What is the George K. Clark Anniversary Bonspiel ? ---In 1979, as a member of the 25th Anniversary Committee in the curling club, George Clark proposed a mixed
bonspiel be held to celebrate the event. It was a first for the curling club in that all regular play was stopped
for a week and members from all sections were encouraged to play. Teams were drawn from a hat by the
leads and games began the next morning and continued throughout the week. It was a huge success and
set a precedent for future years. George Clark (Clark Travel) donated a “trip for two” each year and for
many years the theme of the Bonspiel was built around the trip’s destination. At its peak there were 40
teams competing in the Anniversary Bonspiel and 200 attending the dinner/dance.
The original trophy was a reproduction of a painting which depicted a curling match that took place on the
St. Lawrence River on February 17, 1855 (Note: when the trophy was lost in the fire of 2002, Wally Charron,
who donated the original trophy, replaced it).
George Clark continued to sponsor the event each year and it became one of the most popular events of the
curling season. George passed away in 1999. Out of respect to his memory and to honour his many
contributions to the success of the club, the name of the bonspiel was changed to the George K. Clark
Bonspiel in February 2000. Peter Harrison, President of Clark Travel today, has continued to sponsor the
bonspiel.
Retour sur le tournoi de 2008
L’an dernier le Tournoi Anniversaire George K. Clark (12 au 16 février 2008) a connu un franc succès. Un
total de 16 équipes ont participé à la compétition, et plus de 90 personnes ont assisté au souper dansant du
16 février. Afin de nous rafraîchir la mémoire, voici les gagnants du tournoi de 2008:

Les responsables des soupers du vendredi soir, Jack et Roberta Landerman, sont à la recherche
de volontaires pour aider à la préparation de repas TGIF. Les équipes du Mixte et du Ladder sont
tout particulièrement invitées à participer et plusieurs se sont manifestés pour les prochaines
semaines. Voici certaines dates où des membres organiseront les soupers TGIF:

repas TGIF et faire profiter les membres de leurs talents culinaires: 30 janvier, 20 mars, 27 mars,
17 avril. Surveillez les affiches au Club pour tous les détails et pour tout changement à l’horaire.

Un mariage? Un anniversaire? Une fête? Des retrouvailles familiales? Une réunion de
travail? Un meeting d’association? Chers membres, quelle que soit l’occasion, vous
pouvez louer à prix avantageux la salle du Club pour toutes sortes d’activités, et ce
même l’été (la salle est climatisée). Selon les circonstances, notre salle peut accueillir
de petits groupes ou jusqu’à une centaine de personnes. Le chalet possède une cuisine
bien équipée et notre bar peut accommoder vos besoins. Veuillez vous adresser au
gérant Don Whibley pour de plus amples informations.

Comité des nominations
Lors de l’assemblée générale semi-annuelle tenue en novembre, les personnes suivantes ont été
choisies pour former le comité des nominations, responsable de recruter et de recommander les
administrateurs pour la saison 2009-2010: Michel Sauvé (président du comité), Daniel Arcand, Judy
Cruchet, Steve Sharp, Jos Toth et François Vary.

FROM THE JUNIOR PROGRAM xxx

Over the Christmas holidays St.Lambert played host for three days to the U20 and U15 sections
of the Tim Caverly Christmas Bonspiel. A total of 49 junior teams from Quebec and Ontario
participated in this yearly three day event held at four Montreal area clubs. St.Lambert had three
teams entered in the event. Junior Coordinator David Glasspoole would like to thank our club
members that came out to volunteer and to support the event.

Congratulation to our junior boys elite team, Team Birrell, for winning the Elite section of the Tim
Caverly Christmas Bonspiel (that category of the bonspiel was played in Montreal West).

The 2009 Jeux de Quebec qualifications for the Rive Sud region will be held on Saturday
January 31st at the Mont Bruno Curling Club. The age limit for this event is 15. We have three
teams entered: one girls team, Team Hutton, and one boys team, Team Vaillancourt. The third
team is two of our St.Lambert girls teaming up with two girls from the Boucherville Curling Club,
Team Ferron. Good luck and fun to all of them.

Plus tôt ce mois-ci des représentants de Curling Québec sont venus au Club pour amorcer le
processus d’appariement de nos pierres de curling, en vertu du programme «Rock Talk». Par la
même occasion, Guy Hemmings, responsable du développement chez Curling Québec, a
apporté les chandails à être remis aux personnes ayant participé à la clinique de curling du 13
mars 2008. Ceux et celles qui ne l’auraient pas déjà fait peuvent obtenir leur chandail auprès du
gérant Don Whibley.

