INTERIM REPORT – SATURDAY 22 OCTOBER 2016
RACE 1 – THE SIR GAETAN DUVAL Q.C. CUP
Battle Ready was slow to begin. In the Frame jumped awkwardly and shifted in, crowding The Blue Streak
onto Battle Ready. From its wide draw Vigilante was taken across to race behind runners. Approaching the
1500 metres The Blue Streak was inconvenienced and had to be steadied when awkward close to the heels of
Battle Ready, which had been taken out. Apprentice Louis (Battle Ready) was shown the video replays of the
incident and told that he should make sure he is well clear of horses before shifting ground. Battle Ready raced
wide from the 1200 metres and leaving the 1000 metres was taken out wide on the track by Dunraven, which
was taken out from behind No Prisoners to improve its position. Apprentice Louis (Battle Ready) was shown
the video replays of the incident, reprimanded and told that in future he should race closer to horses on his
inside when in a position to do so. Leaving the 450 metres Alberts Day was taken out from behind Obligation
to improve its position and, in doing so, carried In the Frame wider on the track. Dunraven was taken out
approaching the 300 metres to improve its position and raced wide rounding the home turn. Approaching the
200 metres The Blue Streak was taken out from behind Black Gambit to secure clear running and for some
distance near the 150 metres had to be taken out from behind Black Gambit to secure clear running.
Approaching the 100 metres, over some distance, Black Gambit was taken out from behind Obligation and
Alberts Day to secure clear running. The Blue Streak, which was following, also had to be taken out to
continue going forward. Obligation lay in in the early stages of the home straight. When questioned, jockey
Emamdee said that due to its wide draw, he was instructed to drop Vigilante at the rear of the field and
endeavour to improve his position as from the 400 metres. He explained that from leaving the 1100 metres this
gelding got its tongue over the bit and lost interest in the race. He added that passing the 900 metres despite
his urgings Vigilante failed to respond and kept losing ground on the rest of the field, resulting in him using his
whip on the latter leaving the 700 metres. He further added that this gelding sweated profusely, which might
have accounted for its poor run. The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that No Prisoners was not striding out
properly after the race.
RACE 2 – THE TRESOR DE LA BUSE CUP
Acting on veterinary advice that Jiggery Pokery was unfit to race, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal at 3.30
p.m. on Friday. In view of this, all bets on Jiggery Pokery were ordered to be refunded and betting with
bookmakers was re-opened.
Shoddy Nick threw its head on jumping and shifted out, crowding After Midnight onto Kentucky Bluegrass.
Vintage Angel was slow to begin. From its wide draw Mount Fuji raced wide without cover in the early stages.
Leaving the 1365 metres After Midnight was cramped for room by Freedom, which was being taken in to
obtain a position closer to the rails and had to be checked, losing its position. At an inquiry into this incident,
jockey Holland (Freedom) pleaded guilty to a charge under MTC Rule 160 A (e) for careless riding and was
suspended from riding in races for one Mauritian race meeting. After Midnight came off the crossing at the
1300 metres awkwardly. After Midnight raced wide throughout. Approaching the crossing at the 800 metres
Mojo G hesitated. From leaving the 400 metres After Midnight commenced to give ground with jockey
Bardottier putting his hands down near the 150 metres. Jockey Bardottier (After Midnight) was shown the
video replays of the home straight and told to endeavour to ride his mounts out to the finish.
An inquiry was held into the handling of Vintage Angel. Trainer Jones explained that he instructed jockey
Bhaugeerothee to endeavour to secure a forward position even in a one off position but if the gelding was slow,
to settle it at the back of the field and ride for luck. Jockey Bhaugeerothee confirmed these instructions and
explained that after jumping moderately, he elected to settle the gelding at the back of the field and entering the
home straight, seeing that there was no room to him to improve in the middle of the track, he had to take this
gelding to the inside to secure clear running. He added that from then onwards he rode his mount forward but
was apprehensive in using his whip as, in his opinion, the horse would shift out. After consideration, jockey
Bhaugeerothee was found guilty of a charge under MTC Rule 160 A (a) in that he failed to take all reasonable
and permissible measures to ensure that Vintage Angel was given full opportunity to obtain the best place in
the field, the particulars being that after having secured clear running passing the 200 metres, he failed to ride
his mount with his usual vigour and determination when it was reasonable and permissible for him to do so in
the circumstances. He was suspended from riding in races for four Mauritian race meetings and fined
Rs.25,000.
The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Shoddy Nick suffered a bleeding attack.
RACE 3 – THE TAKAMAKA CUP
Acting on veterinary advice that Ferdnand The Bull was lame, the Stewards ordered its withdrawal at 8 a.m. on
Friday. In view of this, all bets on Ferdnand The Bull were ordered to be refunded and betting with
bookmakers was re-opened. With the withdrawal of Ferdnand The Bull, Emergency Acceptor Ready For Take
Off became a runner and was ridden by jockey Bussunt.
The start was delayed when Apple Pie proved difficult to load. After being boxed Apple Pie became fractious,
it was removed from its stall, inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and declared unfit to race. Acting on
veterinary advice that Apple Pie had an abdominal injury, the Stewards ordered its withdrawal. In view of this,
all bets on Apple Pie were ordered to be refunded and winning bets with bookmakers were paid less 20 cents
per rupee, the average price of Apple Pie being 4-1. Trainer Ramapatee Gujadhur was told that Apple Pie will
need to pass a barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before being allowed to race again.
