Chers amis, chers collègues,
Au nom de l’Unité Mixte de Recherches 5648 / CIHAM (Histoire et archéologie des
mondes chrétiens et musulmans médiévaux) et de la European Association for Urban
History, j’ai le très grand plaisir de vous accueillir à Lyon à l’occasion du IXe Colloque
International d’Histoire Urbaine.
C’est un grand honneur pour notre centre de recherches d’héberger un colloque international d’une telle importance qui réunit environ 500 participants en provenance du
monde entier et dont le programme ne comprend pas moins de 57 sessions et tables rondes.
La richesse des communications devraient susciter des débats animés et fructueux et faire
surgir de nouvelles idées stimulantes pour de futures recherches.
Nous avons aussi prévu un programme d’activités qui devrait vous offrir des occasions
de discuter avec des amis de longue date et de vous en faire de nouveaux. J’espère que vous
trouverez aussi le temps de découvrir notre belle ville de Lyon.
Le colloque a été planifié et organisé par le comité local et un comité de coordination
composé de l’équipe de l’UMR 5648/CIHAM : Nicole Dusserre, Marie du Halgoüet,
Agnès Magron, Karyn Mercier et de moi même ainsi que de Raphaël Tournoy, notre informaticien. Je voudrais les remercier pour leur excellent travail ainsi que toute l’équipe
du colloque. Je voudrais également remercier le CNRS, l’École Normale Supérieure Lettres et Sciences Humaines, l’École Normale Supérieure de Lyon 2, l’Université de Lyon
2, La Mairie de Lyon, les autorités locales et régionales ainsi que toutes les autres institutions qui ont apporté leur soutien à ce IXe colloque international de l’EAUH.

Dear friends and colleagues,
On behalf of the Unité Mixte de Recherches 5648 / Centre Interuniversitaire d’Histoire
et d’Archéologie Médiévales and The European Association for Urban History it is my
great pleasure to welcome you all to Lyon and the Ninth International Conference on
Urban History.
It is an honour for our Institute to host such an important international meeting with
about 500 participants registered from all over the world. The programme includes no
less than 57 sessions and round-tables, hopefully they will encourage to lively and fruitful
discussions and introduce new stimulating ideas for future research. The social parts of
the conference offer you a good opportunity to relax together with new and old friends.
Besides, I hope that you will find some time to explore our beautiful city of Lyon.
The conference has been planned and organised by a local committee and a team of
coordination including the staff of the UMR 5648/CIHAM : Nicole Dusserre, Marie du
Halgoüet, Agnès Magron, Karyn Mercier, and myself with Raphaël Tournoy, as technical.
Thanks to them for their excellent work, and to the entire conference staff as well. Finally,
I want to thank the CNRS, The ENS-LSH, Lyon 2 University, The City of Lyon, Local
and regional authorities, and all other institutions and funds that have sponsored the
Ninth International Conference on Urban History.

EAUH, European Association for Urban History
L’association a été fondée en 1989 avec l’aide de l’Union européenne. Les conférences,
ou colloques, sont organisées tous les deux ans. Ces rencontres bisannuelles offrent un
forum pluridisciplinaire pour toutes les personnes s’intéressant aux différents aspects de
l’histoire de la ville : historiens, sociologues, géographes, anthropologues, historiens d’art,
architectes, économistes, écologistes, urbanistes, responsables territoriaux, archivistes,
conservateurs de musée. Jusqu’alors huit conférences ont été organisées...
The Association was established in 1989 with the support of European Union. Conferences
are organized every two years. These biannual conferences provides a multidisciplinary forum
for historians, sociologists, geographers, anthropologists, art and architectural historians,
economists, planners and all others working on different aspects of urban history. Up to now
eight conferences have been organized...

UMR 5648/CIHAM,
Histoire et archéologie des mondes chrétiens et musulmans médiévaux
Le CIHAM, Centre Interuniversitaire d’Histoire et d’Archéologie Médiévale, est
depuis 1994 l’UMR 5648 - Histoire et archéologie des mondes chrétiens et musulmans
médiévaux, une unité mixte de recherche associant le CNRS, l’Université Lumière
Lyon 2, l’EHESS et L’ENS-LSH.
Laboratoire rattaché à l’Institut des Sciences de l’Homme, il rassemble des archéologues,
des historiens et des littéraires dont les travaux sont plus particulièrement centrés sur la
région Rhône-Alpes et l’ensemble du monde méditerranéen, entre le Ve et le XVe siècle.
Leurs recherches actuelles privilégient l’organisation des espaces, les savoirs techniques
et la culture matérielle, les systèmes de pouvoir dans les monarchies et les villes, les
sociétés urbaines, la communication et la religion, la genèse et la circulation des textes et
des langues, et les écrits pragmatiques.
CIHAM, Interuniversitary Center of Medieval History and Archeology, became in 1994
the UMR 5648 « History and Archaeology of Christian and Islamic worlds in the Middle
Ages », a joint lab associating CNRS (National center of scientific research), Lumière Lyon 2
University, EHESS (School of advanced studies in social sciences) and ENS-LSH (School of
advanced studies in humanities).
This laboratory belongs to ISH (Humanities Sciences Institut) and brings together
archaeologists, historians, and literary specialists whose works are focused on whole
mediterranean societies. Now it is the only center in France joining specialists of the medieval
period (5th-15th centuries) who carry out research in Rhône-Alpes, Southern France, Italy,
Spain, Maghreb and Near East.The current research emphasizes land organization, technical
knowledge and material culture, power systems, urban societies, communication and religion,
literature.

