Junk Food in Japan
Fast-food companies have already been blamed (0) ……for…… the bad health of
kids across Europe and the US. Now (1) …they…….. are being criticized in Asia,
too. Japan’s fast-food industry (2) ……has been…….. very successful in the last
few years, and many people say this is causing major and unhealthy changes in (3)
………what…….. children eat. Japan is proud (4) ………of……….. its traditionally
healthy food which includes lots of fish and vegetables. But now, (5)
……many…….. kids are regularly eating burgers and sweets too. Tim Gill, from the
International Obesity Taskforce, believes the Japanese (6) …will………. soon be
facing serious health problems – like high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and
obesity. «You see the (7) ……worst …….. effects on health when there are quick
changes in lifestyles», Tim Gill told the British newspaper The Guardian. But little is
being done to stop this trend. (8) ……There …….. are no laws limiting junk-food ads
aimed at children, so fast-food companies continue to be successful.

Action Girl Jessica Alba
How cool would it be to be a superhero, a deep-sea diver and a dancer? Jessica
Alba has been all of these things – in films of course! She is fit, strong and powerful,
just like the heroes she plays! Jessica loves to play women who are strong and
dominant.
It's no wonder that Jessica has got the skills and body to play action roles. Her
mother was a lifeguard, so Jessica learned to swim before she could walk. Although
she hasn't won an Oscar yet, she has won an MTV movie award for her role in Sin
City. How does Jessica feel about her career? «It's not always easy», she says.
«Sometimes I don't have a choice, I have to take what is there». But Jessica won't
do just anything to be successful. She says, «I don't take my clothes off. Maybe I
won't get some roles, but I'm too scared».
Jessica was born in California. Because of her father's job her family had to move a
lot. «I went to 11 schools while I was growing up. I was always the new kid. I was a
loner and did my own thing». When Jessica was 12, she took her first acting
lessons. Nine months later, she started making commercials and was on TV series
like Flipper and The Secret World of Alex Mack. After Jessica finished school, she
studied acting in New York. Then she got a role in a TV show where she was the
star for two years before making her first big Hollywood films.

The people below all want to do an evening course.
On the right there are descriptions of eight evening courses.
Choose the most suitable course (A-H) for the following people (1-5) and write the
correct letter (A-H) into the box.

produce concert programmes for
her music club. But she thinks that
what she writes does not look
professional enough. She would
like to be able to present her work
better.
C
2. John didn’t enjoy literature at
school but now he loves it. He
would like to know more about
modern fiction and poetry. As he
has a long journey to work on the
train, he has plenty of time to read
every day.
D
3. Kathy would like to learn
something she can do at home as
she had a baby last year. She is
very good at practical things. She
used to work in a nursery and
hopes to return there when her
child is old enough.
H
4. Sue is a journalist. She loves
literature and is fond of writing.
She speaks English, Italian and
French fluently and also learnt
some Greek because she worked
in Greece for half a year.

can’t play a musical instrument,
although he would like to learn
one. He is also interested in
different styles of music and wants
to listen to more live music.

One of the most
valuable jobs in the
world is being a parent.
Yet few people are
prepared for this job.
This course is for new
or future parents and it
teaches all the practical
skills and knowledge to
be a good mother or
father to a pre-school
child.
C
Do you feel that you
are not getting the
most out of your
computer? In this
course we will show
you the more advanced
features of the main
writing programmes
available today. It will
enable you to produce
much more
professional and stylish
documents.
E

wish to know more, you

You will learn about
pop, classical and
international music.

opportunity to attend a
number of concerts,
too.

by a well-known poet.
Even if you have never
written before, you will
be producing work you
can be proud of at the
end of this course.
10
D
This course is about
literary appreciation. It
focuses on the 20th
century English novel
and you will discuss a
different novel each
week. Special sessions
will be taken by guest
authors who will
discuss how they write.
F
This course continues
last year’s popular
course on learning the
flute. The course
improves your existing
skills. It is given by a
talented musician and
excellent teacher. It will
end with a concert for
the public.
H

all the children you
know! Learn how to
make soft toys that are
better and much
cheaper than those you
buy in the shops.
Animals and dolls
