New Season 2016–2017 - “Out of the Box”
Comme déjà évoqué dans le trimestriel d’été, « Out of the box » constitue le label de cette nouvelle saison 16-17,
pleine de promesses pour une Chapelle qui, depuis 2004, s’est repensée autour d’une mission artistique toujours
plus intense ! La Chapelle travaille dans son laboratoire à visage découvert et développe un foisonnement musical
sans précédent. Elle relève le défi aujourd’hui de se déployer en dehors de sa ruche, au-delà de son cadre, entre
les artistes et avec le public à travers : Le compagnonnage par la transmission du savoir, notamment dans des
masterclasses publiques, in situ et à l’extérieur : Le partage de la scène entre jeunes artistes et leurs maîtres, dans
la saison MuCH et On Tour dans de nombreux projets en Belgique et à travers le monde ; L’axe « community »,
appelé à se renforcer dans des univers où la musique ne trouve pas toujours sa place naturellement ;
Le développement des nouveaux médias : live streaming, enregistrements numériques, intégrales et projets
originaux d’archivage.
Zoals reeds gemeld in de zomereditie, vormt ‘Out of the box’ de rode draad van dit nieuwe, veelbelovende
seizoen 16-17, voor een Kapel, die zich, sinds 2004, aan het herstructureren is rond een almaar intensievere
artistieke missie! De Kapel kan voortaan voluit functioneren in haar center of excellence en een ongeëvenaard
muzikaal aanbod ontwikkelen. Vandaag neemt ze de uitdaging aan om buiten het bekende stramien te denken,
om buiten haar geijkte kader te treden, tussen de artiesten onderling en met het publiek aan de hand van: De
‘compagnonnage’, door kennisoverdracht, in publieke masterclasses, in situ en extra muros; Het delen van het
podium door de jonge artiesten met hun meester, in het kader van het seizoen MuCH en On Tour, in tal van
projecten in binnen- en buitenland; De pijler ‘community’, die nauwere banden wenst aan te halen met werelden
waar muziek niet vanzelfsprekend is; De ontwikkeling van nieuwe media: livestream, digitale opnames, integrale
opnames en originele bewaringsprojecten.
L’automne est le moment d’une nouvelle saison artistique avec cette année l’arrivée d’un nouveau maître en
résidence, le pianiste canadien Louis Lortie, un cru exceptionnel de jeunes talents, 63 solistes en résidence issus
de 22 nationalités, une qualité sans doute inégalée et un potentiel de développement très enthousiasmant, de
nombreux artistes et ensembles invités. L’automne est aussi le début d’une nouvelle saison de diffusion :
Met de herfst breekt een nieuw artistiek seizoen aan, met dit jaar de komst van een nieuwe meester in
residentie, de Canadese pianist Louis Lortie, een uitzonderlijke nieuwe lichting jonge talenten, met name 63
solisten in residentie met 22 verschillende nationaliteiten, een ongetwijfeld ongeëvenaarde kwaliteit en een heel
inspirerend groeipotentieel, en tal van gastartiesten en -ensembles. De herfst betekent ook de start van een nieuw
concertseizoen:
• La saison MuCH : Après une 1ère saison très réussie en qualité et aussi en nombre (15.000 visiteurs), La saison
MuCH 16-17 s’est ouverte le 21 septembre dernier dans cet esprit : la Chapelle ouvre ses portes au public, les
artistes se rencontrent et partagent leur expérience, le flux artistique crée l’émulation, en plein cœur de
Waterloo.
• Après deux concerts d’ouverture exceptionnels de Louis Lortie et puis de Frank Braley et Renaud Capuçon, nous
proposons de nombreuses masterclasses, concerts de jeunes (avec le début d’un cycle de récitals pour
violoncelle) et de maîtres (notamment Gary Hoffman avec Claire Désert), la venue aussi de masterclasses et
concerts du Quatuor Ebène, de Dietrich Henschl (en collaboration avec enoa) ou encore une production
« Chapelle-enoa » avec La Petite Flûte Enchantée, spectacle interactif avec le public.
• La saison On Tour accueillera notamment l’orchestre de l’Ecole Menuhin en résidence à l’occasion d’un concert
autour du 100ème anniversaire de sa naissance, une présence renforcée au festival de Schiermonnikoog aux Pays Bas ou encore bien sûr notre « Music Chapel Festival », coproduit avec Flagey et consacré cette année à la
Musique viennoise (Vienna Classics) du 7 au 10 décembre.

