Materials:
Deluxe Worsted Magic
1 ball, 100% Wool,
220 yds /220 m per 100g.
US size 9/5.25mm needles
US size 6/4.25mm Double
Pointed Needles.
Darning Needle.
Size
before fulling 16”x 9”
after 14 ½” x 7 ¾”
Gauge: This piece was
knitted loosely. The gauge of
the piece is not important as
it will change when fulled.
A rectangle is the desired
shape for this project.
Method
To make the Purse
Cast on 36 stitches on to the larger needles.
Row 1: Knit across row.
Row 2: K4, purl 28, k4.
Repeat these 2 rows for 74 rows.
Row 75, 76 and 77: Knit across.
Bind off.
To make the I cord for the strap and
embellishment.
Using a double pointed needle cast on 4 sts.
Without turning the needle around, * slide the
knitting to the opposite end of the needle.
The working yarn will be on what appears to be
the wrong side of your work, knit the 4 sts.
-The first stitch created after sliding along the
needle may appear very loose, you can control
this a little by knitting the first stitch quite firmly,
don’t worry, the stitches even out. If it bothers
you to see a ladder on the side of the I cord, when
you have finished the cord stretch it. Rolling it
back and forth in the palms of your hands, will
even out the stitches a little.

-Repeat from * until the cord is 70 inches long.
Knit the length which will suit you best. (see
suggestions for handle)
Make I cord Loop
Join the ends of the I cord into a loop as follows:
Do not cast off, cut yarn 10” long, thread the cast
on tail thru the needle and then insert the cast on
end into the cord at the working end.
Now re-thread the needle with the cast-off tail and
sew each live stitch onto the I cord just above the
cast on row.
This is a modified Kitchener graft. Put this loop to
one side until the pouch is ready to embellish.
Make Pouch
After fulling, blocking and drying, fold the caston edge toward the cast off edge to approx 3 ½”
deep, stitch along the sides using whip or cross
stitch. (If you don’t get the same dimensions, this
fold is just less than 1/3rd the height of the
rectangle)
Block Pouch
I fulled the rectangle of knitting by washing with a
load of blue jeans in warm water. (I didn’t let it
agitate or felt much) The stitches on this piece still
show. While damp block the piece.
To do this; pin at the corners and along the sides to
a piece of poster board or cardboard. The shape
you pin to the board is the shape you will get when
the piece is dry.
Apply I cord decoration and strap
Following the diagram shown below, or your own
design, pin and sew part of the I cord loop in
place, th ermeinder is the strap or handle of the
bag.
Sew the I cord securely at the top of the front flap
as it will bear the weight of the bag.
Add any other embellishments desired. E.g.
Use a button to secure the flap or leave the design
uninterrupted. Add a small button inside the bag
to secure the pouch or stitch in a zipper.
Wear your bag across the body, over the shoulder
or make the I cord length shorter for a wrist strap.
