Abstraet Variants of the classical deformation-induced surface baroclinic perturbation growth mechanisms are frontogenesis problem studied in the semi-geostrophic and of limit. To a clear-cut dynamical understanding of these processes, consideration is given to analytical models for quasi-two-dimensional perturbations of basic states in a semi-infinite, Boussinesq, stratified atmosphere of uniform potential vorticity. obtain explicit functional Solution is derived for the equation. It shows that the ageostrophic streamfunction is proportional to the along-front wind component and the height. At the surface this relation leads to a self-contained non-linear equation in real space for the time development of the flow features. It is shown that a discontinuity forms in a finite time at the location of the air parcel associated with a local maximum initial vorticity. For an imposed deformation flow field Sawyer-Eliassen an cross-front circulation A class of localized analytical flow solutions is derived to describe various types of deformation-induced surface fronts. These solutions enable the factors that determine the rate (and indeed the a discussion to be presented of direction) of frontal propagation relative to the background deformation field, the characteristic slopes of different frontal structures and strength of the ageostrophic circulation. In partieular a cold-front-type and two distinct warm-front-type developments were found with remarkably realistic structures in lower layers. The flow pattems apart from the weak vertical winds are comparable to numerical simulations and observations of mesoscale fronts. Detailed analyses of the self-consistency of the semi-geostrophic and hydrostatic assumptions show very small errors even for strong, the - well developed fronts, although Kelvin-Helmholtz instability could arise in during the last provided by the - phase of the derived the development The analytical surface flow relationships prove a small area solutions and the to be dynamical key insightful in understanding development of the various frontal features. in a baroclinic field is persued along three avenues: stability analysis of a two-layer system with uniform, but different shears and stratifications in the layers. A necessary condition for instability is derived which requires the shear in the upper, semi-infinite layer not to exceed a certain value related to the stratification. For each such configuration of the basic flow there appear two short and two long neutral modes as well as a decaying and a growing mode at intermediate wavelengths. The short neutral modes are bound to either the surface or the interface, the long neutral modes to either one or other of the layers. The unstable waves are explained in The examination of The first terms of approach perturbations consists of a potential vorticity dynamics and the growth rates for certain configurations are Eady problem. Some consideration is given to the formation of polar lows and explosive shown to suipass even those of the classical the linkage between cyclogenesis. these results and Secondly an examination is undertaken shear. This System is shown to exhibit of a some one-layer model with uniform background properties akin to the deformation model. For example the ageostrophic streamfunction is now proportional to the perturbation temperature and the height This functional relation implies a pulsation of all flow features. At die surface 8 eoupled set of equations is derived for the development of the temperature and wind fields. analogous to those utilized for the deformation case are used but with changed ageostrophic pattems and naturally a substantially different time development It is shown that although the system is baroclinically stable, interference effects of a localized wave packet can produee an ambient vorticity growth rate that exceeds that of some non-normal mode developments and of the classical Eady wave. During this pulsation flow a Localized flow solutions structures evolve core system with that resemble an a wann associated strong front with a cold conveyor belt and a mature warm vorticity maximum at the surface. In order to gain some insight as to how the localized initial flow conditions can be generated in a uniform shear Situation the non-adiabatic development of a heated surface layer above a warm region in the ocean is studied in a third, numerical approach. The sensible heat flux at the air-sea interface is represented in terms of the so-called bulk parametrization method. The simulations show that small preexisting perturbations are damped during the advection over the heated region, but that the passage of a trough strueture with an ambient signal in the large-scale wind generates a flow pattern that bears some resemblanee to the adiabatic localized flow Solution. Finally the analytical description of the surface flow development in the deformation and a definite event-orientated predietability study. The dynamical evolution of small scale errors is described analytically. It is shown that error amplitudes grow where gradients are large, although the root mean square measure of the error shear models is used for decreases. This result supports the thesis that mesoscale different approach from that employed in It is concluded that the essence of a variety a conceptually analytical models examined in this study can reproduce the cyclonic developments. Moreover the comparative of frontal and transparency of the models enables the predietability requires studies of predietability of larger scales. key processes involved in the a clear dynamical understanding to be gained of some of generation of these ubiquitous atmospheric phenomena.
