RAPPEL DES MISSIONS DE DOCOMOMO
Docomomo, commission internationale pour la documentation
et la conservation de l'architecture, des sites et du patrimoine
bâti du mouvement moderne, a pour mission de :
1- Révéler l'importance du mouvement moderne à l'attention du
public, des autorités, des professionnels et de la communauté
scientifique.
2- Identifier et promouvoir l'ensemble des œuvres du mouvement
moderne par la création d'un fichier international général.
3- Aider au développement et à la dissémination des techniques
et des méthodes de conservation.
4- S’opposer à la destruction et à la défiguration des œuvres
architecturales importantes.
5- Collecter des fonds pour la documentation et la conservation.
6- Explorer et développer la connaissance du mouvement moderne.
Depuis sa création, Docomomo International a connu un rapide
développement
en
se
positionnant
comme
un
partenaire
indispensable non seulement dans le domaine de la conservation
mais
également
dans
le
champ
plus
vaste
de
la
culture
architecturale. Son rayonnement international est dû à plusieurs
facteurs, dont la prise de conscience croissante de l'urgence de
la sauvegarde du patrimoine architectural récent. De plus, la
dimension pluraliste et interdisciplinaire de Docomomo – composé
à
la
fois
paysagistes,
d’historiens,
de
d'universitaires
spécialistes
et
de
d’architectes,
en
membres
d’urbanistes,
préservation
d’institutions

permis de créer un réseau international unique.

RESTATING DOCOMOMO MISSIONS
The mission of Docomomo, the international commission for
the documentation and conservation of architecture, sites, and
neighborhoods of the modern movement, is to:

scientific community

movement for the purpose of creating a general, international
register.

important
architectural works.

funds

documentation

conservation
activities.

explore
and
further
develop
knowledge
of
the
modern
movement.
After its creation, Docomomo International rapidly took its
place
as
an
indispensable
partner
in
the
realm
of
heritage
conservation, not only with regards to conservation, but having
an overreaching importance to the vast field of architectural
culture.

1. Fonctionnement du secrétariat
1.1. Coordination et diffusion du réseau
En 2006, le secrétariat de Docomomo International a traité
plus de 2000 courriers (mèls, fax et lettres). Environ un tiers
de
ces
courriers
concernait
des
demandes
de
renseignements
généraux sur les missions et les activités de Docomomo. Un tiers
émanait
de
coordonnées
membres
de
de
Docomomo
correspondants
ou
qui
des
désiraient
avoir
renseignements
sur
des
les
activités des comités internationaux de spécialistes. Le tiers
restant était lié à la production des différentes publications
(envoi de textes, épreuves successives et photographies). Le
secrétariat s’est efforcé de répondre de manière individualisée
à tous les courriers et de faire fonctionner le réseau le plus
efficacement possible. L’ensemble de cette correspondance a été
daté
et
classé
avec
les
réponses
correspondantes
dans
les
classeurs du bureau afin qu’une trace écrite soit conservée.

Le
secrétariat
a
assuré
la
gestion
de
l’ensemble
des
abonnements individuels, institutionnels, corporatifs et groupé
par
pays/région.
Chaque
demande
a
fait
l’objet
d’un
reçu
comptable, a été actualisée dans la base de données Docomomo, et
a donné lieu à un envoi de la/ou des revues correspondant/es à
l’abonnement. Toutes les recettes et les dépenses de Docomomo
ont
été
comptabilisées
avec
leur
numéro
de
compte,
justificatif et leur libellé exact dans un tableau Excel.