• Het seizoen MuCH: Na een zowel kwalitatief als kwantitatief zeer geslaagd eerste seizoen (15.000 bezoekers),
hebben we het seizoen MuCH 16-17 op 21 september jl. ingezet in deze geest: de Kapel opent haar deurenvoor
het publiek, artiesten ontmoeten er elkaar en delen er hun ervaring, de artistieke stroom chept een gezond
competitief klimaat, en dit in hartje Waterloo.
• Na twee opmerkelijke openingsconcerten van Louis Lortie en vervolgens Frank Braley en Renaud Capuçon,
bieden we talrijke masterclasses aan, alsook concerten van jongeren (met de start van een recitalreeks voor
cello) en meesters (meer bepaald Gary Hoffman met Claire Désert), alsook masterclasses en concerten van het
Quatuor Ébène, van Dietrich Henschl (in samenwerking met enoa), of nog een productie ‘Chapelle-enoa’, met
la Petite Flûte Enchantée (De Kleine Toverfluit), een interactieve voorstelling met het publiek.
• Het seizoen On Tour ontvangt het orkest van de Menuhin School in residentie, naar aanleiding van een concert
rond haar 100-jarige bestaan, een verhoogde aanwezigheid op het Schiermonnikoogfestival in Nederland, of
nog uiteraard ons ‘Music Chapel Festival’, in coproductie met Flagey en dit jaar gewijd aan de Weense muziek
(Vienna Classics), van 7 tot 10 december.

As previously mentioned in the summer quarterly, “Out of the Box” is the leitmotif of this new season 16-17,
a season rich in promises for a Chapel which, since 2004, has reinvented itself annually around an increasingly
intensive artistic mission! The Chapel works openly in its laboratory and has fostered unprecedented musical
development. It is now taking up the challenge of spreading its wings beyond its hive, beyond its framework,
together with the artists and the audience through: The transmission of knowledge, among others in public
masterclasses, both on and off site; Sharing the stage between young artists and their masters, during the MuCH
season and On Tour in many projects in Belgium and around the world; The “Community” axis that is destined to
take root in places where music is not always naturally at home; The development of new media: live-streaming,
complete recordings, digital recordings, and original archival projects.
Autumn marks the start of a new artistic season with this year the arrival of a new Master in residence, the
Canadian pianist Louis Lortie, an exceptional vintage of young talents, 63 soloists in residence of 22 nationalities,
a probably unequalled quality and a very exciting development potential, many guest artists and ensembles.
Autumn is also the start of a new touring season:
•The MuCH season: After a very successful first season in terms of both quality and quantity (15,000 visitors), the
MuCH Music 16-17 season launched on 21 September in this spirit: the Chapel will open its doors to the public,
artists will come together and share their experience, and the artistic flow will encourage a spirit of emulation,
here in the heart of Waterloo!
• After two exceptional opening concerts by Louis Lortie and then by Frank Braley and Renaud Capuçon, we are
proposing many masterclasses, concerts by young artists (with the launch of a cycle of cello recitals) and by
masters (among others Gary Hoffman with Claire Désert), the arrival also of masterclasses and concerts by
Quatuor Ebène, Dietrich Henschl (in collaboration with enoa) and a joint “Chapel-enoa” production with the
“Little Magic Flute”, an interactive show.
• The On Tour season will welcome among others the orchestra of the Menuhin School in residence on the
occasion of a concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of Menuhin’s birth, a presence reinforced at the Schier monnikoog festival in the Netherlands and of course our Music Chapel Festival co-produced with Flagey and
devoted this year to Vienna Classics from 7 until 10 December.

