The Perfect Tense • • • Is used to say what you have done or what you did. eg. “I have eaten”, “I ate”. Is used for actions which are now completed. Is a compound tense in French, ie. it is always made up of three parts; the subject pronoun (I, you, he etc) + the auxiliary verb (avoir or être) + the past participle. TO FORM THE PERFECT TENSE • Regular Verbs ER VERBS: Knock the “er” off the infinitive, then add “é”. eg. J’ai joué, tu as regardé, il a oublié IR VERBS: Knock the “ir” off the infinitive, then add “i”. eg. nous avons fini, vous avez choisi, ils ont rempli These use “avoir” as their auxiliary verb RE VERBS: Knock the “re” off the infinitive, then add “u”. eg. elles ont vendu, j’ai perdu, tu as attendu. 3 These use “avoir” as their auxiliary verb Irregular Verbs Here are some of the most common irregular past participles: faire voir prendre comprendre apprendre devoir avoir recevoir courir pouvoir boire vouloir to do to see to take to understand to learn to have to to have to receive to run to be able to to drink to want fait vu pris compris appris dû eu reçu couru pu bu voulu lire croire être dire écrire ouvrir offrir mettre suivre to read to believe to be to say to write to open to offer to put to follow lu cru été dit écrit ouvert offert mis suivi 13 verbs take “être” as their auxiliary. These are: Descendre Retourner Aller Partir Entrer Rester Sortir Venir Arriver Naître Monter Mourir Tomber to descend to return to go to leave to enter to stay to go out to come to arrive to be born to climb to die to fall descendu(e)(s) retourné(e)(s) allé(e)(s) parti(e)(s) entré(e)(s) resté(e)(s) sorti(e)(s) venu(e)(s) arrivé(e)(s) né(e)(s) monté(e)(s) mort(e)(s) tombé(e)(s) + verbs which are contain these verbs, eg rentrer (to come home), devenir (to become), revenir (to come back) The past participles of verbs which take “être” must “agree” with the pronouns. eg. il est parti elle est partie nous sommes parties ils sont partis elles sont parties This could also just be an “s”, depending on whether the “we” is masculine or feminine plural This very rarely makes a difference to the pronunciation of the past participle. The only time it does is with the word “mort”. When this is masculine singular and plural, the “t” is silent; when it’s feminine singular or plural, it’s pronounced. 4 Reflexive verbs also take “être” in the past tense. The past participles “agree” with the subject pronouns in the same way as the “DRAPERS VAN MMT” past participles. eg. Je me suis levé(e) Tu t’es reveillé(e) Il s’est habillé Elle s’est mariée On s’est brossé(e)(s) les dents Nous nous sommes disputé(e)s Vous vous êtes lavé(e)(s) Ils se sont couchés Elles se sont amusées I got up You woke up He got dressed She got married One brushed ones teeth We argued You got washed They went to bed They had a good time The Negative To form the negative, the “ne” goes before the auxiliary verb and the “pas” goes after. eg. Je n’ai pas vu Catherine. Il n’est pas parti à 9 heures. When using a reflexive verb in the perfect tense, the “ne” goes before the reflexive pronoun and the “pas” goes after the auxiliary verb. eg. Je ne me suis pas amusée Nous ne nous sommes pas disputés The Imperfect Tense • • • Is used when describing ongoing actions in the past. Should be used to translate English phrases “I used to do” and “I was doing”. Should be used for descriptions, eg “The house was small”, “She had brown eyes.” TO FORM THE IMPERFECT TENSE Regular Verbs: • • • Take the “nous” form of the present tense. Knock off the “ons” ending. Add the following endings: j’allais tu allais il / elle / on allait nous allions vous alliez ils / elles allaient (Silent “ent”) 5 Irregular Verbs: There is only one irregular verb; this is être (the present tense “nous” form of être is sommes, therefore there is no “ons” to knock off to form the imperfect stem.) The stem for être is “ét” eg j’étais tu étais il / elle / on était nous étions vous étiez ils / elles étaient Reflexive Verbs: These work in exactly the same way; you just need to include the reflexive pronoun. eg. je me levais, il s’habillait The Negative: The “ne” comes before the verb and the “pas” goes after it. eg. je n’étais pas contente. elle ne regardait pas la télé. The Negative with Reflexive Verbs: Here, the “ne” comes before the reflexive pronoun and the “pas” comes after it eg. tu ne te lavais pas les cheveux. The Immediate Future Tense • Is directly translatable from English as “I am going to do”. TO FORM THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE TENSE Use the present tense of “aller” + the infinitive. 6 eg. il va aimer nous allons aller elle va acheter je vais attendre Reflexive Verbs: Form the immediate future tense in exactly the same way, but make sure you change the reflexive pronoun to match the subject pronoun. eg. ils vont se marier je vais m’amuser tu vas te reposer The Negative: Put “ne” before the verb and “pas” after it. eg. il ne va pas aimer ils ne vont pas se marier nous n’allons pas aller je ne vais pas m’amuser elle ne va pas acheter The Future Tense • Translates into English as “I will / shall do”.
