REGULAR VERBS ENDING IN “-RE” A number of important verbs end in “-re” : vendre=to sell attendre=to wait for rendre=to give back entendre=to hear répondre=to reply descendre=to take/bring down perdre=to lose The present tense is formed by removing the “-re” from the infinitive and adding : je = ‘-s’ nous = ‘-ons’ e.g. je vends nous vendons tu = ‘-s’ vous = ‘-ez’ tu vends vous vendez il/elle/on = ‘-’ ils/elles = ‘-ent’ il/elle/on vend ils/elles vendent The perfect tense is formed by changing the “-re” of the infinitive into “-u”. e.g. j’ai vendu nous avons vendu tu as vendu vous avez vendu il/elle/on vendu ils/elles ont vendu VOCABULARY : les parents (m.)-parents la musique-the music la mère-the mother dépendre de-to depend on le frère-the brother la maison-the house cela-that défendre-to defend, to forbid Translate : 1. The following “-re” verbs are IRREGULAR, taking a slightly different pattern in the present tense and a very different pattern in the perfect tense. All these verbs contain “prendre”: prendre=to take, comprendre=to understand, apprendre=to learn/to teach, surprendre=to surprise, entreprendre=to undertake, se méprendre=to make a mistake, réapprendre=to learn again. PRESENT : PERFECT : je prends nous prenons j’ai pris nous avons appris tu prends vous prenez tu as compris vous avez entrepris il/elle/on prend ils/elles prennent il/elle/on a surpris ils/elles ont réappris Change the present to the past and vice versa : 1. Est-ce que vous prenez le train? 2. J’apprends le français. 3. Avez-vous appris la langue? 4. Avez-vous compris? 5. Tu surprends souvent ton professeur? OTHER IRREGULAR “-RE” VERBS : The following irregular “-re” verbs have a similar pattern to that of the “prendre” group but the consonant is doubled in the ‘nous’, ‘vous’ and ‘ils/elles’ forms : mettre=to put, permettre=to permit, promettre=to promise, soumettre=to submit omettre=to omit, remettre=to put back, admettre=to admit, transmettre=to transmit PRESENT : PERFECT : je mets nous mettons j’ai mis nous avons soumis tu mets vous mettez tu as permis vous avez omis il/elle/on met ils/elles mettent il/elle/on a promis ils/elles ont remis VOCABULARY : le matin-the morning l’annonce(f.)-the advertisement tôt-soon promettre de-to promise to l’enfant(m.+f.)-the child la lettre-the letter tard-late déjà-already le projet-the project/plan le dictionnaire-the dictionary rentrer-to return permettre de-to allow to Note the construction with “défendre” and “permettre” : Je défends à Paul de parler.=I forbid Paul to speak.
