COOPERATION BETWEEN THE HUNGARIAN POWER EXCHANGE
HUPX AND EPEX SPOT
Budapest/Paris/Leipzig, 17 December 2009 – HUPX, the Hungarian Power Exchange, and
EPEX Spot have decided to cooperate towards HUPX’s operational launch, envisaged in
July 2010. The scope of this cooperation encompasses trading systems and services. The
clearing activities will be handled by European Commodity Clearing AG (ECC), which
already provides clearing and settlement for all EPEX Spot markets.
The cooperation between HUPX and EPEX Spot is a major step towards the harmonisation
of power markets in Europe, which is strongly supported by market participants. HUPX will
actively contribute to a smooth functioning of the Hungarian power market by establishing a
reliable price reference and creating a ‘level playing field’ for trading in Hungary.
HUPX members will benefit from the experience and the high standards applied by EPEX
Spot in establishing and operating power spot markets. HUPX and EPEX Spot are
committed to deliver a trading solution which will provide market participants with liquidity,
operational security as well as reliable and transparent price formation.
Jean-François Conil-Lacoste, EPEX Spot Chief Executive Officer, stresses that “EPEX
Spot is willing to be a key facilitator in power spot market integration in Europe and the
establishment of HUPX as a major player in the region is a key element for the
harmonization of power market functioning.“ The experience of EPEX Spot as regional power
spot exchange will be very valuable for the Hungarian as well as for the regional power
market, in the perspective of further development with neighbouring power exchanges” said
Zsolt Bertalan, HUPX Chief Executive Officer. In addition he also mentioned that he also
strongly trusts that the expectations expressed by lots of market players for the
establishment of a power exchange will be fulfilled.
The date foreseen for HUPX’s launch is July 2010, subject to the necessary administrative
and regulatory approvals.

EPEX Spot and HUPX believe in well functioning markets and wish to continue to do their
best to get closer to a truly integrated European electricity market in close collaboration with
other Power Exchanges and all stakeholders.
EPEX Spot SE is a Paris-based company under European law (Societas Europae). EEX and
Powernext each hold 50 percent in the joint company, in which they integrated their entire
spot power trading activities. The product range of EPEX Spot SE encompasses spot power
trading for France, Germany/Austria and Switzerland. These countries account for more than
one third of the European power consumption.
HUPX Ltd. was established in May 2007 as a subsidiary company of MAVIR Hungarian
Transmission System Operator Company Ltd. to execute the operation of an efficient and
transparent power exchange. HUPX received its license to operate an organized power
market in Hungary from the national regulatory authority (Hungarian Energy Office) on 9th
April, 2009.

HONGROISE HUPX ET EPEX SPOT
Budapest/Paris/Leipzig, 17 Décembre 2009 – La Bourse de l’électricité hongroise HUPX et
EPEX Spot ont décidé de coopérer afin de faciliter le démarrage opérationnel d’HUPX prévu
en juillet 2010. Le champ de la coopération inclura les systèmes de négociation ainsi que
différents services. Les opérations de compensation seront effectuées par European
Commodities Clearing AG (ECC), la chambre de compensation utilisée par EPEX Spot sur
l’ensemble de ses marchés organisés.
La collaboration entre HUPX et EPEX Spot est une étape cruciale vers l’intégration des
bourses européennes de l’électricité demandée par les acteurs du marché. HUPX
contribuera activement au fonctionnement harmonieux du marché de l’électricité hongrois en
établissant une référence de prix fiable et en créant un environnement non-discriminatoire
propice au développement du « trading » en Hongrie.
Les membres d’HUPX bénéficieront de l’expérience et des standards reconnus d’EPEX Spot
en matière de création et d’opération de marchés organisés de l’électricité. HUPX et EPEX
Spot s’engagent à livrer une solution de négociation fournissant ainsi aux acteurs du marché
de la liquidité, de la sécurité opérationnelle et une formation de prix fiable et transparente.
Jean-François Conil-Lacoste, Président Directeur Général d’EPEX Spot, souligne
« qu’EPEX Spot souhaite jouer un rôle clé dans l’intégration du marché européen de
l’électricité et l’établissement de HUPX comme acteur régional majeur est une étape décisive
dans l’harmonisation des processus de fonctionnement de ce marché ». Zsolt Bertalan,
Président Directeur Général de HUPX, remarque que « l’expérience d’EPEX Spot en tant
que marché organisé régional de l’électricité sera précieuse pour le marché hongrois ainsi
que pour ceux des pays environnants dans la perspective d’un éventuel développement
commun. » De plus, M. Bertalan déclare espérer que les attentes des nombreux acteurs du
marché concernant la création d’une bourse de l’électricité en Hongrie seront satisfaites.
La date de lancement de HUPX est prévue pour juillet 2010, sous réserve de l’approbation
des régulateurs et des autorités nationales.

KOOPERATION ZWISCHEN DER UNGARISCHEN STROMBÖRSE
HUPX UND DER EPEX SPOT
Budapest/Paris/Leipzig, 17. Dezember 2009 – Die ungarische Strombörse HUPX und die
EPEX Spot werden beim Aufbau und operativen Start der HUPX – geplant im Juli 2010 –
zusammenarbeiten. Die Kooperation umfasst Handelssysteme und Dienstleistungen. Das
Clearing wird durch die European Commodity Clearing AG (ECC) erfolgen, die bereits
Clearing und Settlement für alle Märkte der EPEX Spot erbringt.
Die Kooperation zwischen der HUPX und EPEX Spot stellt einen wichtigen Schritt hin zur
Harmonisierung der Strommärkte in Europa dar, die von den Marktteilnehmern stark
unterstützt wird. Die HUPX wird mit der Etablierung zuverlässiger Referenzpreise und fairen
Wettbewerbsbedingungen für die Teilnehmer am Handel in Ungarn einen aktiven Beitrag
zum reibungslosen Funktionieren des ungarischen Strommarktes leisten.
Die HUPX Teilnehmer werden dabei von der Erfahrung und den hohen Normen der EPEX
Spot bei der Entwicklung sowie beim Betrieb von Stromspotmärkten profitieren. Die HUPX
und die EPEX Spot verpflichten sich, eine Lösung für den Handel zu schaffen, die den
Marktteilnehmern Liquidität, Betriebssicherheit sowie eine zuverlässige und transparente
Preisbildung garantiert.
Jean-François Conil-Lacoste, Chief Executive Officer der EPEX Spot, betont, dass „EPEX
Spot bereit sei, die Rolle eines Schlüsselakteurs bei der Integration der Stromspotmärkte in
Europa zu übernehmen und dass die Gründung der HUPX als wichtigem Akteur in der
Region ein wesentliches Element für die weitere Harmonisierung der Strommärkte bilde“.
„Die Erfahrungen der EPEX Spot als regionale Stromspotbörse werden für den ungarischen

Vorbehaltlich der notwendigen administrativen und regulatorischen Genehmigungen ist der
Start der HUPX für Juli 2010 geplant.

beitragen, die Schaffung eines integrierten europäischen Strommarktes in enger
Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Strombörsen sowie sämtlichen Interessengruppen weiter zu

Transmission System Operator Company Ltd. zum Betrieb einer effizienten und
transparenten Strombörse gegründet. Die HUPX erhielt am 9. April 2009 von der nationalen
Regulierungsbehörde (der ungarischen Energiebehörde) die Lizenz für den Betrieb eines
organisierten Strommarktes in Ungarn.