La Chapelle Musicale est un laboratoire, un lieu unique de foisonnement artistique : dans
le cadre de la série Laboratory, elle ouvre ses portes au public pour faire suivre l’évolution
de chaque artiste en résidence. Dans un esprit de compagnonnage, plongez-vous dans
notre laboratoire musical en assistant aux récitals de nos solistes en résidence, comme
celui de Nathanael Gouin, consacré entièrement à Brahms.
La saison 2016 du festival musical du Brabant wallon, placée sous le signe des rencontres
Orient - Occident, s’inscrit dans un monde de plus en plus tendu et inquiet qui appelle à
réfléchir à un objectif sinon simple, du moins nécessaire: comment apprendre à mieux
vivre ensemble, en nous enrichissant de nos différences, au lieu de nous replier sur des
identités de plus en plus agressives?
De Muziekkapel is een laboratorium, een unieke plaats voor artistieke rijkdom: in het kader van de reeks Laboratory opent ze haar deuren voor het publiek, zodat men de ontwikkeling van elke artiest in residentie kan volgen. Laat u onderdompelen in een geest van
‘compagnonnage’ in ons muzikaal laboratorium, tijdens de recitals van onze solisten in
residentie, zoals dat van Nathanaël Gouin, volledig gewijd aan Brahms.
Het seizoen 2016 van het festival musical du Brabant wallon, geplaatst onder het teken van
de Oost-Westontmoetingen, ligt in de lijn van een wereld met almaar meer spanning en
onrust, die oproept om na te denken over een zo niet eenvoudige, dan toch noodzakelijke
doelstelling: hoe kunnen we leren om beter samen te leven, door onszelf te verrijken
dankzij onze verschillen, veeleer dan onszelf te keren tot almaar agressievere identiteiten?

Pour sa série Prestige, la Chapelle ouvre ses portes à des musiciens de qualité, tel JeanClaude Vanden Eynden, un habitué des lieux puisqu'il y a vécu en résidence pendant ses
études de piano. Il revient d'ailleurs régulièrement à la Chapelle en tant que coach de
piano, et cette fois-ci en tant que soliste invité à se produire dans un récital qu'il consacre
à la musique de Schubert.

Voor haar reeks Prestige ontvangt de Kapel gevierde musici, zoals Jean-Claude Vanden
Eynden, geen onbekende voor de Kapel, omdat hij er tijdens zijn pianostudies in residentie
verbleef. Hij komt trouwens geregeld terug naar de Kapel als pianocoach en dit keer als
gastsolist voor een recital gewijd aan Schubert.

On ne présente plus le Quatuor Ebène, quatuor français formé en 1999 et qui a depuis
acquis une réputation internationale, non seulement dans le répertoire classique, mais
aussi dans le jazz, le contemporain, et la réinterprétation des tubes populaires. Invités à se
produire à la Chapelle Musicale, ils y donneront aussi une master class aux jeunes musiciens en résidence du département de musique de chambre du Quatuor Artemis.
Assistez au MuCH Open Lab, Master class donnée par le Quatuor Ebène aux ensembles
de musique de chambre en résidence à la Chapelle. Une occasion unique de découvrir
l'art de la musique de chambre : de l'intérieur, en compagnie d'un quatuor de réputation
internationale.

Het Franse Quatuor Ebène dient niet meer voorgesteld te worden, omdat het sinds
zijn oprichting in 1999 een internationale reputatie opgebouwd heeft, niet enkel in het
klassieke repertoire, maar ook in de jazz, de hedendaagse muziek, en de herinterpretatie
van populaire hits. Daags na hun optreden op de Muziekkapel zullen ze er een Master class
geven aan de jonge musici in residentie aan de afdeling kamermuziek o.l.v. het Artemis
Quartet.

Woon dus ook MuCH Open Lab bij, een Master class gegeven door het Quatuor Ebène
aan de kamermuziekensembles in residentie aan de Kapel. Een unieke kans om de
kamermuziekkunst te ontdekken: van binnenuit, in gezelschap van een kwartet met
internationale uitstraling.

