SWISSFILMS INFO ISSUE_2006.2 BEILAGE ZUM CINÉ-BULLETIN NR. 370 SUPPLÉMENT AU CINÉ-BULLETIN N° 370 coming soon L’ECART BY FRANZ JOSEF HOLZER BREAKOUT BY MIKE ESCHMANN COMME DES VOLEURS BY LIONEL BAIER DAS ERBE DER BERGLER BY ERICH LANGJAHR HE WAS A SWISS BANKER BY THOMAS IMBACH MARMORERA BY MARKUS FISCHER LOVE MADE EASY BY PETER LUISI HARDCORE CHAMBERMUSIC BY PETER LIECHTI MON FRERE SE MARIE BY JEAN-STÉPHANE BRON editorial The years 2005 and – it is already certain! – 2006 will both go down as record years in the annals of Swiss film: with an uninterrupted series of success on the domestic market, a confidence has become apparent, a confidence which presses incessantly forward and seeks confirmation at international film festivals and markets. Behind the abstract figures of market shares and festival participation presented in this issue of SWISS FILMS INFO are filmmakers whose faces embody this upswing in public. Their names are Michael Steiner, Stina Werenfels, Fredi M. Murer or Ruxandra Zenide, … and their talent as directors adds new, powerful colours to Swiss fiction films. Their names are Bruno Ganz, Natacha Koutchoumov, Carlos Leal or Marthe Keller, … and their acting talent draws viewers to the cinemas. Their names are Gabriela Antosiewicz, Jacqueline Veuve, Georges Gachot or Christian Frei, … and their talent for observation, their appreciation for composition and montage lend the Swiss documentary film its noble style. The names of short and animated filmmakers – Claude Barras and Cédric Louis, whose film was entered in the competition in Cannes – come to mind, though they cannot all be named. Together, they typify the diversity, the new trends and aspirations of cinematography which not only is ambitious, intelligent and imaginative, but which most notably succeeds in winning over the public as well. Our thanks to the following associations and agencies for their support, both in making data available and in providing helpful advice: the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (SFSO) (Umberto Tedeschi), the Swiss Federal Office of Culture (FOC) – Succès cinema (Laurent Steiert), Procinéma (René Gerber), and of course the producers and distributors. Switzerland was not spared from this downward trend, whose impact was also felt by other European countries. During this same time period, the number of new films screened in cinemas decreased by 9%: from 420 to 383. The public’s lack of interest affected especially American films, whose portion of the market declined by 10%. European films together amounted to 35.7%, however, resulting in more than one third of box-office sales. This positive development can be attributed in part to the excellent results attained by Swiss films (6.58%), in which minority coproductions only played a minor role last year. Ranking among this year’s three greatest hits is one Swiss film, the only film in the Top Ten for the year 2005 not from America. SWITZERLAND AT A GLANCE Population: 7'405'051 Languages: German 64% French 20% Italian 6.5% Rhaeto-romanic 0.5% others 9% Major cities: Zurich (953’758) Geneva (464’022) Basel (401’470) Bern = Capital (319’559) Lausanne (289’610) Number of households: 3'100'000 (estimate) Working population: 4’177’000 Unemployment rate: 3.7% Per-capita income: 39'041 CHF (24’400 €) Percentage of households: with TV: 93.6% with video: 68.2% with cable: 84% Source: SFSO Federal Office of Communications / State Secretariat for Economic Affairs Par rapport à l’année 2004, le nombre de spectateurs a baissé de plus de 2 millions en 2005. This is mainly due to Michael Steiner’s “Mein Name ist Eugen”. This story about two twelve-yearold boys and their adventures throughout Switzerland broke the record set by “Ready, Steady, Charlie!” in 2003 and ranked third at the Swiss box office. Michael Steiner is on the verge of repeating his brilliant performance: his film “Grounding” (co-director: Tobias Fueter) has caught the attention of a vast number of cinemagoers within a few months. Such success, however, should not obscure the achievements of “Snow White” or “One Long Winter Without Fire”, the only French-speaking film to rank among the Top Five and be entered in the competition at Mostra in Venice. With 34 films, the production of documentary films increased impressively compared with an average of 20 films in previous years. The fact that almost all the films were released in the cinema indicates, on the one hand, the quality of these works and, on the other hand, the viewers’ interest in this genre. The films with the best ticket sales illustrate the diversity of the directors’ styles and forms of expression: be it an impassioned scrutiny of the Jewish community in Zurich (“Matchmaker”) or the slow rhythm of life in Lapland (“Näkkälä”), a portrait of an auto-racing icon (“Jo Siffert Live Fast – Die Young”) or that of a solitary adventurer (“Arktos”), the topics were as diverse as the manner in which the filmmakers chose to deal with them. Approximately 200 films – short fiction films, animated films, short documentary films and experimental works – are created every year. The films range from film-school productions, whose professionalism is frequently recognized internationally, to works by independent filmmakers, for whom the short film serves as a specific form of expression time and again. Apart from their release in the cinema as