SAINT AGNES CHURCH
From Drew Haissig, seminarian: Allow me to say a little
about myself. I’m a seminarian of the Diocese of Arlington,
though I’m not originally from Northern Virginia. I moved
around a bit growing up, as my dad was in the Army and
then the Navy. My parents currently reside in North
Carolina, and I have an older sister in Illinois. I graduated
from Franciscan University of Steubenville and from there
entered seminary at Theological College at The Catholic
University of America where I’ve completed four years of
studies and formation and have two more to go. I enjoy my
classes at CUA, as well as living with a community of
almost ninety men studying for the priesthood at
Theological College. But a fundamental part of my
discernment and formation has been the opportunity to get
involved in parishes, schools and hospitals. I’m grateful for
the opportunity to get involved here at St. Agnes, and I’m
looking forward to getting to know you all better in these
next two years as I assist at the Parish and School.
M ASS I NTENTIONS
Sept
Oct. 4th is the memorial of 13th century St. Francis of
Assisi, a deacon, who founded the many religious
communities known as the Franciscans that follow his
approach to prayer, penance, and poverty. He is known as a
lover of nature and animals. As such, there will be a special
Blessing of Animals (and their owners) on Fri., Oct. 4,
3:30 PM, weather permitting. Students from St. Agnes
School, public schools, other private schools, and homeschools are invited, along with other parishioners who may
want to join us. Pets, such as dogs, must be on a leash. All
pets must be under the control of the owner. Please, no
animals which are dangerous or could be harmful to others.
Bring your pet and gather on the lawn between the rectory
and the church. Anyone from St. Agnes School who will be
coming must first go through
the car pool line and then park
in the Parish Center parking lot.
As always, please follow the
directions of those directing the
car pool lines at the school. This
blessing is to help us remember
the goodness that comes to us
through God’s creation.

Pope’s Intentions for October:
A mandatory Confirmation practice is today, Sun.,
Sept. 29, at 2:00 PM in the church. A parent or sponsor
should accompany the confirmation candidate.
General Intention: That those feeling so crushed by life that
they wish to commit suicide may sense the nearness of
God’s love.
The Sacrament of Confirmation is Sun., Oct. 6 at
2:00 PM. All Confirmation candidates and their sponsors
should be at the school gym with their robes no later
than 1:00 PM.
Missionary Intention: That the celebration of World
Mission Day may help all Christians realize that we are not
only receivers but proclaimers of God’s Word.
Please pray for our 8th grade students who are preparing
for the Sacrament of Confirmation. The confirmandi
(candidates for Confirmation) have begun their novena
(9 days of prayer) of the Litany of the Saints, to pray to
all of their patron saints.

A prayer to our Guardian Angel.
Simple for a child to learn. Profound
for an adult to pray.
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
to whom God's love commits me here.
Ever this day be at my side,
to light and guard,
to rule and guide.

B ROTHER D ENNIS & A SSOCIATES
(P ARISH S OCIAL O UTREACH )
“Oh, how I would like a poor Church,
and for the poor.” Pope Francis spoke
these words back in March, in the
early days of his papacy. Brother
Dennis and Associates this week are
donating $1,600 to the Edmundite
Missions, a Catholic organization that
has been for the poor since 1937. The
Missions are part of the Society of Saint Edmund, a small
Catholic order of priests and brothers who seek to serve as
Jesus did, and make known His love by basing their lives
on humility, service and love for the poor.
Unlike many larger orders, the Society of Saint Edmund
doesn’t have missions or missionaries in every corner of the
world. In fact, Edmundite Missions are found in just one
corner of the United States: central Alabama, the poorest
region of one of the poorest states in the country. And their
work is among the poorest people of this region: AfricanAmericans. But for these people and this region, there is
nothing small about what the Edmundite Missions do. For
example, from July of last year to this July, they served
more than 110,000 meals and distributed over 146 tons of
food to the homebound and families. Through outreach
ministries, they provide housing repairs to families and the
elderly. They help pay utility bills and purchase small
refrigerators, heaters and fans for those in need. The
Missions also play a key educational role in the region.
Children, adults and seniors receive help developing their
talents at learning centers and outreach programs
established by the Missions.
The motto of the Edmundite Missions is “Do the best we
can, with what we have, to help those most in need.” It is
not going out on a limb to say that Pope Francis would like
their work, as well as their motto. For more information,
visit their website at WWW . EDMUNDITEMISSIONS . ORG .
What wonderful majesty! What stupendous condescension!
O sublime humility! That the Lord of the whole universe,
God and the Son of God, should humble himself like this
under the form of a little bread, for our salvation.
— St. Francis of Assisi
