Unremitting preparation
As the hours go by, tension is rising in the paddocks of the Pro Kart Raceland circuit of Wackersdorf for
the first round of the World KF1 Championship (the top category of Karting) and the single-event of the
European KZ1 and KZ2 Championsnhips (divisions 1 and 2 of gearbox karts). During two days Drivers
and their Teams have been relentlessly working. They all had but one goal : finding the best set-ups for
qualifying practice scheduled for Saturday morning for KF1 and KZ1, while Francesco Celenta has already
proved fastest in KZ2.
During these two days there have already been many comments about a young man, Nyck De Vries
(Zanardi/Parilla/Bridgestone). Reigning World Champion, the Dutchman is undoubtedly the man to beat
and he has regularly been among the fastest in free practice. “Nyck is obviously very quick.”, admitted the
Belgian Sébastien Bailly (Kosmic/Vortex/Brigestone), vice-European KF2 Champion last year. “But it is up
to us to work so as to get closer to him. With this new 5-event World Championship, it is important to be
both fast and regular. In the past an incident in a decisive Final could completely jeopardise a weekend.
This time, it is the strongest throughout the season who should get the title.”
Focused on youngsters, the new World Championship has in particular appealed to Alexander Albon
(Intrepid/TM/Bridgestone), last year’s winner of the World Cup and European Champion in KF3 (the
Junior category for 13-15 year old Drivers). “I am one of the youngest”, explained the 15 year-old Briton.
“But I don’t think it is a real disadvantage. What I risk lacking is some experience, but it is precisely in
a such a Championship that one can gain some. Free practice revealed that Competitors are very close.
It will therefore be necessary to be competitive in the qualifying session on Saturday morning. I hope I
can ! ”
This World Championship will also enable Finland’s Matias Köykkä (CRG/Maxter/Bridgestone) to continue
his progression after having been vice-World Champion in U18 (for Drivers under 18 years old) last year.
“I am very happy to be here.”, said Matias with a smile. “After the U18, I am actually reaching the top of
international Karting. I am aware that the level is very high and that the task will be hard but I want to
get close to the best as soon as possible.”
According to the new formula this first round of the World KF1 Championship will be held in two distinct
days. On both Saturday and Sunday, Competitors will participate in a qualifying session in the morning
before doing two races in the afternoon – with the same number of points allocated in each.
In addition to this first world meeting, the German track of Wackersdorf will also host the European
KZ1 and KZ2 Championships. In division 1 of gearbox karts, the fight announces itself as magnificient
between the professionals of Karting – like the title-holder Bas Lammers, his team-mate at Intrepid’s
Jérémy Iglésias, the CRG Drivers Jonathan Thonon, Arnaud Kozlinski and Davide Foré, the Tony-Kart

Drivers Marco Ardigo, Rick Dreezen and Gary Catt, as well as France’s Armand Convers and Thomas Mich
– and a few youngsters like in particular the Dutchwoman Beitske Visser, who is determined to challenge
the establishment. For KZ1, serious matters will begin on Saturday morning with qualifying practice and
the qualifying heats; and on the Sunday there will be a final phase, which comprises a Prefinal and a
decisive Final, with a European crown into the bargain…
For the 108 KZ2 Competitors in the second division of gearbox karts the format will be the same. The
latter have however already faced qualifying practice on Friday evening before their qualifying heats
begin on Saturday. The Italian Francesco Celenta (CRG-TM) has achieved the fastest lap times but his
compatriot Fabian Federer (CRG/TM), the Swede Johan Johansson (Energy/TM) and the Frenchman Clément da Silva (Birel/TM) were within the same tenth of a second. This is all very promising !

