The frequent postponing of rate rises by the FED has increased uncertainty, and thus volatility. Even after the first rise, initiated in december, markets remain in the dark as for the next ones. It is worth summarizing the different sector’s behavior this past year. First, treasuries have surprised us at the beginning of 2015 by diving 10 years yields under 2% for a few months. All in all, they claimed positive returns for 2015 although they lost ground at the end of the year. Second, based on the CDX IG Index, investment grade yields have remained mostly unchanged. On the other hand, High Yield bonds have suffered much loosing, on a spread basis, no less then 175 b.p. Third, Coco’s finished the year in disorder although this sector remains the best performer due mainly to its high coupon. On average, their total return has been close to 5%. Lastly, convertibles have registered irregular scores, some of which, such as the Alcatel or the Ampliter progressing sharply in sympathy with their underlying stock. Oil convertibles, such as Maurel, have suffered terribly from the sector’s fall. A closer look reveals the rout of all oil and materials’ bonds, as well as Brazilian and Russian bonds. Falls of 10 to 30 points were common ground. In Sedec Dollar bonds, the total weight of oil, materials, and emerging bonds was close to 15% which inflicted meaningful losses. In retrospective, we are rather surprised to have hung on to the 0% performance. The good news, since we do need one is that the funds’ yield has risen to 4.30% which remains honorable provided that no bond will default. In december, Sedec Dollar Bonds retreated by 1.06% for a –0.56% YTD.
