And at Symphony Space on Friday evening, she performed most of her remarkable new album, “The 9 Secrets,” for which she set lyrics by the Brazilian author Paulo Coelho to original music. A song cycle based on his novel “Manuscript Found in Accra,” it is an auspicious collaboration. Ms. Lemper, 52, is a kindred spirit to Mr. Coelho, 68, whose searching philosophical reflections on human existence have the solemnity of sacred texts and offer spiritual guidance without reference to a deity. Ms. Lemper has devoted increasing effort in recent years to using songs to address injustice and political strife. Mr. Coelho does a less specific version of the same thing in lyrics that evoke universal truths. On “The 9 Secrets,” titles like “Solitude,” “Beauty,” “Movement,” “Sex” and “Love” have a cosmic resonance intensified by Ms. Lemper’s sinuous droning melodies and chameleonic voice. That voice is an acquired taste. It can rise to a piercing feline cry or subside to a seductive murmur. But in any language, her tone is imperious, her timbre metallic. Her international repertoire has steadily widened from German cabaret and theater music to encompass Middle Eastern, Indian and South American styles, VXU www.accesconcert.com which she swirled together in a concert with a humanitarian agenda. Mr. Coelho’s lyrics on the record are metaphysical, apolitical and compassionate. In the song “Change,” he writes, “I wish I was like the wind/For no one knows where it comes from/And it changes direction without having to explain why.” It is one of the strongest lyrics on “The 9 Secrets,” a suite of reveries whose subject is nothing less than the totality of experience, contemplated from the distanced perspective of a literary prophet who takes the long view of existence. Accompanying Ms. Lemper was a sextet playing arrangements that traversed international styles without settling into one place. The musicians included Henri Agnel on Arabic guitars, Idriss Agnel on percussion, Philippe Botta on Arabic flutes and saxophones, Gil Goldstein on accordion, Vana Gierig on piano, and Romain Lecuyer on bass. Depending on the instrumentation, the music seemed to move from place to place. Ms. Lemper danced a little, as well as sang in front of a shifting cinematic backdrop by Volker Schlöndorff that focused on ancient ruins in Middle Eastern landscapes. The evening’s most compelling moment was her rendition of the French songwriter Leo Ferre’s “Avec le temps,” an anguished lament about the ultimate disappearance of everything. It brought Ms. Lemper and this critic to the brink of tears. $YHUVLRQRIWKLVUHYLHZDSSHDUVLQSULQWRQ0D\RQSDJH&RIWKH1HZ<RUNHGLWLRQZLWK WKHKHDGOLQH7UXWKVLQD&ROODERUDWLRQ%RWK/LWHUDU\DQG0XVLFDO
