THE MAURITIUS TURF CLUB CHAMP DE MARS – PORT LOUIS INTERIM REPORT – SATURDAY 3 DECEMBER 2016 RACE 1 – THE FENECE ASSET MANAGEMENT CUP Roy’s Express threw its head on jumping and raced wide without cover in the early stages. Chap Trap jumped awkwardly and shifted ground, crowding Colour Of Courage onto Ruby Rocker. Ruby Rocker then raced in restricted room for some distance and was eased to secure a position closer to the rails. From approaching the 1200 metres Chap Trap was inconvenienced on the inside of Colour Of Courage for some distance. When questioned, jockey Chouhan (Colour Of Courage) explained that approaching the 1200 metres his mount started to over-race and he was unable to restrain it, as such he improved on the inside of Seven Carat, resulting in Chap Trap racing in restricted room for some distance. Jockey Levey explained that Chap Trap, which was having its first run in Mauritius, was racing green at that moment and lay out and, as such, made things harder for him. Jockey Chouhan (Colour Of Courage) was told to exercise care. Approaching the 1200 metres Roy’s Express was steadied and taken in to secure the position one off the fence behind Seven Carat. Approaching the 450 metres Ruby Rocker shifted out momentarily, bumping Right To Tango. From approaching the 300 metres Right To Tango was taken out from behind Blue Jeans to improve its position and raced wide rounding the home turn. From leaving the 200 metres Roy’s Express hung in and near the 150 metres, shied away and shifted in when Blue Jeans improved on its outside, inconveniencing Seven Carat, which was giving ground. Leaving the 100 metres Chap Trap shifted in away from the whip, slightly inconveniencing Ruby Rocker, which was giving ground. Over the concluding stages Fyrkat ran out of galloping room and could not be tested. RACE 2 – THE DYNAVENA CUP After being boxed Powder Keg became fractious, reared and flipped over. It was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and declared unfit to race. Acting on veterinary advice, the Stewards ordered its withdrawal. In view of this, all bets on Powder Keg were ordered to be refunded and winning bets with bookmakers were paid less 5 cents per rupee, the average price of Powder Keg being 19-1. Anafesto, which was standing next to Powder Keg in the gates, was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and declared fit to run. Following the running of the race, the Stewards sounded the inquiry sign and viewed the video replays of the start. It was established that when the start was effected Blizzard Of Ozz, which was standing still in its gate, refused to jump and stood flat-footed. The Stewards, being of the opinion that Blizzard Of Ozz was in a position to jump with the rest of the field, decided not to proceed further. Vintage Angel jumped awkwardly, shifted outwards contacting Anafesto. Blizzard Of Ozz raced wide from the 450 metres. Leaving the 200 metres Vintage Angel was taken out from behind Political Power, which had shifted out. RACE 3 –THE MARA DELTA INTERNATIONAL CUP Emaar was slow to begin. Carson City was slow into stride. From leaving the 1500 metres Viento Magico raced fiercely and, when being settled, threw its head and raced ungenerously for some distance. Leaving the 1300 metres Viento Magico was taken out when awkward close to the heels of Brave Leader and raced wide from then onwards. Supreme Power jumped the crossing at the 450 metres. Saarikh raced wide from the 400 metres. Emblem Royale hung in in the early stages of the home straight with jockey Mendizabal switching his whip to his right hand and hung out over the concluding stages. RACE 4 – THE MARA DELTA PROPERTY HOLDINGS CUP Acting on veterinary advice that Max The Man was lame on the near fore leg, the Stewards ordered its withdrawal at 2.10 p.m. today. In view of this, all bets on Max The Man were ordered to be refunded and winning bets with bookmakers were paid less 3 cents per rupee, the average price of Max The Man being 27-1. Spirit Of Dover proved difficult to control whilst cantering down to the start and brushed the wall at the 1600 metres. It was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon behind the stalls and found to be lame on the near hind leg. Acting on veterinary advice, the Stewards ordered its withdrawal. In view of this, all bets on Spirit Of Dover were ordered to be refunded and winning bets with bookmakers were paid less 5 cents per rupee, the average price of Spirit Of Dover being 19-1, thus a total of 8 cents per rupee. Dawn Raid and Seven Oceans were slow to begin. Chester’s Wish jumped awkwardly and shifted out, inconveniencing Seven Oceans. Rumbullion was slow into stride. Dawn Raid over-raced in the early stages and threw its head when being settled. Schachar shifted out rounding the home turn, carrying Suzie’s Arrow outwards. Rumbullion, which was following, was inconvenienced and also had to be taken out. Rumbullion was then taken back in to continue going forward. Seven Oceans hung in in the home straight and near the 100 metres had to be taken out to avoid the heels of Dawn Raid. Leaving the 100 metres Chester’s Wish hung in under pressure. Schachar hung out over the concluding stages with jockey Chouhan switching his whip to his left hand. Rumbullion, which was following, was slightly inconvenienced and had to be taken in to continue going forward. The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Rumbullion was lame on the near fore leg RACE 5 – THE AIR MAURITIUS HOLIDAYS CUP Beluga was slow to begin. Lake Geneva shifted out shortly after the start, brushing Five Star Rock on its hindquarter with the latter becoming unbalanced. Lake Geneva was then eased and taken in to secure a position closer to the rails. Forward Drive and Five Star Rock raced wide throughout. From leaving the 1200 metres Beluga commenced to over-race and became awkward close to the heels of Evergreen. Leaving the 200 metres Forward Drive shifted out under pressure, slightly inconveniencing Five Star Rock, which was giving ground. RACE 6 – THE ZILWA ATTITUDE CUP Candy Rock shifted in shortly after the start, crowding Bandido Caballero onto Storm Dancer. Trackmaster raced wide in the early stages. Top Jet raced wide in the early and middle stages and approaching the 1300 metres was eased to secure a position closer to the rails. Red Rain, which was following, became inconvenienced when close to its heels and was taken in and, in doing so, momentarily tightened Bandido Caballero on its inside. Leaving the 450 metres Top Jet was taken out from behind Super Glue to improve its position and raced wide from then onwards. Storm Dancer commenced to give ground from approaching the 400 metres, resulting in Candy Rock, which was following, being taken out to continue going forward. When being taken out, Candy Rock carried Bandido Caballero outwards with Bandido Caballero carrying Red Rain wider on the track. Red Rain then raced wide rounding the home turn. RACE 7 – THE JEAN HALBWACHS CHALLENGE TROPHY Dark Liability was slow to begin. Shortly after the start Melson and Tigre Libre were taken across to race behind runners. Approaching the 1300 metres Canadian Dollar, when being restrained, threw its head and raced ungenerously for some distance. When questioned, jockey Harley (Canadian Dollar) explained that he was instructed to endeavour to find the rails, however as he could not secure a position on the rails and seeing that Sacred Jewel was improving on his outside and endeavouring to come in to secure the position behind Avail, he decided to bring his mount back. He added that in doing so Canadian Dollar, which was racing fiercely, threw its head and raced ungenerously. Approaching the 1200 metres Dark Liability momentarily raced tight on the inside of Sacred Jewel. Jockey Chouhan (Sacred Jewel) was shown the video replays of this incident, reprimanded and told to make sure he is clear of horses before shifting ground. Melson raced wide from approaching the 450 metres. Approaching the 400 metres Avail was taken out from behind Data Controller to improve its position and raced wide from then onwards. Al Firenze hung in in the home straight.
