Music and the training of young people mean a lot to me, and I am
delighted to see them here at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel. My
dearest wish is that the level of excellence of the Music Chapel will help
young talents to give their best and to create an international musical
elite, beyond borders and cultures.
Une saison se termine ! En beauté…
Een seizoen eindigt! In schoonheid…
du département artistique ;
nu hij 75 lentes telt. Vanaf volgend seizoen is hij Artistiek Directeur Emeritus. Anne-Lise Parotte wordt verantwoordelijk voor de artistieke afdeling;

A season comes to a close... on a high note!
Two young singers in residence with José van Dam, Sarah Laulan and Yu
Shao, won respectively 3rd and 4th prize at Queen Elisabeth Competition.
The Music Chapel is of course very happy for Sarah and Yu and for the
artistic team and thankful to the one who supported them during the
last months.
At the end of this season, we would like to wish all the best to the one
who are leaving us for an other step in their musical life. We would also
like to thank ever so much two important personalities at the Music
Chapel these last ten years:
Arie van Lysebeth, our artistic director, goes into well-deserved retirement at the age of 75. He will become Artistic Director Emeritus as of
next year. Furthermore, Anne-Lise Parotte was appointed head of the
artistic department.
Abdel Rahman El Bacha made a major contribution to the restructuring
of the Music Chapel and headed a piano section for 10 years. The Music
Chapel will keep only one piano section next year, under the direction of
Maria João Pires and Abdel Rahman El Bacha will teach as Guest Master.
A new, very dynamic season is shaping up...
The 2014-2015 season can count on high-level participants: 60 soloists in
residence from 22 nationalities. The Music Chapel expects to complete
its major restructuring project this year, with the opening of the new
building in winter. This new situation will give new impetus to the development of the Music Chapel on the training front but also as a future
concert hall in Waterloo.
In the meantime, enjoy a musical summer...
With many concerts in Belgium and abroad, particularly «Les Musicales
de Beloeil» on September 6th, a tour with «deFilharmonie» on September 18 and 19 at Flagey and deSingel and, of course, the grand musical
tour to India at the end of September.

Center for excellence
Center of excellence
Masters: transmission
For high-level training
Anne-Lise Parotte, head of Artistic Department
The Music Chapel represents a center of excellence for high-level
training, that is based on three concepts:
1. Shaping the musician’s artistic personality
2. Improving his or her instrumental or voice technique
3. Launching a professional career through a particularly extensive
program of concerts and recitals
Because every student is different, we believe it is important to establish
an individually-tailored instruction, and take students’ profiles into consideration.
The presence of masters in residence, who pursue a very intensive professional career, and their role in guiding young musical talents, constitute the corner stone of our educational project. By collaborating with
a mentor, it creates a genuine companionship feeling. But in addition to
the six masters in residence, the Music Chapel also welcomes visiting artists. Regularly, leading classical artists are giving master classes, workshops, chamber music coaching, and performances side-by-side with our
young soloists.

Personal development
Beyond the music, there are people, different
and inspiring, beautiful in what brings them together and keeps them apart. The Chapel is the
perfect playground for all of us to improve ourselves, develop our skills and always try to break
imposed limits. That’s why we’re here.

Artists Village
In cooperation with the Fondation Benoit, all the artists, and the team,
we created a new department: the Artists Village. The focus is put on the
students and their everyday lives, highlighting the psychological part of
the residency.

This new « mood » and dynamic, based on a more human aspect, helps
students managing their lives better and creating a genuine companionship feeling. Therefore, the Artists Village promotes five factors to reach
a coherence between the philosophy of instruction & the quality of the
environment :
Maria João Pires, artistic director
Joana Noeth, coordination

Career development
NEWS from the voice department
The Music Chapel bolsters the importance to support its young artists
through the beginning of their career, helping them make a name for
themselves. We take their professional background into consideration,
highlight their strengths to project the best image of themselves to the
public, and support them plan their career path in the long term.
The career development relies on two concepts:
Sarah Laulan, mezzo and Yu Shao, tenor (soloists of Music Chapel, section of José van Dam) won the 3rd & 4th prize of Queen Elisabeth Competition 2014.
1. Promotion
The Music Chapel promotes its young musicians and their art, to help
them gain exposure. We collaborate with the music label Outher (Fuga
Libera/Zig Zag Territoires: Music Chapel CD Collection), to release one
CD per year.
2. Student visibility
The Music Chapel also supports students by increasing their promotional
value using different communication channels. For this to happen, we
help them:
elaborate their resume, press pack, and demo recordings
develop an international press campaign through press releases and
news conferences
encourage European networking, thanks to the Impresario’s days that
we organise in Belgium
In 2004, when reorganising their program, the Music Chapel opened a
new voice section which welcomed José van Dam as master in residence.
Since then, a lot of singers have attended this program, many of whom
have gone onto successful careers.
The magnificent results obtained by Sarah Laulan (3rd prize) and Yu Shao
(4th prize) at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2004 reflect 10 years of
dedicated work carried out by the entire teaching staff.
Cooperation with the Monnaie Opera House, the enoa network, as well
as co-productions with various broadcasters and symphony orchestras
has given our performers multiple opportunities to perform on stage.
This was the case with the recent international tour with Sinfonia Varsovia in September 2013, Mendelssohn’s oratorio Paulus with the Brussels
Philharmonic at the Music Chapel Festival in Flagey in November, the coproduction Les Mamelles de Tiresias at the Monnaie in January 2014 and
the José van Dam & YOU concert at Bozar with the National Orchestra of
Belgium last March, enabled them to perform in public with top notch
orchestras and conductors.
promote students through the internet, with social sharing
As for their immediate future, Yu Shao was selected to join the Atelier
Lyrique at Opera de Paris for the season 14/15 and Sarah Laulan will
be Hermia in Les Caprices de Marianne of Henri Sauguet by Oriol Tomas
directed by Claude Schnitzler, a production touring in Reims, Tours, Metz,
Avignon, Marseille, and many others.

Carreer development
Partitura
