più mosso Federation of Canadian Music Festivals La Fédération canadienne des festivals de musique October 2009 Opus 10, No. 3 ISSN 1492-2959 più mosso It is with great pleasure and excitement (and some trepidation…) that I begin my two-year term as President of FCMF. I’ve been around FCMF for a long time, and have seen it go through many incarnations over the years — it has evolved into an interesting and dynamic organization! We are all especially indebted to (now Past President) Dianne Johnstone, for her fours years of solid, hard work and leadership as President, and for her many years of interest and support before that. During her tenure, FCMF moved forward on many different fronts, and her shoes will be very hard to fill! Congratulations and thanks to the Saskatchewan Host Committee, the many volunteers and especially the local Saskatchewan festivals who collaborated to make the 2009 Saskatoon National Music Festival and conference such a huge success and a great time for delegates and competitors alike. Special kudos and thanks go to Joanne Messer, Co-Chair of the Host Committee (and congratulations on receiving the 2009 Volunteer of the Year Award!), Penny Joynt, Co-chair, and Theresa Brost, President of SMFA—it couldn’t have been done without you! The work that volunteers do, and the contributions made by donors and sponsors across the country are so important now, but will have much bigger implications down the road. The National Music Festival is the culmination of a huge amount of work on the part of volunteers at the host sites, but it doesn’t start there. The real work begins back at the local festivals across the country, and as we speak, those festivals are gearing up for the 2010 season. There are myriad hours of work by volunteers, administrators, boards, teachers and parents so that young musicians can get a chance to perform in public. Many of the competitors who will be at the National Music Festival in the years ahead will be starting out for the first time at their local festivals this year. Eventually, some of these young performers will find themselves eligible for Provincial level competitions, and after that at the National Music Festival, the highest level of classical music festival competition in Canada. ..cont’d on page 2 ...suite à la page 2 PLEASE JOIN US NEXT YEAR IN MONTREAL! FOUNDERS OF THE FEDERATION OF CANADIAN MUSIC FESTIVALS McGill University in Montreal will be home to the 2010 National Music Festival from August 13-15! Located in a beautiful area of Montreal, all performances will take place in the Schulich School of Music. Competitors and delegates will be housed in a new residence just a short walk from practice rooms and performance venues. For more information, please visit our website at www.fcmf.org or contact the FCMF office. We hope to see many of you there next August. Make sure you enter your local festival in order to qualify for the 2010 National Music Festival! The purpose of this designation is to retain the names of those individuals who are worthy of memory. These outstanding festival leaders committed themselves to the music festival movement in Canada and, by their service to the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals and the National Music Festival, have enriched the lives of countless young musicians. Marlene Cherry Richard W. Cooke Reg Hugo George S. Mathieson Cora Molstad E.G. “Ted” Pridham continue to enjoy music, and in the future they will become the supporters of the Arts in their communities. What a great renewable resource for our country that volunteers, sponsors and donors are fostering! We are thrilled to be going to Montréal and McGill University next August for the 2010 AGM and Conference, and National Music Festival. For those who don’t know, the Conference takes up four days of intense meetings by volunteer delegates from across Canada, and deals with just about every aspect of music festivals imaginable. The National Music Festival competitions follow immediately. Thank you, to all the 2009 delegates who worked so hard in Saskatoon! It was also rewarding to see so many new faces around the conference table, along with the fresh ideas and contributions they brought. Another wonderful, renewable resource! It will be good for the many smaller music festivals in Québec to have the National Festival come to their province. We are grateful to be working with Tom Davidson at McGill, and it should be known that he has worked hard behind the scenes for many years, following in the tradition of Jan Simons, to strengthen the presence of FCMF in Québec and to encourage the fledgling organizations that are there. As music festivals continue to grow and prosper in Québec, we all benefit! To everyone reading this newsletter: you too can help the music shine! There are many options: take out a membership, make a tax deductible contribution to our Trust Fund, donate any amount to our various donor levels, or join our ’39 Campaign (there is a form inserted in this newsletter, or one can be downloaded online at www.fcmf.org). I especially invite all adjudicators, who are such a valuable component of music festivals across the country, to consider making a contribution to our ’39 campaign. A portion of that $39 can be redirected back to the local festival(s) at which you adjudicate. And I am challenging adjudicators this year to consider submitting a ’39 form for every festival they adjudicate— fabulous PR and you’ll be helping festivals across the country! I ask everyone, to please take the time to thank and support our Supporters— their names can be found throughout this newsletter, and the National Festival could not be held without their contributions. Last but not least, I want to thank all members of the Executive and Cindy Rublee for their hard work over the past year, and for their insights and efforts already this year! 2010 is going to be a great year with their support and guidance. Joining Directors Rhéal Fournier, NB and Jerry Lonsbury, AB, I also take great pleasure in welcoming newly-elected Director Marilyn Wiwcharuk, BC, and Treasurer Mary Ross, AB. I also congratulate Pam Allen, ON, on being elected Vice President of FCMF! The Board of Directors is a great team— contact information is found elsewhere in this newsletter, and I urge anyone to contact any of us at any time if there are any questions or suggestions! Very best wishes for an exciting festival year! I look forward to seeing you in Montréal 