Dans le cadre du partenariat «Pôles muséaux associés», le musée Gadagne – histoire de Lyon –
et le musée urbain Tony Garnier sont engagés dans une démarche de recherche scientifique et
de valorisation culturelle sur les territoires de la ville.
Depuis 2005, ils coproduisent la série documentaire «Cités culturelles» qui interroge la place
des mémoires et de la culture dans les projets de requalification urbaine, notamment dans les
quartiers industriels et ouvriers. Chaque documentaire est réalisé à partir d’archives et d’images
contemporaines, d’interviews d’habitants et d’acteurs du territoire, et de la réflexion d’un
scientifique «invité» qui répond au sociologue réalisateur, Alain Chenevez.
Il s’agit de concourir à une meilleure connaissance et interprétation de l’environnement urbain
en reconstruction, de mener une réflexion sur les interactions entre la ville qui se reconstruit sur
elle-même et son passé, sur les liens entre le projet urbain contemporain et la mémoire sociale.

Baraques : le bidonville de Gerland dans les années 1930

Les baraques de Gerland sont un souvenir invisible. Ces photographies, comme autant de
révélations, laissent entrevoir un monde disparu. Les aménageurs ont mis le feu aux baraques ;
la crise industrielle a détruit les usines. Du Gerland des années 1930 ne subsistent aujourd’hui
que quelques jardins ouvriers, proprement dessinés en contrebas des rues, quelques cheminées
d’usine, et une mémoire collective toujours vivace mais incertaine : Gerland produisait
beaucoup de biens manufacturés, mais bien peu d’images. Le discours modernisateur, initié
par la municipalité de Pradel dès les années 1950, participait de cette table rase mémorielle : il
fallait oublier les inondations, la boue, la tôle, le carton goudronné, les épidémies, la faim… il
fallait oublier les baraques de Gerland.
Les temps ont changé. Dans les discours politiques, le devoir de mémoire a remplacé l’exercice
de l’oubli. Les initiatives patrimoniales se multiplient, et les habitants y répondent par un
désir de souvenir toujours plus intense. Dans ce contexte, l’installation en septembre 2000 de
l’École normale supérieure Lettres et Sciences humaines au cœur de Gerland a donné lieu à une
singulière rencontre de l’histoire et de la mémoire. De jeunes historiens sont allés au devant des
anciens ouvriers du quartier pour recueillir et transmettre leurs souvenirs. La rencontre initiale
a d’abord produit un film. La rencontre continuée façonne aujourd’hui un livre. C’est qu’entretemps, la mémoire a changé de forme : aux témoignages parlés du film Attaches succèdent
aujourd’hui les images muettes du livre Baraques. Les fameuses baraques dont chaque témoin
du film nous parlait, sans pouvoir les montrer, sont désormais visibles. Ce livre est donc une
réponse. Les anciens ouvriers racontaient dans Attaches le monde masculin du travail et de
l’usine ; ces photographies témoignent d’un monde féminin, domestique et enfantin. Alors
que les ouvriers rappelaient la force de l’encadrement politique et syndical, on découvre ici la
vigueur de l’encadrement religieux et paroissial. Ainsi, Attaches et Baraques immigré.
Attaches :
Gerland. Quartier industriel, quartier ouvrier, quartier italien, Gerland est en train de subir de
très violentes mutations : les usines ferment, remplacées par des institutions d’enseignement
supérieur et de recherche. Attaches, c’est l’histoire d’un quartier en rupture, l’histoire d’une
usine qui fabriquait des armatures pour le béton, et qui a fait travailler la plupart des jeunes du
quartier. C’est aussi tout ce qui relie des citadins à leur quartier, des travailleurs à leur usine, des
émigrés italiens à leur pays natal.
L’histoire du film. Tout est parti d’une rencontre, en octobre 1998. Un bref séjour à Lyon, à
l’occasion d’une manifestation contre Charles Millon et l’alliance avec le FN. Un détour par
Gerland, sur le site de la future ENS Lettres. L’usine MURE, tout juste désertée, est encore
debout. Joseph Réa, le gardien des lieux, nous raconte son arrivée à Lyon dans les années 1950,
sa vie passée dans cette usine, sa douleur de la voir bientôt détruite. À notre besoin de savoir et
de souvenir, les anciens ouvriers de l’usine ont répondu par un désir de raconter, de transmettre
et d’expliquer.
L’équipe de réalisation. Cinq anciens élèves de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure Fontenay / SaintCloud, tous agrégés d’histoire. L’Ecole quitte la région parisienne en septembre 2000 pour être
délocalisée à Lyon, dans le quartier de Gerland. Guidés par l’émotion plutôt que par l’institution,
nous avons voulu inscrire la nouvelle Ecole dans son quartier, mais surtout inviter ses futurs
élèves à percevoir et peut-être même à rencontrer leurs nouveaux voisins. Si l’Histoire est belle,
si elle est bien une science humaine, si sa pratique est bien celle d’une rencontre d’homme à