L’Artist Diploma permet aux artistes sortant après plusieurs années de perfectionnement
au sein de notre institution, d’offrir un récital complet ouvert au public. Ce récital marque
officiellement une étape importante pour des artistes qui sont déjà de plus en plus invités
sur les scènes internationales. Les concerts Artists Diploma sont par ailleurs captés par
Outhere pour leur collection digitale, retransmis sur la RTBF-Musiq3, et mis en valeur par
un réseau international (agents, promoteurs, producteurs).
L’ensemble des Fancy Fiddlers, créé en 1984, se compose de jeunes talents, violonistes
et violoncellistes, de 6 à 19 ans sous la supervision de la pédagogue Coosje Wijzenbeek à
Hilversum. Chaque samedi ils font de la musique de chambre avec les élèves violoncellistes
de Monique Bartels au Conservatoire d’Amsterdam sous l’appellation commune des
"Fancy Fiddlers". Les Fancy Fiddlers font de nombreuses représentations dans des lieux
très divers, non seulement aux Pays-Bas, (entre autres, au Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam)
mais aussi sur des scènes européennes et même chinoises. Ces concerts ont pour but de
donner l’expérience de la scène aux jeunes talents musicaux.

Het Artist Diploma vormt de start van het professionele leven van die artiesten die reeds
almaar meer uitgenodigd worden op de internationale podia. Bovendien zullen de concerten van Artists Diploma opgenomen worden door Outhere voor hun digitale collectie, en
uitgezonden worden op Musiq3.
Het strijkersensemble de Fancy Fiddlers bestaat uit viool- en cellotalenten in de leeftijd
van 6 tot 19 jaar onder supervisie van de Hilversumse vioolpedagoge Coosje Wijzenbeek.
Daarnaast wordt iedere zaterdag samen met celloleerlingen van Monique Bartels aan het
Conservatorium van Amsterdam intensief kamermuziek gestudeerd in verschillende bezettingen onder de gemeenschappelijke noemer 'Fancy Fiddlers'.

La plénitude de la sonorité, une technique parfaite, une sensibilité artistique exceptionnelle
caractérisent le style de Gary Hoffman. Membre d'une famille de nombreux musiciens
originaires de Vancouver, Gary Hoffman fait ses débuts au Wigmore Hall de Londres dès
l'âge de 15 ans. New York l'accueillit ensuite, tandis qu'à l'âge de 22 ans il devenait, en
1979, le plus jeune professeur de la célèbre école de musique de l'Université d'Indiana
où il resta huit ans. Il continue toujours d'enseigner dans les plus grandes académies et
festivals. Le Premier Grand Prix Rostropovich qu'il obtient à Paris en 1986 lui ouvre les voies
d'une carrière internationale qui le conduit à se produire avec les plus grandes formations.
Il est depuis 2011, Maître en résidence à la Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth. Installé
depuis 1990 à Paris, Gary Hoffman joue sur un Nicolo Amati de 1662 ayant appartenu à
Léonard Rose.
The Viennese spirit in masterpieces of the fin du siècle
To conclude the weeklong workshop, the artists of the enoa network and those of the
Music Chapel will present a recital devoted entirely to fin-de-siècle Viennese music. This
recital will let the audience enjoy the fruits of the workshop conducted by the famous
baritone Dietrich Henschel, with the collaboration of Darren Ross. enoa is the acronym
of the “European Network of Opera Academies”, of which the Music Chapel is a part. The
network promotes exchanges between institutions to develop the world of opera. The
European Commission renewed its support to enoa for the “Young opera makers” program
2016-2020.
De grote schoonheid van de volle klank, een perfecte techniek en een uitzonderlijke
poëtische gevoeligheid kenmerken de stijl van Gary Hoffman. Als telg van een familie
met talrijke musici afkomstig van Vancouver, trad Gary Hoffman voor het eerst op in de
Wigmore Hall in Londen vanaf 15-jarige leeftijd. Gary Hoffman bespeelt een Nicolò Amaticello uit 1662, die toebehoord heeft aan Leonard Rose.