Once being boxed What’s News kicked the back of its gate; it was removed from its stall, inspected by the
Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to race.
Antwerp jumped awkwardly, stumbled and was then taken across to race behind runners. What’s News threw
its head and raced ungenerously in the early stages. Schachar raced wide throughout. Passing the 400 metres

momentarily raced tight on the inside of Parker, which had shifted in despite jockey Sooful’s attempt to
straighten it. Parker hung in approaching the 400 metres. Passing the 300 metres Jay Jay’s Wild was taken
out from behind No Resistance to improve its position, carrying Parker wider on the track. Approaching the
200 metres New Star was taken to the outside of Kruger Rand to secure clear running and approaching the
100 metres was taken to the inside of Jay Jay’s Wild to continue going forward. Approaching the 100 metres
The Big Easy commenced to shift out, resulting in jockey Mansour shifting his whip to his left hand. Jockey
Mansour (The Big Easy) was shown the video replays of the home straight, told to straighten his mounts earlier
than he did on this occasion and that he should ride all his mounts out to the finish.
RACE 5 – THE PITON DE LA FOURNAISE CUP
Jambamman jumped awkwardly and shifted out, bumping Chosen Dash. Shortly after jumping, Forward
Drive was cramped for room between Kimberly Al and Wieland, which had jumped outwards and inwards
respectively. Evergreen and Lake Geneva raced wide in the early stages. From leaving the 1000 metres
Kimberly Al commenced to over-race and, when being settled, threw its head and raced ungenerously for
some distance. Leaving the 450 metres Kimberly Al was taken out from behind Wieland to improve its position
and raced wide from then onwards. Leaving the 200 metres Chosen Dash shifted in under pressure and had to
be taken out from behind Step To Fame to continue going forward. The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported

commenced to give ground, resulting in Maestro’s Salute, which was following, being taken out from behind it
to continue going forward and, in doing so, carried Jolie Roger wider on the track. When questioned, jockey
Winks (The Tripster) explained that he was instructed to endeavour to lead and that compared to its last races,
he managed to secure the lead quite easily without doing much effort. He added that from leaving the 1000
metres his mount commenced to race fiercely and despite his attempts to settle the gelding, the latter did not
respond. He also said that in his opinion the side winkers will need to be removed in an attempt to get The
Tripster to settle in its races. When questioned jockey Ghunowa explained that when asked for an effort
approaching the 400 metres Zhan Hu failed to quicken and made a breathing noise, as such he did not
persevere with the latter. A subsequent veterinary examination of Zhan Hu revealed no abnormality. The Club’s
Veterinary Surgeon reported that Soweto Slew was lame on the off fore leg.
RACE 7 – THE GOLDEN MAFATE CUP
Emaar and Ocean Hunter were slow to begin. Leaving the 1300 metres Ritmo Total, which was over-racing,
had to be eased when awkward close to the heels of Cula. Pimpernel raced wide throughout. Captain’s
Orders raced wide in the early and middle stages. Passing the 600 metres Pimpernel shifted in, crowding Al
Firenze onto Ocean Hunter. Apprentice Mogun (Pimpernel) was shown the video replays of the incidents and
told to exercise care at all times. For some distance leaving the 400 metres Emaar had to be eased when
unable to improve from behind Dawn Raid. Passing the 200 metres Al Firenze shifted in under pressure. Over
the concluding stages Emaar was taken out from behind Cula and Dawn Raid to secure clear running.
RACE 8 – THE VICTOR DUVIVIER CUP
Following the running of the race, the Stewards considered an objection lodged by jockey Winks, the rider of
nd
Criss Cross Man, being declared 2 , against Seven Carat being declared the winner, alleging interference in
the home straight. After taking evidence from both riders and trainers and viewing the video replays of the race,
it was established that near the 150 metres Criss Cross Man shifted in under pressure with jockey Winks
straightening his mount. Shortly after, when being ridden with the whip Seven Carat shifted out, carrying Criss
Cross Man, which was improving on its outside, wider over approximately 5 strides, inconveniencing the latter.
The Stewards, taking into consideration the degree of interference and the beaten margin of 0.1 length, were
satisfied that without the incident Criss Cross Man would have beaten Seven Carat and thus upheld the
st
nd
rd
th
objection with the new placings being: 1 Criss Cross Man, 2 Seven Carat. 3 : Please To Progress; 4 :
Ruby Rocker.
Ruby Rocker jumped awkwardly, unbalancing jockey Mansour. Captain Matthew was slow out and shortly
after was taken across to race behind runners. For some distance approaching the 1300 metres City Treasurer
raced tight onto Ruby Rocker. Passing the 1300 metres City Treasurer had to be checked and taken out to
avoid the heels of Lord Wellington, which was being taken in when insufficiently clear. Please To Progress
raced wide throughout. From leaving the 1200 metres Ruby Rocker was taken out to avoid the heels of Lord
Wellington and, in doing so, carried City Treasurer wider onto Please To Progress with Ruby Rocker racing
tight between City Treasurer and Lord Wellington for some distance. Yoda Man was taken out from
