> Quand le coeur va, tout va! When the heart is well, all is well! aller to go que that avoir besoin de, avoir envie de to need, to feel like Voici l'enregistrement d'une conversation entre une mère et sa fille le soir, à la maison, après une journée de travail. Here's a recording of a conversation between a mother and her daughter in the evening, at the house, after a day of work. La mère: Comment ça va? Bonne journée aujourd'hui? The mother: How are you? Good day today? Non, I'm not very well today. Things aren't great, all's not well. Qu'est-ce qui se passe? Des problèmes? What's up? Problems? Oui... non... Je veux dire... oui, je suis fatiguée. J'ai très mal à la tête. C'est une migraine. Je veux me reposer. Je veux rester tranquille. Laisse-moi tranquille! Yes... no... I mean to say... yes, I am tired. I've a very bad headache. It's a migraine. I want to rest. I want a bit of peace. Leave me in peace! Ah well, so then, you're not going to your friends this evening? And yet you've been invited, haven't you? Non, je n'y vais pas. En plus, ils vont au restaurant, alors... No, I'm not going there. What's more, they're going to the restaurant, so... Allez! But you can go to the restaurant, you as well, if you want. Go on, it changes your ideas to go out a bit in the evening after a day of work. It's true, it will do you good. Go on! No, I don't feel like going out. I really need to rest, I tell you. Tu es sûre que tout va bien? Tu es sûre que tu n'as pas autre chose? Une peine de coeur par exemple? Are you sure that you are OK? You're sure that you haven't got something else? A heartache for example? Mais non, puisque je te dis que c'est la tête, c'est pas le coeur, c'est la tête, na! But no, as I'm telling you it's my head, not my heart, it's my head, so there! Ah well, then, it's not serious. Because when the heart is well, everything is well! Oh toi! Oh you! You're always the same, you don't change. You're an incorrigible romantic. ...en trois points The lesson in three points 1) Le verbe aller - to go After être and avoir, which you have already come across, aller is the third key verb in French. It means 'to go'. Here is its conjugation: aller- to go le présent de l'indicatif je vais nous allons tu vas vous allez il va ils vont elle va elles vont Remember the v (vais, vas, va, vont) - like v for voyage (or v for vite, which means 'quickly'). Je vais vite. I go quickly. Tu vas dans le centre en bus. You go to the centre by bus. He goes to work on Mondays and Tuesdays. She doesn't go to school, she is too small. In general we go to the restaurant on Saturday evenings. Vous allez bien? Are you well? They go clubbing (in a night club). They don't go to Paris by train, they go there by plane, the plane goes quicker. Pay attention not to confuse: ils vont (aller) they go with: ils sont (être) they are ils ont (avoir) they have Remember too the special use of aller to say 'how things are going': Tout va bien? Everything's going OK? Oui, ça va pas mal, merci. Yes, things are not too bad, thanks. Comment ça va aujourd'hui? How's it going today? She has a headache, she's not well today. (lit: she's going badly) Et vous, ça va, vous? Vous allez bien? And you, how's it going for you? Are you doing alright? Ça va bien. Fine. (lit: it's going well) 2) Que - that When a sentence has two clauses in it, each with its own separate verb and subject, you need to use the conjunction que to introduce the second clause. Je suis sûre que tout va bien. could be translated in English as either I am sure that everything is fine. or I am sure everything is fine. But in French the conjunction que is obligatory. You can't leave it out as you can the 'that' in English. Je pense que c'est possible. I think it's possible. Je suis sûr que c'est possible. I am sure it's possible. The que is also obligatory in: Elle veut que les enfants mangent de la soupe le soir mais ils détestent ça. where in English we would use a direct construction: She wants (that) the children to eat soup in the evening but they hate that. We know very well that the bus number 4 doesn't go to the town centre, it's the 3. 3) Avoir envie de, avoir besoin de When you want to speak of 'wants' or 'needs', you need to use the expressions envie de, besoin de. They can be followed by a verb: J'ai envie de me reposer. I feel like resting. J'ai besoin de me reposer. I need to rest. or by a noun: J'ai envie d'un café. I feel like a coffee. J'ai besoin d'un verre d'eau. I need a glass of water. Note the presence of the de after envie and besoin. L'envie and le besoin are both nouns: l'envie - desire le besoin - need So a more literal translation of the French way of speaking would be: I have desire of rest. I have need of rest. Does the director need the dossier? The client needs more precise information. Ouf! I don't need my telephone today. Phew! J'ai envie de prendre l'air. I feel like taking some air. He feels like sleeping early to be on form tomorrow morning. I feel like living in France and going on holidays abroad from time to time.