Le Festival Muse Salentine est une association culturelle qui a son siège à Alessano (Lecce),
où s’organisent des événements musicaux et culturels de haut niveau pour animer certains
lieux les plus intéressants d’un point de vue historique et culturel de la péninsule du Salento. Chaque année, les Muse Salentine organisent une série de concerts informels avec un
nombre restreint de spectateurs, pour créer un lien fort entre artistes et public. Depuis
2014, le Festival s’est associé à la Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth, dont elle produit les
solistes en résidence les plus talentueux.

Voor zijn vijftiende editie stelde het Internationaal Kamermuziekfestival Schiermonnikoog
met zijn vaste en tal van nieuwe gasten een ambitieus programma samen. Drie generaties
‘Engelsen’ komen aan bod: Joseph Haydn, Edward Elgar en Frank Bridge vertegenwoordigen grof genomen de 18e, 19e en 20e eeuw. Oude muziek wordt trouwens niet vergeten.

Tijdens de koffieconcerten kunt u elke dag genieten van het spel van jonge talentvolle musici. De van oorsprong Koreaanse violiste Jane (Hyeonjin) Cho, inmiddels studerend in Brussel, kiest voor twee virtuoze werken voor soloviool van barokke grootmeesters. Wegens
succes van de koffieconcerten zijn er extra concerten in de ochtenduren!

Had u het achter Beethoven gezocht? Zo’n 160 Ierse en Schotse folksongs bewerkte de toch
vaak als stug beschreven componist tot blijmoedige zettingen voor zang en pianotrio. De
selectie van vanavond gaat vooraf aan de donkere cellosonate van Bridge; de enige echte
Brit van vanavond. Weliswaar met een Engelse vader – en naam – groeide Onslow op in
Frankrijk, waar hij altijd terug zou keren. Zijn favoriete genre: het strijkkwintet.

Variations brillantes et concertantes sur l’air ‘God save the King’, op. 38
De oversteek van Engeland naar het continent was voor componisten uit vroeger eeuwen
een forse onderneming. Vanavond overbruggen we de Noordzee moeiteloos, meer dan
eens. We reizen van Brittens Londen naar het Wenen van Schönberg, om zowaar te stuiten
op een continentaal eerbetoon aan het Engelse koningshuis. De klarinet brengt ons even
terug in Engeland. Drie jonge musici, die elkaar vonden tijdens het Festival Jong Talent,
sluiten feestelijk af op het vasteland met Mendelssohn.

Nativitas est une ASBL qui a pour but d’aider les personnes en situation précaire ou isolées
en leur ouvrant les portes d’une maison accueillante située en plein cœur des Marolles,
“La Bicoque”. Parallèlement à l’aide matérielle qu’elle leur apporte, NATIVITAS a également
pour objectif d’encourager la culture en offrant l’accès à des activités culturelles et
artistiques aux personnes les plus démunies. C’est dans ce cadre que la Chapelle Musicale
désire collaborer avec l’ASBL Nativitas, de façon à offrir des concerts de haute qualité à
« La Bicoque » même, en envoyant des solistes en résidence et le support logistique
adapté à l’organisation de ces concerts atypiques.
L’orchestre I Musici Brucellensis sous la baguette de Zofia Wislocka est un orchestre à
cordes à géométrie variable. Son répertoire s’étend de la musique baroque aux œuvres
contemporaines.
Het is in dit kader dat de Muziekkapel wenst samen te werken met de vzw Nativitas, door
concerten van hoog niveau te geven op ‘La Bicoque’ zelf, door solisten in residentie en de
aangepaste logistieke steun te sturen voor de organisatie van atypische concerten.