1.1. Coordination and dissemination of network information
In 2006, the secretariat of Docomomo International managed more
than 2,000 pieces of correspondence (e-mails, faxes, and
letters). Approximately, a third of this correspondence was
general requests for information pertaining to Docomomo’s
activities. Another third came from Docomomo members who wanted
to obtain contact information for or additional information
about the activities of Docomomo’s special international
committees. The final third consisted of correspondence
regarding the production of various publications (sending text,
editing successive drafts, and finding photos). The secretariat
insists on responding to all correspondence in an personal and
individual manner, as to ensure the Docomomo network functions
well and efficiently. Each piece of correspondence, along with
subsequent communication, was dated and categorized, in the
office’s files, so that a record may be kept.

wanting
to
become
part
of
Docomomo, at the time of the 2006 International Conference in
Ankara.
In 2006, six countries worked with the international secretariat
to present their candidacy at the General Assemblies of the
Canada-Atlantic Region, Columbia, Cyprus, Malta, Morocco, and
Puerto Rico.
1.3. Participation in campaigns to protect modern buildings.
In 2006, the secretariat of Docomomo was contacted on eleven
occasions to participate in campaigns aimed at raising awareness
or protecting important modern buildings. In response to these
campaigns, Docomomo International secured contacts with local
organizations, published articles in the Docomomo Journal, wrote
letters of support to the organizations, and official letters to
those responsible for the stewardship of the buildings
(ministers, municipalities, organizations. The abovementioned
actions taken were in regard to the following buildings (listed
in alphabetical order of country):

1.4. Administration of subscriptions and accounting
The secretariat insures the proper administration of individual,
institutional, corporate, and country/regional group
subscriptions. Each request was processed as with a receipt,
entered into Docomomo’s database and all corresonding journals
were mailed. All of Docomomo’s revenue and expenses were entered
with their account number, the reason for and the exact nature
of the transaction in a Microsoft Excel table.
2. Publication de la revue internationale de Docomomo
Conformément

Docomomo International a publié en 2006 les deux numéros de la
revue biannuelle de Docomomo (mars et septembre) qui ont été
diffusés dans nos cinquante-deux pays membres. Un exemplaire de
chaque numéro a également été envoyé à tous les secrétariats des
sections de Docomomo pour être archivée.

Elvan Altan Ergut et Belgin Turan Ôzkaya, membres de Docomomo
Turquie.
Le
numéro
a
été
présenté
publiquement
lors
de
la
conférence internationale d’Ankara en septembre 2006.
2. Publication of Docomomo’s International Journal
In 2006, in accordance with their duties, the secretariat of
Docomomo International published two editions of the bi-annual
journal (March and September) were published and distributed to
our 47 member countries. A copy of each edition was also mailed
to all of the secretariats of Docomomo to be archived.
This hundred-page journal is presently the only international
periodical that regularly provides up-to-date information about
research pertaining to buildings and sites of the modern
movement. It offers articles about general themes, alerts
professionals when a structure is threatened, and provides
information about conferences, expositions, and leading
university restoration and conservation programs focused on
twentieth century construction. Additionally, each numbered
edition includes an address/contact section of Docomomo’s
correspondents that work with universities, architecture
schools, museums, and national institutions, as a means of
becoming more knowledgeable and protecting architecture of the
modern movement.
The two editions published in 2006 were dedicated to the
architectural links between France and Brazil and to the modern
movement in Middle-East, respectively. Journal number 34 (March
2006) explored the relationships between French and Brazilian
architects during the twentieth century. It also included the
proceedings from the research day organized by Docomomo
International in collaboration with Docomomo Brasil (Anat Falbel
and Hugo Segawa), held in June of 2005, the year of FranceBrazil. Journal number 35 from September 2006 was a special
addition, dedicated to modern movement architecture in the
Middle-East. The published articles served to valorize and
celebrate the diversity of urban expressions and twentieth
century architecture in numerous Near-East countries: Turkey,
Cyprus, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, and Jordan. The two
guest editors for this edition were Elvan Altan Ergut and Belgin
Turan Ozkaya, members of Docomomo Turkey. In September 2006,
Journal number 35 was presented at the Ankara Conference.
3. Actions partenariales nationales
Docomomo International et la Cité de l’architecture et du
patrimoine, qui héberge son secrétariat au sein de l’Institut
français d’architecture, travaillent en étroite collaboration.
Le
réseau
international
de
Docomomo
constitue
une
interface
unique pour ses actions de visibilité internationale menées par
la Cité et un lieu privilégié d’échanges et de discussions entre
architectes, chercheurs et grand public au sein de l’Institut
français
d’architecture.
L’année
2006
a
été
l’occasion
de
développer de nouvelles actions partenariales nationales entre
Docomomo
International
et
les
institutions
françaises,
en
particulier avec la Cité internationale universitaire de Paris
au sujet de la restauration de la fondation Avicenne, construite
par Claude Parent en 1968 (voir point 3).
3.1. Diffusion des publications Docomomo au sein de la Cité
Conjointement,
toutes
les
publications
produites
par
Docomomo International en 2006 (brochures et revues) ont été
distribuées
à

