Chaghig Arzoumanian a 27 ans, mais elle pourrait en avoir mille : en voix off, elle prend personnellement en charge le passé de sa famille, la sédimentation de prénoms, de récits, de trajets et de
photographies qui lui en a été transmis
par bribes , on-dit, anecdotes .
Sa généalogie arménienne, qui
prend des proportions mythiques, est réinscrite dans
les paysages d’aujourd’hui.
« Les ruines ont fusionné avec
la terre », entend-on de la plaine
d’Anatolie que ses grandsparents ont quitté enfants au
début du géno cide arménien.
Mais la cinéaste découvre d’autres exils
sous cet exil, plus anciens, dont elle incruste les
fantômes dans le présent – familles persécutées
pendant le sultanat au seizième siècle, enfants
épargnés en 1915 par la chance d’une circoncision médicale, tête coupée d’un époux découverte
par sa femme. Cette violence historique a pour
contrepoint l’éclat intime, chaleureusement familial, d’histoires plus récentes. L’abstraction topographique cède sous le récit familial, un homme
fabrique trois barques avec une orange; des fruits
poussent en sur-impression sur un champ stérile.
De l’Anatolie, l’exil a mené à Beyrouth, où
Chaghig Arzoumanian est née, mais une branche
de la famille a bifurqué au Caire, à Damas, Jaffa…
La carte devient tapisserie aux couleurs et aux
motifs multiples, changeants – une épopée tissée
de fils individuels. Chaghig Arzoumanian is 26,
but she could be a thousand years old; it is her
voice-over that we hear telling her family’s past
with its accumulation of first names, stories, journeys and photographs handed down to her in
snippets, through hearsay and anecdotes.
Her Armenian genealogy, which is of mythical
proportions, becomes re-inscribed in today’s landscapes. We learn that “the ruins have fused with
the land,” referring to the Anatolian plain that her
grandparents left in their childhood in the early

days of the Armenian genocide. Yet, beneath this
exile, the filmmaker discovers other even older
ones and she incrusts their ghosts onto present
times – families persecuted under a sixteenthcentury sultanate, children spared in 1915
thanks to a providential medical
circumcision, a husband’s severed
head discovered by his wife.
The only counterpoint to this
historical violence is the warmly
intimate vibrancy of more
recent stories. Topographical
abstraction gives way to a family
story; a man builds three ships out
of an orange and superimposed fruit
grow over a barren field. From Anatolia,
exile wends its way to Beirut, where Chaghig
Arzoumanian was born, but a family branch splits
off in Cairo, Damascus, Jaffa… The map turns
into a tapestry of many changing colours and
patterns – an epic woven together out of individual threads. (C.G.)
CHAGHIG ARZOUMANIAN est une réalisatrice et monteuse libanaise
née à Beyrouth en 1988. Diplômée de l’Université de Paris 8, elle
détient un double master en réalisation et en valorisation des
patrimoines cinématographiques. Elle a réalisé plusieurs courts
métrages et un moyen métrage : Au retour des marées (2012).

Geographies est son premier long métrage.
ARZOUMANIAN is a Lebanese filmmaker and film editor born
in Beirut in 1988. Graduate of University Paris 8, she holds
a double Masters in filmmaking and developing film heritage.
She has made several shorts and the medium-length film,
Au retour des marées (2012). Geographies is her first feature film