supporting programs, participation at festivals and/or special events, short films are also being released on television and ever more frequently on mobile telephones and the Internet. The popularity of short films in Switzerland thus continues to grow. The length of short films renders them especially suitable as supporting films in cinemas, which contributes to the fact that they were seen by a total of 265’000 cinemagoers last year. The Short Film Night, which is organised by SWISS FILMS, toured 18 cities and thus joined a total of 13’000 aficionados of this genre. An additional 40’000 viewers saw short films at other events, including open-airs and film programs. Although Swiss films were represented at almost all A-category festivals in 2005 – for example, in Berlin, Locarno and Montreal – they were unable to make the leap to Cannes, San Sebastian and Venice. Fiction films such as “Absolut”, “Ryna” and “One Long Winter Without Fire” and documentary films like “Coca – The Dove From Chechnya”, “Feline Masquerade” and “The Giant Buddhas” succeeded in launching impressive festival careers and winning numerous awards. The dynamic of Swiss short film productions is internationally recognized and appreciated. Festival favourites were “Hoi Maya” and “Chyenne”. The film “Terra incognita” was well received at numerous festivals due to its innovative, hybrid style combining documentary, fiction, animation, and experimental film. Animated films such as “Die kleine Monsterin” and “Herr Würfel” were exceedingly successful as well. The short film about football, “Wir sind dir treu”, has embarked on a rapid festival career since October 2005, having already been screened at 26 festivals. Furthermore, Swiss short films have succeeded in making a breakthrough in the short film competitions at major A-category festivals: in 2005 “Hoi Maya” was at the Berlinale, followed by “113” at the Mostra in Venice, and in 2006 “Banquise” ran in the short film competition and “Hunde” in the Cinéfondation film school section in Cannes. 11 film sales abroad FICTION FILMS TITLE / DIRECTOR PRODUCTION COMPANY WORLD SALES DISTRIBUTOR / TV (COUNTRY) GARÇON STUPIDE Saga Production Adriana Chiesa Enterprises (Italy) Pierre Grise (France) Salzgeber (Germany) Picture This (USA) T&C Film Allegro Film (Austria) Film & Music Entertainment (UK) Samsa Film (Luxembourg) Home Run Pictures (Germany) Eurofilm Studio (Hungary) Sola Media (Germany) 21 Entertainment Corp (Balticum & Russia) FEG, Video DVD & Pay TV (Belgium) Showtime (Brazil) DDDReams TV (China) AQS (Czech Republic & Slovakia) MC1, DVD (Germany) Videosonic (Greece) Farabi (Iran) FEG, Video, (Netherlands) Noble Entertainment, Video (Scandinavia) J Bics (Thailand) Triluna Film Media Luna Entertainment (Germany) RTV Slowenija (Slovenia) Mongkol Cinema (Thailand) Parasol Pecadillo, DVD (UK) HBO/Here TV, TV (USA) Arizitical Entertainment, DVD (USA) Kontraproduktion / C-Films Beta Film (Germany) MFA (Germany) Amka Films Orione Cinematografica (Italy) Adriana Chiesa Enterprises (Italy) Istituto Luce (Italy) Orione Cinematografica (Italy) Samir Dschoint Ventschr Filmproduktion Wide Management Entreprise (France) Filmladen (Austria) Stardust (Germany) Overseas Distributions (Singapore) Cineplex Inc. Whether the recent entry into the MEDIA program in 2006 will open up new prospects for distribution abroad in other European countries is not yet foreseeable. Nevertheless, the distribution of Swiss documentary films was comparatively good and met with interest and recognition far beyond domestic borders, thanks to diversified topics and high-quality filmmaking. No less than 20 films were sold abroad in 2005: for the most part to television stations, but in some cases to cinema distributors as well. While two films inspired by Brazilian music, “Maria Bethânia – música é perfume” (13 countries) and “Brasileirinho” (20 countries), launched particularly successful careers in the cinema, cinematic portraits of wellknown figures such as Bruno Ganz, Alberto Giacometti, Henri Cartier Bresson, Norman Forster or Hedy Lamarr have a good chance of being distributed to television stations in particular. Indeed, it was not enough for the film to account for half of the box-office sales in Switzerland, for it was also awarded the Swiss Film Prize 2006 for the “Best Fiction Film”. While such a success is only to be celebrated, our national filmmaking industry cannot allow itself to rely on a single annual blockbuster to secure its position in the cinemas and in the audience’s heart. It would be more desirable to have the success of Swiss films – both commercial and noteworthy – spread over several works which reflect the diversity of national production. From this point of view, the year 2006 augurs more favourably. There are no less than four Swiss fiction films, most diverse in terms of genre and style, parading at the top of the box office and granting the Swiss filmmaking industry a market share unattained for decades. This quartet is composed of “Grounding” by Michael Steiner and Tobias Fueter, “Vitus” by Fredi M. Murer, “Jeune Homme” by Christoph Schaub and “Handyman” by Jürg Ebe. Swiss cinematography’s state of grace coincides with the publication of a study* on the tastes of the Swiss population regarding the subject of films, in the light of which it would seem interesting to analyse the sudden success of our