This concert programme was conceived in the spirit of commemorating the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe (1858-1931), acclaimed as a great master of the Belgian
school of violin performance. His legacy was passed on through his students and continues even today to inspire new generations of musicians. Among the six musicians who
will perform the concert are two disciples of the Belgian violin school, Lorenzo Gatto and
Yossif Ivanov. They were taught in the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel under Augustin Dumay, whose own master was Arthur Grumiaux. The latter was himself taught by Théodore
Dubois, a disciple of Eugène Ysaÿe. Joining these two artists are the young Belgian pianist
Julien Libeer, the Belgian cellist Marie Hallynck, the first violinist of the National Orchestra of Belgium Alexei Mochkov, and Mihoko Kusama, soloist with the National Orchestra
of Belgium. Tonight’s concert is therefore a true homage to the Belgian violinist Eugène
Ysaÿe, and performed by a set of highly skilled musicians who directly represent Ysaÿe’ s legacy. This project is presented jointly by three of Belgium’s prestigious cultural institutions:
the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition,
and the National Orchestra of Belgium. The concert is offered by Belgium to Japan on the
occasion of the State Visit to Japan of Their Majesties the King and Queen of the Belgians
to mark the 150th Anniversary of Friendship between Belgium and Japan.

Cycle Camille Saint-Saëns, un célèbre inconnu : Après la publication d’une partie de sa
correspondance, le Palazzetto Bru Zane a enregistré ses cantates pour le prix de Rome de
1852 (Le Retour de Virginie) et 1864 (Ivanhoé), puis sa « tragédie lyrique » Les Barbares
de 1901. À chaque fois, la redécouverte fut jugée d’envergure et il semblait naturel que
le Centre de musique romantique française consacre un cycle à cet artiste éclectique et
imprévisible, avec, notamment, la résurrection de nombreuses pages lyriques (mélodies
avec piano ou orchestre, Proserpine, Le Timbre d’argent).

Yehudi Menuhin at 100: A concert in tribute to ‘the musician of peace’: Violins for peace,
initiated & produced by the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation. This concert will
celebrate Yehudi Menuhin’s hundredth anniversary. In the image of the “universal” personality of this great Maestro, the concert will bring together musicians from all generations
and the most diverse musical influences. The event will pay homage to this world-renowned violinist, exceptional musician and philanthropist who spent his life promoting peace
and intercultural dialogue. The great violinists Dr. Subramaniam and Ambi Subramaniam
(India), Valeriy Sokolov (Ukraine), Vadim Repin (Russia/Belgium), Gilles Apap (France),
Iva Bittova (Czech Republic) and Kerson Leong (2010 winner of the Junior First Prize at the
Menuhin Competition in Oslo) will be taking part, as well as Menuhin’s favourite student,
Volker Biesenbender (Germany). Also performing will be the Turkish percussionist Burhan
Oçal, and the Hungarian virtuoso of the gypsy violin, Roby Lakatos. The Yehudi Menuhin
School Orchestra and the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel will likewise be part of the programme.

Convivial a pour objectif de favoriser l’insertion des réfugiés en Belgique dans une dynamique d’écoute et d’engagement réciproque entre Belges et réfugiés. Convivial s’est donné
pour mission d’accompagner les réfugiés, les bénéficiaires de la protection subsidiaire et
les demandeurs d’asile tout au long de leur parcours, de leur installation à leur insertion
sociale et professionnelle en Belgique. Une seconde mission consiste à sensibiliser le
grand public et à favoriser la rencontre entre Belges et Refugiés. C'est dans cet esprit que
la Chapelle Musicale et Convivial s'associent pour organiser 4 concerts par an à Bruxelles,
invitant les réfugiés et l'audience locale, de façon à créer un lien social entre différents
publics. En effet, la musique est un langage international qui permet de construire des
ponts entre les cultures.

tentant de re-définir le concept d’ « Avant-Garde » et de l’illustrer au travers de nombreux
artistes. Les Solistes de la Chapelle Musicale présenteront le versant musical de l’avantgarde, à travers des programmes de compositeurs pionniers de leur temps. L’avant-garde
est un terme issu à la fois du monde de la guerre et de l’art. Elle prospère dans des sociétés
en plein développement. Les artistes sont les visionnaires des révolutions sociales. Dans
l’art plastique, l’âge d’or de l’avant-garde se situe entre 1895 et 1920, la Première Guerre
mondiale symbolisant une fracture à l’échelle internationale. Quelle est, aujourd’hui, la
pertinence de cette forme d’art innovatrice? Une quinzaine d’artistes contemporains réputés engagent le dialogue avec leurs prédécesseurs, d’Ensor et Munch aux mouvements
qui virent le jour au lendemain de la guerre. Les artistes d’aujourd’hui se sentent souvent profondément liés à des oeuvres avant-gardistes spécifiques. Leurs choix, résonnant
avec leurs propres oeuvres, nous ouvrent les yeux sur un cadre référentiel inédit de l’art
moderne. L’avant-garde a encore de beaux jours devant elle.

