Before testing the electrode, condition the glass membrane in water. Allow a small amount of electrolyte to flow out by shortly pressing on the head of the sensor. The electrode test for the Solvotrode easyClean can be performed using the 780/781 pH/Ion Meter or a Titrando with Touch Control (version 5.0 or higher). Select the electrode type "nonaqueous". These test specifications include an electrode test according to ASTM D 664. To check the Solvotrode easyClean according to ASTM D 664 is also possible with another meter. 8.109.8017ML Measure the potential difference (U/mV mode on your pH Meter) between two buffer solutions of pH 4 and pH 7. The difference must be at least 150 mV at 25 °C. If the difference is smaller, the electrode must be returned immediately for warranty clarification. Storage Immerse the electrode including the ground joint diaphragm (2) in the same electrolyte solution which is used as reference electrolyte and close the refill opening (1). Never allow electrodes to dry up. Measurement Remove the plug (1) and, if necessary, refill reference electrolyte up to the refill opening. Keep the opening open during the measurement. Before or between titration series, store the electrode in distilled water or rinse it with distilled water. Electrolyte solutions The Solvotrode is delivered with c(LiCl) = sat. in ethanol as reference electrolyte. However, in certain situations (especially for pH values >16), other electrolyte solutions are more suitable. For alkaline titrants, we recommend c(TEABr) = 0.4 mol/L in ethylene glycol (TEABr = tetraethylammonium bromide). For acidic titrants, we recommend c(LiCl) = 2 mol/L in ethanol. Electrolyte Order no. c(LiCl) = sat. in EtOH Ask your Metrohm representative c(LiCl) = 2 mol/L in EtOH Ask your Metrohm representative c(TEABr) = 0.4 mol/L in ethylene glycol 6.2320.000 Maintenance To change the electrolyte solution, the electrode can simply be emptied by pressing on the head of the electrode. Rinse the inner electrode body thoroughly with the new electrolyte and fill the electrode with this solution up to the refill opening. Store the electrode over night in this solu- tion. Afterwards, the Solvotrode easyClean can be used as usual. Note ■ ■ The solvotrode easyClean must not be filled with LiClO4 in glacial acetic acid! This electrolyte affects the electrode head and causes a short circuit. Do not treat the electrode in ultrasonic baths! Further information on this topic and titration conditions can be found in our monograph "Nonaqueous titration of acids and bases using potentiometric endpoint indication". Troubleshooting Sluggish response: Place the electrode in distilled water between titrations the way that the membrane, but not the diaphragm are located in the water. The gel layer of the membrane will be recovered and the response time of the electrode will therefore re-improve. Contamination of the sleeve diaphragm: By pressing on the head of the electrode, a certain amount of reference electrolyte flows out and the diaphragm is rinsed. The corresponding amount of electrolyte solution has to be refilled. This procedure is to be carried out regularly. This ensures a proper electrolyte outflow during the measurement. When contaminated with oil products, rinse the electrode thoroughly with a suitable solvent between the measurements and before storage. Afterwards rinse the sensor with ethanol and then with water. 2/2
