CARL UND GEORGES PASSAVANT: REISEFOTOGRAFIEN AUS
AFRIKA UND CHINA 1883 – 1989
Ausgedehnte Reisen führten die beiden Basler Brüder Carl und Georges Passavant
im ausklingenden 19. Jahrhundert unter anderem nach Afrika und Asien, von wo sie eine
reiche Sammlung fotografischer Dokumente zurück nach Europa brachten. Erstmals
überhaupt ist nun eine Auswahl aus diesem beeindruckenden Panorama historischer
Fotografien öffentlich zu sehen. Mit einer grosszügigen Leinwandprojektion, Textcollagen
über Hörstationen und Originalfotografien begleitet die Ausstellung «Das Fremde
im Blick» die beiden Brüder auf ihren Reisen nach Afrika und China und beleuchtet die
Auseinandersetzung mit dem exotischen Reiz dieser damals fernen Weltgegenden.
Die Reisen der Gebrüder Passavant waren dem Zeitgeist und ihrer bürgerlichen Herkunft
verpflichtet. Den Mediziner und Anthropologen Carl Passavant (1854 – 1887) zog es
zwischen 1883 und 1885 zu Forschungszwecken zweimal nach West- und Zentralafrika.
Georges Passavant-Fichter (1862 –1952) bereiste in den Jahren 1888 und 1889 als
Tourist fast die ganze Welt. Trotz der exotischen Destinationen Neuseeland, Java, Indien,
Thailand, Japan und China unternahm er eine für die damalige Zeit durchaus konventionelle Reise, während sein Bruder Carl in West- und Zentralafrika weitgehend
touristische terra incognita betrat. Beiden Brüdern gemeinsam war die Faszination am
fotografischen Bild, die sich in einer beeindruckenden Fotokollektion niederschlug.
Seit 1952 als Depositum und seit 1998 als Schenkung im Besitz des Museums der
Kulturen, wurden Teile der Passavant-Sammlung in den letzten Jahren aufgearbeitet.
Das breite Bilderspektrum der Ausstellung gibt eine Übersicht über die Produktion
touristischer Erinnerungsbilder im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert in zwei weit voneinander entfernten Weltgegenden. Dabei wird vor allem im Hinblick auf die auffallenden
Ähnlichkeiten der Sujets und die Inszenierung von Bildinhalten der europäische
Blickwinkel auf diese so fremden Lebenswelten deutlich.
Der bereits im Herbst 2005 im Christoph Merian Verlag erschienene Band «Fotofieber.
Bilder aus West- und Zentralafrika. Die Reisen von Carl Passavant 1883 – 1885» dient als
Begleitpublikation zur Ausstellung.

Les deux frères Carl et Georges Passavant ont entrepris à la fin du 19e siècle de longs
voyages, notamment en Afrique et en Asie, d'où ils ont rapporté une riche collection
de documents photographiques. Un ensemble représentatif de ce vaste panorama de
photographies historiques est pour la première fois accessible au public. Avec une projection sur grand écran, des assemblages de textes sous forme de stations sonores et un
ensemble de photographies originales, l'exposition «Regard sur l'étranger» accompagne
les deux frères durant leurs voyages en Afrique et en Chine et met en lumière la
fascination exotique exercée en ce temps-là par ces pays si lointains.
Les voyages des frères Passavant s'inscrivent dans l'esprit de leur époque et dans le
contexte de leur origine bourgeoise. Le médecin et anthropologue Carl Passavant (1854 –
1887) a entrepris deux fois, entre 1883 et 1885, des expéditions de recherche en Afrique
occidentale et centrale. Georges Passavant-Fichter (1862 – 1952), lui, a voyagé
en touriste durant les années 1888 et 1889, parcourant ou presque le monde entier. Les
destinations ont certes des noms exotiques, mais le circuit accompli revêt plutôt la
forme classique des grands voyages de son époque. Par contre, son frère Carl est parti
en Afrique occidentale et centrale à la découverte de terra incognita sur le plan touristique.
Les deux frères partagent la même fascination de la photographie, comme l'illustre
l'impressionnante richesse en documents photographiques.
Cette collection est en possession du Museum der Kulturen, qui l'abrite depuis 1952 en
tant que dépôt et depuis 1998 en tant que donation. Une partie de la collection Passavant
a été remise en état durant ces dernières années. Le large éventail des témoignages
photographiques donne un aperçu de la production des photos touristiques vers la fin
du 19e siècle dans deux endroits du monde situés aux antipodes l'un de l'autre. Les
similitudes frappantes des sujets et la mise en scène des contenus photographiques
mettent en évidence la perspective européenne de ce regard sur deux univers tout à fait
étrangers.
Un ouvrage paru dès l'automne 2005 aux éditions Christoph Merian «Fotofieber. Bilder aus
West- und Zentralafrika. Die Reisen von Carl Passavant 1883 – 1885» accompagne cette
exposition.

AFRICA AND CHINA 1883 – 1889
Towards the end of the 19th century, two brothers from Basel – Carl and Georges
Passavant – travelled extensively, inter alia, to Africa and Asia, from where they brought a
rich collection of photographs back to Europe. Now, for the very first time, a selection
from this impressive panorama of historic images will be on show to the public. With a
large-screen projection, headphones providing commentaries and a selection of the
original photographs, the exhibition «The Other in Perspective» follows the two brothers
on their journeys through Africa and China, shedding light on contemporary attitudes
to the exotic appeal of what were then remote parts of the world.
The travels of the Passavant brothers reflected the Zeitgeist and their own bourgeois
origins. Between 1883 and 1885, research projects prompted the physician and anthropologist Carl Passavant (1854 – 1887) to make two journeys to Western and Central Africa.
His brother Georges Passavant-Fichter (1862–1952) roamed as a tourist through almost
every country in the world during the years 1888 and 1889. Although Georges called in on
some exotic destinations (New Zealand, Java, India, Thailand, Japan and China) his was
a journey that was entirely conventional for the age in which he lived. His brother Carl, on
the other hand, explored what was largely terra incognita to tourists in Western and
Central Africa. Both brothers shared a fascination for the photographic image and this
interest is reflected in an impressive collection of photographs.
After being on permanent loan to the Museum der Kulturen since 1952, and then passing
into the museum’s ownership as a gift in 1998, parts of the Passavant collection have
been collated over the last few years. The broad spectrum of the images chosen provides
an overview of the type of souvenir photographs taken towards the end of the 19th century
by tourists in two parts of the world that are so distant one from another. In view of the
striking similarities in subject matter and the way in which the pictures are composed, the
European approach to these very alien worlds becomes particularly apparent.
The book «Fotofieber. Bilder aus West- und Zentralafrika. Die Reisen von Carl Passavant
1883 – 1885», published by the Christoph Merian Verlag, serves as the accompanying
publication to the exhibition.