De Muziekkapel Koningin Elisabeth stuurt ook dit jaar haar getalenteerde solisten naar
MIRY Concertzaal. Musicologen zijn het er over eens. Strijkkwartetten hebben weinig tot
niets gemeen met pannenkoeken. Dat wil zeggen dat de eerstelingen niet noodzakelijk tot
mislukken zijn gedoemd. Zowel Mozart als Mendelssohn leveren daarvoor het bewijs. Hun
eerste wapenfeiten binnen het genre van het strijkkwartet kunnen zich bovendien geen
betere pleitbezorgers dromen dan het jonge Arod Quartet. Hoewel dit viertal slechts in
2013 het levenslicht zag, sleepten ze al meer dan één kamermuziekprijs in de wacht. Frisse
interpretaties voor een frisse zondagvoormiddag.

Convivial beoogt de integratie van vluchtelingen in België te bevorderen, in een luisterende
aanpak en met wederzijdse inzet van Belgen én vluchtelingen. Convivial heeft zich tot taak
gesteld om vluchtelingen, personen die in aanmerking komen voor subsidiaire bescherming, en asielaanvragers te begeleiden gedurende hun hele traject, van hun huisvesting tot
hun sociale en professionele integratie in België. Een tweede missie bestaat eruit om het

Quatre solistes en résidence partagent la scène avec deux maîtres en résidence de la
chapelle Musicale pour un concert de musique de chambre exceptionnel, consacré au
sextuor à cordes. Né en Allemagne, Brahms a fait la plus grande partie de sa carrière à
Vienne, où il était l'une des figures importantes sur la scène musicale romantique. Il y est
mort en 1897. Né à Vienne quelques années auparavant, Schönberg est le dépositaire
d’une tradition musicale essentiellement germanique, et un admirateur inconditionnel
de Brahms. Ses premières œuvres, comme La Nuit transfigurée reflètent encore ce
romantisme tardif, comportant des passages très chromatiques où la tonalité semble déjà
plus ou moins suspendue. Vier solisten in residentie delen het podium met twee meesters
in residentie van de Muziekkapel voor een uitzonderlijk kamermuziekconcert, gewijd
aan strijksextetten. De in Duitsland geboren Brahms heeft het grootste gedeelte van zijn
loopbaan in Wenen doorgebracht, waar hij een van de vooraanstaande figuren was van de
muziekwereld. Hij is er ook overleden in 1897. Schönberg werd enkele jaren daarvoor in
Wenen geboren, en hij is de bewaarder van een hoofdzakelijk Germaanse muzikale traditie
en een onvoorwaardelijke bewonderaar van Brahms. Zijn eerste werken, zoals Verklärte
Nacht, weerspiegelen nog die laatromantiek, met erg chromatische passages waar de
tonaliteit reeds min of meer opgeheven lijkt.

Le concerto pour trois pianos de Mozart est une œuvre jubilatoire. Pourtant c’est une
œuvre jubilatoire, dont se dégage un sentiment d’intense allégresse, et qui permet de
rassembler sur scène trois pianistes exceptionnels. Le concert se clôture avec le fameux
triple concerto de Beethoven.
Mozarts concerto voor drie piano’s vormt het een uitgelaten werk, waarvan een gevoelen
van intense gelukzaligheid uitgaat, en waardoor hier drie uitzonderlijke pianisten
het podium kunnen delen. Het concert wordt afgesloten met Beethovens beroemde
Tripelconcerto.

