RG46_2016.indb 166 21/10/16 14:07 Zusammenfassungen F: In französischer Sprache D: In deutscher Sprache Björn Hayer Die Bezugslosen. RG46_2016.indb 170 21/10/16 14:07 Abstracts F: In french D: In german Björn Hayer The unrelated. Michael Thalheimer’s production of Lessing’s Emilia Galotti (2001) (F) Since Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s tragedy Emilia Galotti finds its tragic outcome in the death of the protagonist, is—according to Ter-Nedden—justified in the failure of communication of the figures. The director Michael Thalheimer takes up this interpretation in his realization of 2001 while he prevents the dialogicity on the stage space and emphazises the egocentricity of the actors. They are accompanied by the continuous loop of Shigeru Umebayashis Yumeji’s Theme prisoners of their social roles and a text which only still represents the verbal hull of lost subjectivity. As this postdramatic setting undermines both the common conventions of Aristotelian approach and the expectations of the viewer, the Arrangement provides in particular to a didactic problematization, as presented in the last part of the article. Philippe Alexandre The Germans at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris: The Experience of a Misunderstood Patriotism (F) At a time when the relationships were temporarily serene, the 1900 World Fair was in many regards an opportunity both for German and French people for an exceptional encounter. This event could actually be said to have been a mass movement, either in terms of people moving, ideas, or productions in all areas of human activity. The Exhibition was a place of intense cultural exchange, fierce rivalry and competition and hectic dynamism made even more so by national newspapers and magazines of the time. The reports put across the notion of a subtle interplay of mirror-like glances and effects. The idea was to convey a forceful national image to the neighbouring country and its people, among others, and to assert the nation’s cultural and economic leadership. The spread of knowledge was favoured by millions of visitors, among whom delegates sent RG46_2016.indb 171 21/10/16 14:07 172 RÉSUMÉS / Zusammenfassungen / Abstracts by local communities, experts, observers, newspapermen and journalists. Yet official publications also played a major part as they were to convey a convincing image of their own countries aimed at the public and prospective customers or possible partners, thus opening inroads for new economic prospects. As 130 international meetings were set up and held with a more or less direct connection with the Exhibition, the exchange of knowledge between nations, the development of cooperation and technology transfer were undoubtedly encouraged. Yet it cannot be ignored that these exchanges between Germany and France were severely disrupted by the misplaced feeling of patriotism or national chauvinism. In this respect part of the blame was to be laid on the media. Klaus-Detlef Müller History in the Novel and a Novel within History. Lion Feuchtwanger’s Success. Three years in the life of a (German) province (1930) (D) In his novel Success [Erfolg], Feuchtwanger satirically draws on social constellations and political events in the early years of the Weimar Republic. Consequently, it seemed natural to read the novel as ‘roman à clef,’ which, however, has proven unsatisfactory. The historical references, in particular to the Munich Putsch of 1923, are blended into the fictive plot and its rules, which interprets their non-sensical nature in a historicophilosophical manner. In so doing, a distinct, autoreferential type of historical novel comes into being. Based on narratological means and their fictional self–reflection, this new type is suitable to generate a ‘plausible’ explanation for the events whose absurdity it exposes. Ralph Winter Appropriation in Klaus Mann’s reception of André Gide. Identification as a productive pattern in French-German cultural transfer (D) Personal and professional exchange between André Gide and Klaus Mann were not really driven by mutual interest and yet Mann’s admiration for the older French writer has been a very productive aspect of his life and work. He published a certain number of essays on Gide as well as an extensive biography and, by doing so, he contributed to a wider spreading of Gide’s works and ideas in the German speaking world. Within these biographical writings traces of a clearly induvial, even identificational reception of Gide’s works can be observed and described. By intertextual participation and transformation (Lachmann), Mann even comes to an intellectual and formal appropriation of these works. This practice shows how individual ways of reception can influence FrenchGerman cultural transfer. RG46_2016.indb 172 21/10/16 14:07 RÉSUMÉS / Zusammenfassungen / Abstracts 173 Jan Schlosser Places and Non-Places in Paul Celan’s Engführung (D) While Celan research until now was focused on biographical and linguistic references, the purpose of this article is to establish an anthropological frame of reference for the analysis of the poem Engführung, in which Celan thematises a transformed anthropological room. Celan’s literary anticipation of Marc Augé’s theory Places and Non-Places is central. Celan does not accept the postmodern claim that the idea of progress has collapsed. The anticipation of super-modernity takes place in Engführung in the sense that the search of meaning is recognisable as opposed to the dominance of non-places. Celan endeavours to establish places with cultural and historical identity. Valérie de Daran The illuminating cartoons of Ironimus (F) Caricature is often considered the epitome of a distorting image. But this does not take into account the way it derives force from simplification, or its instructive and pedagogical dimension. The cartoons the Austrian caricaturist IRONIMUS (Gustav Peichl) drew for the press over nearly 60 years offer a particularly illuminating survey of political life under the Second Republic. With humour and bonhomie, they represent the main events of Austrian history after 1945 in a sober and distanced analysis. Jolanta Pacyniak Crossing borders and their disappearance in literary representations of the business world (D) In this article we analyse the problem of blurring and pushing the boundaries from an economic perspective. Our considerations are based on three novels from the years 1991, 2003 and 2012 by Uwe Timm, Burkhard Spinnen and Nora Bossong, all of which address some economic issues. The examined boundary problem manifests itself in the dissolution of the boundary between the concepts: work and leisure or idleness. Another reference point is the literary game that takes place between the fictional and autobiographical elements on the one hand, and the appearance and reality in economic affairs on the other. We can observe an increase in the chaotic and boundary-blurring elements in the description of economic problems in the analysed works. Emmanuelle Terrones Kurzmitteilung by Navid Kermani: the writing of mourning (F) Navid Kermani’s novel Kurzmitteilung (2007) shows a man who can’t help being in mourning after the death of a young woman he hardly knew. This paper begins with the legitimacy of mourning, a question that appears at the outset of the novel and RG46_2016.indb 173 21/10/16 14:07 174 RÉSUMÉS / Zusammenfassungen / Abstracts determines his inner rhythm from the beginning to the end. There is to analyze the effects of the mourning imposed upon the protagonist like a moral imperative or a responsibility: the strangeness his words and actions take on, the confusion that spreads to him. The monologue he writes is evidence of the silent isolation to which the notice of the death condemned him, as well as the progressive and ineluctable loss of his own identity: the writing of mourning becomes mourning for himself. All of this leaves us to understand that the obsessive idea of death obliges him to live and think according to other coordinates which he tries to define by his writing process. It amounts to rethinking everything from death. Arvi Sepp Memory and Minority. Representations of Collective Identity in the GermanLanguage Literature in Belgium (F) Through a close reading of selected literary texts from German-speaking minority authors in East Belgium, this contribution will discuss the status of the literary representation of minority culture and its expression of multiple identities and allegiances as a space (be it geographic, cultural, linguistic, or aesthetic) in which global and local forces interact. In our analysis, we will rely on three fairly recent novels: Bosch in Belgien (2006) by Freddy Derwahl, Unterwegs zu Melusine (2006) by Hannes Anderer und Wege aus Sümpfen (2001) by Leo Wintgens. The border region these German–language authors write from play an important role in their conception of selfhood and otherness. The complex historical, political and linguistic context of this region in a multilingual country, bordered by Germany, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, is of utmost importance to understand the differing conceptualizations of collective Belgian germanophone identity.