journée
d’étude
consacrée
à

réhabilitation des édifices métalliques a été organisée le 4
novembre 2006 à la Cité internationale universitaire de Paris.
La table ronde Docomomo, présidée par Maristella Casciato, a
fourni l’occasion de présenter les travaux de réhabilitations de
plusieurs
membres
de
Docomomo
(dont
Wessel
de
Jonge,
Bruce
Kaskel et Pier Giovanni Bardelli) devant un très large public.
Les actes du colloque seront publiés à l’automne 2007 par la
Cité internationale.
3.4. Participation au Salon du patrimoine 2006 (Paris)
Docomomo
International
était
aussi
présent
au
salon
du
Patrimoine organisé les 8 et 9 novembre 2006 qui réunit chaque
année
300
organisations
œuvrant
dans
le
domaine
culturel
(ministères, associations, fondations, artisans). Nos dépliants
et publications ont été diffusés sur le stand de la Cité de
l’architecture et du patrimoine où le secrétariat de Docomomo a
assuré
une
permanence
afin
de
répondre
aux
questions
des
visiteurs.
3. National Partnership Work
Docomomo International and the Cité de l’Architecture et
Patrimoine, which houses the secretariat work in close
collaboration. The international network of Docomomo creates of
a unique interface for its activities lead by the Commission,
also providing a place for discussion and the exchange of ideas
between architects, researchers, and the public at large within
the Cité de l’architecture.
The year of 2006 was a chance to develop new active national
partnerships between Docomomo International and French
institutions, in particular with the Cité, with regards to the
restoration of the Avicenne Foundation constructed in 1968 by
Claude Parent (See Point 3.3).
3.1. Dissemination of Docomomo publications within the Cité
All publications produced by Docomomo International during 2006
(leaflets and journals) were distributed to all personnel at the
Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine. The dissemination of
these publications fostered the development of links between
Docomomo International and other departments within the Cité,
most notably, the newly formed relationship with the Twentieth
Century Archives and the Museum of French Monuments.
3.2. Participation in the CAUE44 Colloquium on twentieth century
heritage.
In October, Docomomo participated in the CAUE44 Colloquium,
focused on the theme of “Disinterest in Recognizing Architecture
and Heritage of the Twentieth Century,” where Emilie d’Orgeix
presented a lecture that explored the abovementioned topic and
discussed the world-wide activities of Docomomo International.
3.3. Study-day on the Rehabilitation of Metallic Buildings in
partnership with the Cité Internationale universitaire de Paris.
Once again in 2006, Docomomo International collaborated with
French institutions on order to circulate and disseminate in
France
the
actions
of
our
international
network.
Docomomo
International organized a study day on November 4th 2006 at the
Cité Internationale in Paris. Dedicated to the rehabilitation of
metallic buildings, the study day was introduced by Maristella
Casciato chair of Docomomo International and offered to several
of our members the opportunity to present their work as heritage
consultants and architects. Among the speakers were Wessel de
Jonge, Bruce Kaskel and Pier Giovanni Bardelli) who presented
case studies in front of a wide public. The proceedings of the
day will be published in 2007 by the Parisian Publishing house
l’Oeil d’Or.
3.4. Participation to the 2006 Salon du patrimoine (Paris)
Docomomo
International
was
also
present
at
the
Salon
du
Patrimoine culturel (cultural Heritage Forum) organized in Paris
on November 8 and 9, 2006, which every year gathers around 300
organizations
working
in
the
Cultural
field
(governments,
departments, associations, foundations, craftsmen). Our leaflets
and publications were distributed at the cité de l’architecture
et du patrimoine’s stand where the Docomomo secretariat was
constantly present to answer visitors’ questions.
4.1. Conférences sur les missions de Docomomo à l’international
Au mois d’avril, Emilie d’Orgeix a été invitée par la
section