Haydn & Mozart sont les classiques incontournables Viennois. Le concert pour violoncelle
n°1 est une œuvre qui demande beaucoup de virtuosité au violoncelliste. La symphonie
concertante de Mozart rassemble violon et alto dans un dialogue vif et chaleureux, qui
donne aux deux instruments la même importance.
Haydn en Mozart zijn de Weense klassieken bij uitstek. Het Eerste Celloconcerto van Haydn
is een werk dat veel virtuositeit van de cellist vergt. Mozarts Sinfonia concertante is van
haar kant een opmerkelijk werk, waarbij de viool en de altviool elkaar in een levendige en
warme dialoog treffen, op gelijke voet.

Mozart semble apprécier le son de la clarinette : ce quintette inaugure le répertoire pour
clarinette et quatuor à cordes, ouvrant la voie notamment à von Weber et Brahms. Les
six quintettes à cordes de Mozart emploient chacun deux altos. La prédilection de Mozart
pour cet instrument au son profond, riche et chaleureux s’exprime par le soin particulier
qu’il lui apportait dans son écriture.
Mozart lijkt het geluid van de klarinet te waarderen : dit kwintet luidt het repertoire voor
klarinet en strijkkwartet in, en effende aldus het pad voor von Weber en Brahms. De
zes strijkkwintetten van Mozart hanteren elk twee altviolen. Mozarts voorliefde voor dit
instrument met diepe, rijke en warme tonen uit zich in de bijzondere zorg die hij eraan
wijdde in zijn composities.

Festival.
Ce récital de musique de chambre rassemble un programme de deux trios à cordes. Le
Divertimento K 563 en mi bémol majeur est le seul trio pour cordes de Mozart, écrit
à Vienne en septembre 1788, alors qu’il se trouve alors une situation matérielle et
psychologique désastreuse. L’inspiration est plus sérieuse que le titre ne le laisse supposer.
En 1816, Franz Schubert se met à composer un trio à cordes, dont il achève seulement
l’Allegro initial. Cet Allegro D. 471 est une pièce d’une fraîcheur et d’un charme attachants.
Dit kamermuziekrecital verenigt een programma van twee strijktrio’s. Het Divertimento KV
563 in Es-groot vormt Mozarts enige strijktrio, geschreven in september 1788 in Wenen,
toen hij zich in een rampzalige materiële en psychologische situatie bevond. De inspiratie
voor dit stuk is aldus ernstiger dan de titel laat vermoeden. In 1816 begint Franz Schubert
aan de compositie van een strijktrio, waarvan hij enkel het inleidende Allegro en een
deel van de langzame beweging afmaakt. Dit Allegro D471 is een stuk dat getuigt van een
innemende frisheid en charme.

Webern est un des pères fondateurs de la seconde école de Vienne: sa “Langsamer Satz”
date de 1905 et a été inspirée, dit-on, par une promenade dans les montagnes autour de
Vienne. Cette composition montre combien l’art de Webern est enraciné dans la tradition
du romantisme post-brahmsien, même s’il évolua plus tard dans les régions tout à fait
neuves de l’atonalité. Le quintette D. 956 de Franz Schubert se caractérise par la présence
d'un deuxième violoncelle, équilibrant l'ensemble d'une sonorité plus grave. C’est une
œuvre exceptionnellement longue, qui embarque l’auditeur dans un voyage intérieur
confinant à la méditation.
Webern is een van de stichters van de Tweede Weense School: zijn Langsamer Satz dateert
uit 1905 en was geïnspireerd, zo zegt men, op een bergwandeling in de buurt van Wenen.
Uit deze compositie blijkt hoezeer de kunst van Webern verankerd zit in de post-Brahmse
romantiek, zelfs als hij later evolueert naar volkomen nieuwe atonale sferen. Het kwintet
D. 956 van Franz Schubert kenmerkt zich door de aanwezigheid van een tweede cello, die
het geheel een lagere klank verleent. Het is een uitzonderlijk lang stuk, die de luisteraar
meeneemt op innerlijke reis grenzend aan de meditatie.

Pour clôturer le Festival en beauté, quoi de plus solennel que le requiem de
Mozart ? Laissée inachevée à sa mort, l’œuvre a suscité de nombreuses interrogations et
hypothèses. C’est un chef d’oeuvre d’une modernité étonnante, qui bouleverse encore
l’auditeur du 21ème siècle.