national filmmaking industry. * Cinema audiences in Switzerland. A sociological study. Commissioned by the Federal Office of Culture at Lausanne University. Led by the sociologist Olivier Moeschler on the basis of a survey carried out by MIS Trend in Lausanne in January 2006 with a sample of 1’408 people representative of the Swiss population. GROUNDING BY MICHAEL STEINER / TOBIAS FUETER 15 The Swiss audience – an unknown quantity reveals itself Le public suisse, un inconnu qui se dévoile Das Schweizer Publikum – neue Erkenntnisse The survey reveals that the Swiss audience as a whole is interested in cinema and also seeks quality. Almost three quarters of those polled claim to like the cinema and go at least once a year, averaging two and a half times per citizen. This figure places Swiss viewers practically at the head of the European rankings, just slightly behind their French neighbours. Surprisingly, the documentary appears to be the preferred genre among the Swiss, before comedies (see Diagram 1). This unexpected result serves to reinforce the Swiss filmmaking industry and organisations in their willingness to maintain the long tradition which makes Switzerland a privileged place to direct and see documentary films. When viewers were questioned more specifically about Swiss cinema, it was noted that two out of three people have a positive opinion of it (see Diagram 2). Moreover, a significant part of those interviewed describe themselves as having no opinion, which leads to the belief that better access for the Swiss audience to its cinema would increase their interest even more. Incidentally, the survey reveals that no less than two thirds of those polled would like to receive more information on their country’s films. The tendency is emphasised even more among the categories of viewers who traditionally see few Swiss films: young people and French-speaking people (see Diagram 3). For the audience, it is hence not so much the quality of Swiss films which is lacking, but rather the access to traditional channels of communication. This result confirms the necessity of the existence of an organisation such as SWISS FILMS which serves as intermediary between Swiss production and the large audience. In response to the question concerning which genres Swiss writers should favour, it was found that the documentary and comedies were chosen by two thirds of the people questioned. In addition, it was noted that almost three quarters of those polled would wish to see more films on the unsung aspects of Switzerland (see Diagram 4). While many believe Swiss viewers are sensitive to topics which are typically Swiss, they are not afraid of the distorting mirror of the big screen when it shows them a new image of their country. On the contrary, it seems to demand of the filmmakers a vision both independent and rid of complexes which gives a new sense to the much discussed term of “swissitude”. HANDYMAN BY JÜRG EBE JEUNE HOMME BY CHRISTOPH SCHAUB 17 The Swiss audience – an unknown quantity reveals itself Le public suisse, un inconnu qui se dévoile Das Schweizer Publikum – neue Erkenntnisse The Swiss’ appreciation of comedy has been observed many times over in recent years. It was easy, therefore, to foresee the success of “Handyman” and of “Jeune Homme” at the beginning of the year. While the former skilfully combines the typical ingredients of Hollywood comedies, the latter takes a greater risk by touching the entire Swiss population with a subject which removes the linguistic barriers of the country. This effort, suitably outstanding in the Swiss panorama to be discovered, has borne its fruits, thus confirming the viewers’ interest for subjects and characters in which they recognise themselves. As for “Vitus”, this family film tells the eventful story of a gifted child, and has been able to benefit from a powerful subject and from the international notoriety of Bruno Ganz to attract a large audience. With their film “Grounding”, Michael Steiner and Tobias Fueter dare to take on the challenge of relying on a topic which is – strictly speaking – Swiss, to create a powerful work in which the national drama of the collapse of Swissair serves as a background for an innovative docu-thriller for the Swiss cinema. This again shows the audience’s interest for national topics when they are treated with talent. It is doubtless too early to talk of a sustained reinforcement of the market of Swiss films in the cinemas. It does not matter, however, as these simultaneous successes give a visibility which Swiss cinema has rarely benefited from in many decades. The media is increasingly interested in this phenomenon, thus providing potential viewers with the information they seem to demand. The study thus reveals a demanding, movie-going audience interested in its national cinema and eager to know it better, thereby contradicting the widespread view which would like that the majority of the Swiss are only interested in problems from abroad. The challenge of Swiss production – rich and heterogeneous – is therefore to find ways of attracting viewers and of creating for itself a specific place in the many cinemas. At the beginning of the year, certain filmmakers knew how to go down this route with success. Let us hope that their colleagues know how to follow suit – to move, touch, disturb and entertain the largest possible audience.