En octobre, Docomomo a participé à la rencontre organisée
par le CAUE 44 sur le thème « Architectures et patrimoines du
XXe siècle – de l’indifférence à la reconnaissance » où Emilie
d’Orgeix a présenté une conférence sur le thème et les activités
de Docomomo International à travers le monde.
Au mois de novembre, Maristella Casciato a assisté à Tokyo
avec Tadao Ando à la conférence du mAAN au cours de laquelle
elle a présenté les activités de Docomomo International.
En
décembre
2006,
Maristella
Casciato
a
prononcé
une
conférence à l’Open University de Cambridge dans le cadre du
nouveau programme de conservation du patrimoine où elle était
invitée en tant qu’expert avec Jorge Otero-Pailos de Columbia
University de New York.
4.2. Participation à la conférence Heritage@risk, Moscou
En
avril
2006,
Docomomo
International
a
participé,
aux
côtés de l’Icomos et du World Monument Fund, à la conférence
Heritage@risk à Moscou qui visait à sensibiliser les autorités
russes
à
notamment

4.4. Aide à la mobilité des membres de Docomomo à l’international
En 2006, Docomomo international a reçu le soutien de la
Kaplan Fund de New York pour le déplacement et la participation
d’une délégation composée de sept membres de Docomomo Cuba à la
neuvième conférence internationale de Docomomo à Ankara.

In April, Emilie d’Orgeix, secretary general of Docomomo
was invited by the Lebanese branch of Unesco and George Arbid of
the American University, to present the activities of Docomomo
International, at a conference organized in collaboration with
the Order of Architects in Beirut.

by Docomomo UK in London on modern houses as well as the annual
encounter
of
Docomomo
ISC/Registers
held

week
in
London.

September,

2004-2006.

Maristella
Casciato
attended
in
Tokyo
the
conference organized by the mAAN with Tadao Ando and gave a talk
on Docomomo activities.
In December, Maristella Casciato gave a talk at the Open
University
in
Cambridge
for
the
new
program
on
Heritage
Conservation to which she was invited along with Jorge OteroPailos of Columbia University in New York.
4.2. Participation to the Heritage@Risk conference in Moscow
In
April
2006,
Docomomo
International
participated
with
the
ICOMOS and the WMF to the conference Heritage@risk organized in
Moscow. Aiming at
raising public
and political awareness in
Russia regarding Modern Heritage, the conference included visits
of
the
Melnikov
House
and
the
Narkomfim
houses
complex.
An
agreement of collaboration and sharing of technical know-how was
signed at this occasion between the ICOMOS-DOCOMOMO-WMF-UIA.
4.3. Round table at the National Institute of Art History on the
fate of the Teatro Capitolio in Lisboa.
On November 10, 2006, Docomomo International organised a round
table
with

In 2006, Docomomo international prepared for Docomomo Cuba
a grant application at the J.M Kaplan fund, to support the
travel expenses of the delegation of Docomomo Cuba’s members to
the Ninth International Conference in Ankara.

French
In 2006, Docomomo published 9000 leaflets (3000 in English,
3000 in Spanish and 3000 in French) to serve as tools for the
public awareness and the recognition of Docomomo’s network and
activities.
Those
leaflets
are
available
to
all
chapters upon request at the Secretariat.
