Adverbs of Frequency
Adverbs of Frequency
Just like in English, French adverbs of frequency explain how often something occurs.
The French adverbs of frequency are:
d’habitude = “usually”
souvent = “often”
quelquefois = “sometimes”
de temps en temps = “from time to time”
rarement = “rarely”
ne…jamais = “never” (use it as you would ne…pas)
___ fois par semaine = “___ times per week”
Placement of Adverbs of Frequency
In English, there is no rule governing the placement of adverbs of frequency. It depends
on the speaker’s intended emphasis.
In French, they often come after the verb. Here are some examples:
Je voyage souvent. “I travel often.”
Je ne vais jamais à la plage. “I never go to the beach.”
Sometimes they can be placed at the beginning or the end of the sentence in French,
such as when naming a specific number of times.
Je joue au tennis une fois par semaine. “I play tennis once a week.”
Je pars en vacances de temps en temps. “From time to time, I go on vacation.”
