SYNOPSIS (English):
“Volcano” is a monolog of not much more than thirty pages for an actress. Once more, Abel Neves
creates a complex personality, who is torn between strength and fragility. The break-up of the contact
with the outside world (“Valda” is locked up in her family’s house, her husband forbids her to go out
and, as the dogs, which he kills, she has a leash, which he uses to tie her up, when he goes out) is
originally for an almost schizophrenic speech. Indeed, Valda propose us different views of her life and
her condition as a woman and mother, multiplying the addresses: imaginary persons, her husband,
who was just killed by her, the public... The urgency to “tell everything” (the suffering and the
happiness, the hatred and the love), the need to denounce and finally the atrocities – “the
extermination” – carried out and justified by her husband, create a sort of very rhythmical vertigo of the
speech, a subtle, shooting story of life, which imposes a theatrical time of clarification and hindsight,
but never give up the dramatic part.
SYNOPSIS (français):
Il s’agit d’un monologue d’une petite trentaine de pages, pour une actrice. Abel Neves crée une fois de
plus un personnage complexe, tiraillé entre force et fragilité. La rupture de tout contact avec le monde
extérieur (« Valda » est enfermée dans la maison familiale, son mari lui interdit de sortir et, à l’image
des chiens qu’il tue, elle porte une laisse qu’il utilise pour l’attacher lorsqu’il sort) est à l’origine d’un
discours presque schizophrène. En effet, Valda nous propose différents points de vue sur sa vie, sa
condition de femme et de mère, en multipliant ses interlocuteurs : personnages imaginaires, son mari
qu’elle vient de tuer, le public… L’urgence de « tout dire » (la souffrance et le bonheur, la haine et
l’amour), le besoin de dénoncer, enfin, les atrocités – « l’extermination » - pratiquées et justifiées par
son mari, crée une sorte de vertige dans le rythme, un récit de vie lancinant qui impose un temps
d'éclaircissement et de recul, mais sans jamais renoncer à la part du dramatique.
