Rapid Damage Assessment Mission to West Sumatra, Indonesia
Rapid Damage Assessment Mission to West Sumatra, Indonesia On 30 September 2009 a tragic earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale struck West Sumatra, leading to the loss of at least 1100 human lives and damaging hundreds of buildings in the harbour city of Padang. CER supported the rapid damage assessment of cultural heritage in West Sumatra, carried out by the Indonesian Heritage Trust working in collaboration with local partners and volunteers. Thank you very much for the support Hasti Tarekat, Board Member of the Indonesian Heritage Trust Information: A major challenge CER supported the Indonesian Heritage Trust to assess the damages to heritage and identify the conservation needs and priorities in the cities of Padang and Pariaman following the tragic earthquake of 30 September that claimed at least 1100 lives and devastated public infrastructure and tens of thousands of homes. Within one week of the disaster, 5.000 -euro was made available to enable the Indonesian Heritage Trust to start work immediately. The rapid assessment was carried out by a team of qualified professionals and volunteers from West Sumatra and elsewhere in Indonesia from 10-October. Out of 244 heritage buildings assessed, the team identified 228 damaged heritage sites including 10 buildings which require priority intervention. In 2010 the Indonesian Heritage Trust will follow up with rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts thanks to the support of CER. A major challenge for the Trust also to raise awareness amongst the local authorities and the community about the value of cultural heritage and its potential for contributing to recovery of the disasterstruck community, and thereby overcome the tendency to pull down historic buildings and build modern constructions in their place.
