Techniques de réadaptation, a unique two‐year program offered at CCNB‐Campus de Campbellton, is the only Francophone program of its kind in Canada. It is designed to train rehab assistants in four disciplines: occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech‐language pathology and audiology. The program began in 2007, and accepts 20 students every second year. Our third cohort will graduate in June 2013. The program complies with the competency profile developed by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and is a candidate for national accreditation. (www.otapta.ca) The physiotherapy component is taught by certified physiotherapists with many years of clinical experience. A laboratory assistant takes part in practical instruction. Students are well supervised in their learning experiences. Our premises are equipped with modern devices adapted to current practice needs. CCNB students in the Techniques de réadaptation program complete 750 hours of clinical field work. Placements are province‐wide in a variety of clinical settings, such as hospitals, rehab centres, private clinics, schools, and other community environments. New Brunswick offers services in English and French and is the only officially bilingual province in Canada. The Campbellton campus is located in northern New Brunswick, beside beautiful Chaleur Bay, near the Quebec border. Training is given in a pleasant environment and a positive atmosphere where learning is important but there is a balance with student life. The CCNB is a college corporation focused on its student population with an open world view. It contributes to the development of individuals and Acadian and Francophone society by offering over 95 technical and vocational training programs on its five campuses to meet labour market needs. In 2011‐2012, the CCNB had over 8,000 students in its regular programs and continuing education with a placement rate of 85% in the year following graduation. Innovative and entrepreneurial, it adapts to socioeconomic conditions, supports applied research activities, and encourages innovation. Join the NPAA Administrative Assembly PTA Regional Representative positions available The National Physiotherapist Assistant Assembly (NPAA) has openings for “Regional Representative” positions within the Administrative Assembly (executive) of the NPAA. We are extending the deadline for application to Friday, March 22, 2013.
The NPAA is inviting our members to apply for these volunteer roles. These openings are a great opportunity to shape the future of physiotherapist assistants’ practice in Canada, as well as to develop leadership skills within our profession. Our regional representatives develop new skills in governance, communications, member services, and more. Both seasoned PTAs and brand new PTAs are welcome to apply. The Administrative Assembly of the NPAA meets by teleconference bimonthly. We are active throughout the year on various PTA related activities and promotions. For example, we network with schools offering PTA programs, raise the profile of PTAs within our own communities, and are especially keen with our endeavors to source out continuing education for our colleagues from coast to coast. Our Regional Representatives have also provided input into the revision of the Essential Competency Profile for Physiotherapist Assistants in Canada, and into the development of the PTA Observed Performance Criteria process. Let’s unite and advance our profession by becoming involved. If you are interested and would like to apply, please submit a letter to [email protected] expressing your interest before March 22, 2013. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Warm regards, Sandra Lamb, President National Physiotherapist Assistant Assembly Profiling a CPA Division ‐ Seniors' Health The Seniors’ Health Division (SHD) is a special interest group within the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA). SHD is committed to providing members with services related to building excellence in older adult health and physiotherapy practice. SHD is comprised of physiotherapists, physiotherapist assistants and students from across Canada who work with older adults in a variety of practice settings, including acute geriatric care, geriatric rehabilitation units, long term care settings, community based and home care settings. In reality, with Canada's demographic shift and aging population, physiotherapy practice in nearly every area will be involved in working predominantly with older adult patients/clients. As an important component of the physiotherapy community, the SHD is eager to network and liaise with our CPA member physiotherapy assistant colleagues. Physiotherapist assistants are an integral part of service provision in many areas of the health care system where care is provided to older adults. Understanding issues such as frailty, osteoporosis, effects of being on multiple medications (polypharmacy), falls, and cognitive changes such as dementia, depression and delirium are important for all health care providers. As the SHD moves forward in developing continuing education in the area of physiotherapy in seniors health, the education needs of our physiotherapy assistants are also important. SHD is a member of The International Association of Physical Therapists working with Older Persons (IPTOP) which is a component of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT). Our Mission The Seniors’ Health Division is committed to providing innovation and leadership by promoting physiotherapy for older adults in Canada. The Division fosters collaboration among health professionals, seniors, families, and communities to achieve healthy aging. Objectives 1. To unite CPA members who are interested in all aspects of seniors’ health and well‐being 2. To acquire and make available information and educational materials as related to physiotherapy in the field of seniors' health 3. To encourage the development and publication of physiotherapy research in the field of seniors' health in Canada and elsewhere 4. To collaborate with CPA on issues of national importance which relate to seniors’ health. 5. To promote excellence in rehabilitation of the older adult 6. To support initiatives that promote healthy aging To become a member of the Seniors’ Health Division (SHD) you need to be a member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
