and engaging lessons provide students with opportunities for research and discussion on a variety of texts dealing with timeless human issues and concerns. 4

Students are thus exposed to both literary and non-‐literary texts that enable them to analyse and reflect upon how language is used at different times and for diverse purposes and audiences. Short stories, novels, and fairy tales share the floor with newspaper articles, essays, descriptive brochures and adverts that encourage students to establish connections and associate learning to other subjects, developing cross-‐curricular skills. Students are encouraged to use English throughout the lesson and follow from source texts studied so that their accuracy and range of vocabulary and grammar structures increase. Activities range from vocabulary memorisation (matching, repetition, copying, crossword puzzles) to answering specific questions on text’s content and features and evaluating author’s point of view and transmitted messages. Students are enthusiastic and enjoy our productive learning environment, applying their language learning to real life academic and social situations. Speaking of Ms Bosnjak, she wrote for you these few introductory words: Dear Students, Parents and Friends of EIFA, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as I have recently joined your community as an English and History/Geography teacher in the Senior School. My name is Ivana Bosnjak and last year, I moved to England from Australia after teaching History/Geography, English, Italian and Croatian for eight years. I love to travel, experience new cultures and cuisines, and learn new languages. I am very happy to be part of your community and look forward to helping your children develop their English skills and knowledge of the language. I also look forward to meeting you throughout the academic year and improving my French! 5

To say the least, our English classes have been busy! To end the previous half term and to tie in with Press Week, Year 8 students looked at newspaper articles -‐ types, features and their purpose. After analysing a number of examples, students were requested to choose a topic of interest, research, write and design an article. Here is Carla Filliat's newspaper. We hope you enjoy reading it! 6

The Year 10 English class has been reading and analysing the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Next week, we look forward to hearing their oral presentations on an aspect of 1930s life in Southern America. Music, cars and fashion are some topics that will be discussed. MATHÉMATIQUES Après-‐midi ensoleillée à la Dulwich Gallery le 13 janvier dernier à la découverte des œuvres énigmatiques de l’artiste hollandais Maurits Cornelis Escher rassemblées dans une très belle exposition. Les élèves sont désormais, plus que jamais, absorbés par la préparation de leurs travaux et présentations afin d’être fin prêts pour l’assemblée du 17 mars. 7

MÉTHODOLOGIE En secondaire, nous avons fait le choix pédagogique d’inscrire une heure de méthodologie par semaine à l’emploi du temps des collégiens. Parmi les thèmes traités depuis le début de l’année : « comment organiser son cartable en fonction de son emploi du temps », « planifier les devoirs », « bien comprendre les consignes », « apprendre sa leçon » et « faire une fiche de révision ». Les objectifs de ces séances sont clairs : que les élèves acquièrent une certaine autonomie et soient véritablement acteurs de la construction de leur savoir. En janvier et en février, les heures de méthodologie ont été consacrées à la technique de la recherche documentaire. A partir de sujets qui leur étaient complètements inconnus, les élèves ont appris à chercher des informations dans des ouvrages-‐papier, puis ont réalisé des diaporamas et enfin ont présenté leur travail à l’oral. En 6ème, Alexandre a travaillé autour de la mosaïque représentant la victoire d’Alexandre le Grand à Issos contre l’empereur perse Darius III en 333 avant J.C. Cette mosaïque est aujourd’hui conservée au musée archéologique de Naples. 8

En 5ème, Milan, Coline et Carla se sont penchés sur l’Annonciation de Fra Angelico, La Tour de Babel de Pieter Breughel l’ancien et L’école d’Athènes de Raphaël. En 3ème, les élèves ont réalisé une première bibliographie sur Berlin pendant la Guerre Froide ou sur la crise de Cuba. AGENDA “The mechanics of genius” Friday 11th March, all the Senior school students will go to the Science Museum to discover the amazing inventions of Leonardo da Vinci. Un beau moment d’échanges et d’ouverture en perspective ! Second event of the project « Maths & Art » Thursday 17th March, 8h45, the Senior School students will present their work about the enigmatic artist M.C. Escher to their classmates of Y5 and Y6 during an assembly. Concours Kangourou Affutez vos crayons et surtout vos neurones, jeudi 17 mars à 9h30, place à la compétition !