homme et pas seulement la confrontation d’un chercheur à son terrain, alors Attaches, film
d’historiens, est aussi un film d’histoire.

Départ de Lyon par l’autoroute en direction de Mâcon ; arrivée à Cluny à 09h30. Avant la visite
guidée de Cluny, découverte du Musée d’Art et d’Archéologie dont l’accès est libre avec le billet
d’entrée à l’abbaye. Il abrite des œuvres marquantes de la sculpture médiévale provenant de
l’abbatiale et du bourg monastique.
Puis, à 10h15, visite guidée en anglais de l’abbaye. C’est en 910 qu’est fondée l’abbaye bénédictine
de Cluny. Maison mère de plus de mille monastères, elle rayonne durant tout le Moyen Âge sur
l’Europe occidentale. L’église de « Cluny III » achevée au XIIe siècle restera longtemps la plus
vaste de la Chrétienté. On peut admirer aujourd’hui la superbe élévation du transept de cette
gigantesque abbatiale ainsi que le cloître et les bâtiments conventuels du XVIIIe siècle.
Déjeuner au restaurant « l’Auberge du cheval Blanc » à Cluny.
L’après-midi, nous prenons la direction de Berzé.
A 15h00, visite guidée en anglais de la chapelle aux Moines, bâtie sur un éperon rocheux dominant
le joli paysage du Mâconnais. La décoration picturale de cet édifice roman, construit par les
moines de Cluny, réalise un parcours artistique, né à Byzance et abouti à Cluny. La palette
colorée est éblouissante et la beauté des fonds, bleu inaltérable du précieux minéral lapis-lazuli
est exceptionnelle. La Chapelle des Moines était le sanctuaire privé d’Hugues de Semur, abbé
de Cluny. Sa visite est indispensable pour découvrir les seules fresques, bien conservées, capables
d’illustrer le décor disparu de l’église abbatiale de Cluny III. Le maître de Berzé a manifesté des
talents peu ordinaires qui portent à sa perfection un art né aux sources de la chrétienté orientale.
Puis, sur le chemin du retour, arrêt dans une cave pour dégustation de vins du Mâconnais.
Retour par l’autoroute et arrivée à Lyon dans la soirée.

guided tour of Cluny, discover the Museum of Art & Archaeology, admission to which is free with the
ticket to the abbey. It contains a number of remarkable mediaeval sculptures from the abbey church
and monastery village.
Then at 10.15am, english-guided tour of the Cluny abbey. The Benedictine abbey of Cluny was founded
in 910. Throughout the Middle Ages, it influenced Western Europe and, as mother house, ruled over
more than a thousand monasteries. The church of “Cluny III” was finished during the XIIth century and
for a long time was the largest church in Christendom. Today, we can admire the magnificent elevation
of the transept of this huge abbey church, the cloisters and the XVIIIth century monastery buildings

On the afternoon, we will take the direction of Berzé.
At 3 pm, english-guided tour of the “chapelle aux Moines” (Monks chapel), built on a rocky promontory
overlooking the beautiful landscape of Mâconnais. The pictorial decoration of this Romanesque chapel,
built by the monks of Cluny, covers an artistic route starting in Byzance and ending in Cluny. The
palette of colours is dazzling and the beauty of the grounds, the permanent blue of the precious lapisp. 73
lazuli ore, is exceptional. The Monks’ Chapel was the private sanctuary of Hugues de Semur, Abbot of

Return by the highway, and arrival in Lyon in the evening.

Prendre la navette juqu’à la gare de La Part-Dieu, puis le métro en direction Gerland
jusqu’à la station Debourg. La navette quitte l’aéroport toutes les 20 min et le trajet
jusqu’à l’arrêt Part-Dieu dure environ 40 min (première arrivée à l’aéroport à 5h35 tous
les jours, dernier départ de l’aéroport à 23h40 7j sur 7, correspondances métro à tous
les arrêts).
Take the shuttle to La Part-Dieu metro station, then the metro heading to Gerland. Get off
at the stop «Debourg». The shuttle leaves the airport every twenty minutes and it takes about
40 mn to reach the station Part-Dieu (first arrival at Lyon airport at 5:35am everyday, last
departure from the airport at 11:40pm everyday, subway connection at every stop).