Préparation assidue
Au fil des heures, la tension monte dans les paddocks du circuit Pro Kart Raceland de Wackersdorf, où se
déroule la première manche du Championnat du Monde KF1 (la catégorie reine du Karting) et l’unique
épreuve des Championnats d’Europe KZ1 et KZ2 (les divisions 1 et 2 des karts à boîte de vitesses).
Durant deux jours, les Pilotes et leurs Équipes ont travaillé d’arrache-pied. Tous n’avaient qu’un but :
trouver les meilleurs réglages pour les essais qualificatifs, programmés ce samedi matin pour les KF1 et
KZ1 alors que Francesco Celenta s’est déjà montré le plus rapide en KZ2.
Pendant ces deux jours, un jeune homme a déjà beaucoup fait parler de lui : Nyck De Vries (Zanardi/
Parilla/Bridgestone). Champion du Monde en titre, le Néerlandais est assurément l’homme à battre et il
a régulièrement pointé aux avant-postes durant les essais libres. « C’est clair que Nyck est très rapide »,
confie le Belge Sébastien Bailly (Kosmic/Vortex/Brigestone), vice-champion d’Europe KF2 l’an dernier.
« Mais c’est à nous de travailler pour nous rapprocher de lui. Avec cette nouvelle formule de Championnat
du Monde en cinq rendez-vous, il est important d’être à la fois rapide et régulier. Avant, un incident lors
de la Finale décisive pouvait ruiner tout un week-end. Cette fois, ce sera le plus fort sur l’ensemble de la
saison qui devrait être titré. »
Tourné vers les jeunes, le nouveau Championnat du Monde a notamment attiré Alexander Albon (Intrepid/TM/Bridgestone), vainqueur de la Coupe du Monde et Champion d’Europe en KF3 (les Juniors de 13 à
15 ans) l’an dernier. « Je suis l’un des plus jeunes », explique le Britannique de 15 ans. « Mais je ne pense
pas que ce soit un vrai désavantage. Ce qui risque le plus de me manquer, c’est une certaine expérience.
Mais c’est justement dans un Championnat comme celui-ci que l’on peut se la forger. On a vu pendant
les essais libres que les écarts sont minimes. Il faudra donc bien négocier la séance qualificative de ce
samedi matin. J’espère m’y montrer compétitif ! »
Ce Championnat du Monde permettra aussi au Finlandais Matias Köykkä (CRG/Maxter/Bridgestone) de
poursuivre sa progression après avoir été vice-champion du Monde M18 (les moins de 18 ans) l’an dernier. « Je suis très heureux d’être là », sourit Matias. « Après le M18, j’accède vraiment au top du Karting
international. Je sais que le niveau est très élevé et que la tâche sera ardue. Mais je veux me rapprocher
au plus vite des meilleurs. »
Selon la nouvelle formule, ce premier round du Championnat du Monde KF1 se déroulera en deux journées distinctes. Tant samedi que dimanche, les Concurrents disputeront une séance d’essais qualificatifs
le matin avant de prendre part à deux courses – attribuant chacun le même nombre de points – l’après. /.

Outre ce premier rendez-vous mondial, la piste allemande de Wackersdorf accueille aussi les Championnat d’Europe KZ1 et KZ2. Dans la division 1 des karts à boîte de vitesses, la lutte s’annonce grandiose
entre les professionnels du Karting – comme le tenant du titre Bas Lammers, son équipier chez Intrepid
Jérémy Iglésias, les Pilotes CRG Jonathan Thonon, Arnaud Kozlinski et Davide Foré, les Pilotes Tony-Kart
Marco Ardigo, Rick Dreezen et Gary Catt ou encore les Français Armand Convers et Thomas Mich – et
quelques jeunes, avec notamment la Néerlandaise Beitske Visser, bien décidée à bousculer les valeurs
établies. Pour les KZ1, les choses sérieuses débuteront samedi matin avec les essais qualificatifs puis les
manches qualificatives ; et le dimanche aura lieu la phase finale, comprenant une Préfinale et la Finale
décisive. Au bout de celle-ci, une couronne européenne…
Appartenant à la deuxième division des karts à boîte de vitesses, les 108 Concurrents de la KZ2 suivront
le même schéma. Toutefois, ceux-ci ont déjà affronté les essais qualificatifs ce vendredi soir avant de
débuter leurs manches qualificatives samedi. L’Italien Francesco Celenta (CRG-TM) a signé le meilleur
temps, mais son compatriote Fabian Federer (CRG/TM), le Suédois Johan Johansson (Energy/TM) et le
Français Clément da Silva (Birel/TM) pointaient dans le même dixième. Voilà qui promet !