2010! It’s the same as little league baseball. There is this huge support structure. I felt, as a kid, what I did with the piano was a collaboration by a lot of people. I continue to feel that way.” Jon Kimura Parker, pianist, in an interview with Mike Youds of the Kamloops Daily News, October 31, 2008. “Coming up in Ottawa as a budding classical pianist, the Kiwanis Music Festival...provided me with a unique opportunity to perform numerous times at a very young age in front of audiences and, equally importantly, to be critiqued at a high level by professional adjudicators. This experience proved especially invaluable as I continued my studies in the highly-charged environment of Indiana University and the Manhattan School of Music, before going on to pursue an active career as a jazz pianist/composer and to record numerous CD’s as leader. Today, I look back fondly at the experience as one of the key tools that set me forth on my ultimate career path, and I thank the Festival for it!” D.D. Jackson Juno Award-winning Pianist/Composer Greeting friends from a different province at the competitor briefing Do my shoes match my dress?? Relief after the competition is over! Winning first place in the inaugural Florine Després Elementary School Choirs Class last year was an incredible experience for our entire school as well as the the wider school community and indeed the Toronto District School Board. To have a first-rate standard to adhere to is so valuable and helps us all pace each other on the road to excellence. Your support will help our children to realize that quality music is an important part of our Canadian fabric. Mitch Bondy Vocal Music Teacher, Northlea Elementary and Middle School Performing in the Kiwanis Music Festival is an invaluable and unique experience for a young music student. My many years of participation helped to shape my early musical education, and gave me opportunities to perform that I would not otherwise have had. Please support all festivals generously to make them continue long into the future!” Angela Hewitt, pianist Back inside after a quick dash in the rain to the zoo at the Saskatchewan Forrestry Farm on Host Night. “My time at the National Music Festival this year in Saskatoon was a valuable and rewarding experience. Not only did I have the opportunity to perform at a competition of high standard, but I also had the chance to meet incredibly talented musicians from across Canada. This has provided me with many wonderful opportunities for future career endeavors, such as chamber music and solo concerts. There was a true sense of camaraderie at Nationals and a friendly spirit; competitors bonded over the few days we had together and became good friends. It was so exciting to meet other musicians with a similar vision and to be surrounded with such a high standard of excellence. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to represent my province this year, and it was truly an honour. FCMF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CINDY RUBLEE STEPS DOWN On October 4, 2009, The Executive of FCMF received an unexpected email from FCMF Executive Director, Cindy Rublee, announcing that she had decided not to renew her contract as Executive Director of FCMF as of November 1, 2009. It was a very nice, very positive email about her experiences over the past four years with good suggetions for the years ahead, but indicated that she had decided it was time to move on. I chatted with Cindy by phone after getting the email, and she reiterated that there were a great many personal reasons for her decision, but that she had enjoyed working with delegates across the country and with the Executive under President Dianne Johnstone. She said the decision had been difficult, but she had thought about it a great deal, discussed it with her family, and that her decision was final. With regret, I accepted it. The FCMF Executive has stepped up and each member has taken on specific tasks to ensure a smooth transition of the operational side of the business of FCMF in the interim, and I am very grateful to each of them. They have a surprisingly wide range of skill sets and talents to take on these jobs and each one has willingly jumped in so that the ongoing business of FCMF will move ahead smoothly. Preparations for Montréal 2010 are also well under way, thanks to Tom Davidson. Cindy has offered to help wherever she can, to make the transition smooth and to get the new ED settled and underway however she can. We’re very grateful to Cindy for her work over the past four years, and her offer of whatever help is needed during the transition. Overall, though we regret Cindy’s departure, we’re in good hands on the road ahead. It is our intent to contract a new Executive Director of FCMF as soon as possible, and for this, we need your help. Time is of the essence. The application process and details of the job, etc. will be available shortly. The Executive is going ahead with our annual fall meeting at the end of October and we will be putting the finishing touches on the entire process at that time. We would appreciate it if you would pass the word along to whomever you think might be eligible, that the position of Executive Director of FCMF is now open and that we will be accepting applications starting in early November. Details will be posted on the FCMF website: www.fcmf.org as soon as we have them in place. In the interim, if there are any questions during this transition process, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. The email address for FCMF is also changing to: [email protected]. This should be in place in the next few days. Also - as of November 1st - the temporary number for the FCMF office will be 1-888-307-6632. I hope you’ll take a minute to email Cindy, to thank her for her efforts and friendship over the past four years, and to send your best wishes for the days ahead as she moves in her new direction. I know she will do well at whatever she chooses, and I’m sure you’ll agree she has our full support. From left to right: Richard Burton, SK, David Klassen, Andrew Rampton and Somer Kenny from Manitoba 38 Celebration! The 38 Celebration was a special fundraising project to recognize the 38th consecutive National Music Festival. Each of these supporters donated $38 (or a multiple of $38). Of the $38, $15 was directed back to their provincial or local music festival if requested, thereby strengthening the festival movement across the country.