The Evening Curlers section held its annual invitational bonspiel on January 17 under the theme Astrological
Signs. The event was a real success. Here are the results:
• Two-game high winner: from Longue-Pointe, with 45 points, Sylvie Turgeon (skip), Louise Pelletier (3rd),

• Two-game high runner-up: from Valleyfield, with 38.5 points, Hélène Pelchat (skip), Diane Lemieux (3rd),

• One-game high winner (after discounting the above two-game leaders): from Laval, with 20.5 points,

Championnats provinciaux 2009
C’est la saison des championnats provinciaux et des membres de notre Club ont participé à ces
compétitions. Deux membres juniors ont participé au Championnat junior à Chicoutimi (3 au 9 janvier). Il
s’agit de Britanny Connell et David Godin. Britanny jouait avec l’équipe de la skip Kelly Gazdewich, aux
couleurs du club Longue-Pointe. Quant à David, il évoluait pour le quatuor représentant la région de Québec
(Club Jacques-Cartier) du capitaine Pierre-Luc Morissette. D’autre part, dans le cadre du Championnat
féminin du Québec à Trois-Rivières (18 au 25 janvier), Lucie Roy a fait équipe avec la capitaine Johanne
Tremblay, dont le quatuor évoluait sous les noms combinés des clubs Lachine/Trois-Rivières/St-Lambert.
En vue du Championnat senior masculin, les qualifications visant à choisir les représentants de la région de
Montréal se déroulent du 21 janvier au 1er février. Trente équipes tentent leur chance pour obtenir une des
places disponibles lors du Championnat provincial. Deux équipes de notre Club se sont inscrites à ces
qualifications régionales. Il s’agit des équipes de Marc-André Bouchard (avec Daniel Fontaine, Serge
Campeau et Jacques Rochon) et de Gaétan Beaudoin (avec Tony Greene, Serge Brazeau et Dave Sharp).

SENIORS - TROPHÉE MAURICE ROBERT
La ligue du samedi matin (8 équipes) a terminé sa première ronde. Les rencontres se sont
déroulées du 8 novembre au 3 janvier. Le trophée Maurice Robert, accordé aux gagnants de
cette première ronde, a été remporté par l’équipe formée de Michel Rousseau, Bernard
Beauchamp, Réal Duclos et André Lavigne.

Ladder – Le Ladder a entrepris sa troisième ronde le 19 janvier. Cette ronde se termine le 24
février (avec pause les 9 et 10 février pour la tenue du Bonspiel Anniversaire). À noter que la
section “D” compte maintenant 6 équipes avec l’ajout d’un quatuor formé de Wendy Klacko,
Lucie Roy, Antoine Couture et Pierre Petit.
Seniors – La ligue du samedi matin a amorcé sa deuxième ronde le 10 janvier. Cette ronde
se termine le 28 février.
Dames du soir - La section tient sa compétition de doubles (10 équipes) les 7, 14, 21 et 28
janvier.
LADDER – RÉSULTATS DE LA DEUXIÈME RONDE (1er décembre 2008 – 12 janvier 2009)

LIGUE DU JEUDI SOIR
La première ronde de la Ligue du jeudi soir, amorcée le 6 novembre, s’est terminée le 22 janvier.
Éric Korn est le grand gagnant de la ronde (avec un dossier de 7 victoires et 1 nulle). Dominique
Carbonneau et Steve Shee ont terminé ex-aequo au deuxième rang (dossier de 7 victoires).
Félicitation à tous. Un total de 32 joueurs ont participé à cette première ronde. La deuxième
ronde de la Ligue se met en branle le 29 janvier.
THOSE SENIORS AND THEIR MAGIC STICK !!!
The Seniors’ «Extender» Competition (4 teams) took place in December and early
January. The winning team was made up of Harvey Carter, Ray Leclerc, André
Lavigne and Bob Smiley. Finalists were Al Lambert, Dick Rylander, Mickey
MacFarlane and Don Helleur.
NOUVEAUX MEMBRES - Le Club compte de nouveaux membres réguliers depuis le dernier

CRIBBAGE
Organizers Ray Leclerc and Gord Price wish to thank all those who support our Cribbage
Tournaments, held on many Wednesdays. There was a good attendance on January 14
(28 players) and January 21 (30 players). So far this season, 41 different people
participated. Last season a surplus of $150 from the tournaments was given to the Seniors
Section. The top 6 leaders so far this season are: Lauretta Gallant, Bernard Beauchamp,
Ritchie MacPherson, Norm Chartrand, Don Thayer and MacMorrison. Next tournament: is
Wednesday January 28, 2:00 pm.

Lions Club – Brunch – Sunday 8 February
The Lions Club will hold a brunch at the Club on Sunday 8 February (9 AM – 1 PM)
to benefit local charities. Tickets are $8.00 (children aged under 4 are admitted
free). Tickets available at the Club, at Zodiac (Victoria Ave.) or via St. Lambert Lions
(450-678-3492).
BAGPIPE MUSIC AND KILTS : the 78th Fraser Highlanders visit our Club
Since there is no outdoor curling this winter at the Fort on St. Helen’s Island, the 78th Fraser Highlanders (a
group perpetuating military heritage at the Fort along with La Compagnie Franche de la Marine) held its

annual curling afternoon at our Club on Saturday, January 24 . Club member HLCol Okill Stuart, a patron
of the regiment, kindly agreed to be the host for the event. After an afternoon of friendly curling, participants
enjoyed a soldiers / country style buffet dinner of hearty soup, salad, ham & tourtière and dessert. Members
of our Club were most welcome to join in and some participated in the event.
