Press release
AREA42, both a new venue and a new artists residency located in Brussels, keeps its policy of support and valuation of contemporary creation by hosting its first contemporary art exhibition :
The Red Monkey Whispers In The Ear Of Fear
Exhibition from october 13rd to 20th 2011
Fia Cielen, Reynold Reynolds, Link Leisure, June Peduzzi, Jerome Boutigny, Antoine Meyer, Quentin
Armand,
Piet.sO, Peter Keene (artists in residence since 2008)
and designers and architects Edouard Poullain and Gi Monseu.
The Red Monkey Whispers In The Ear Of Fear is a labyrinth of universes chosen by contemporary
artists that are able to meet and confront with an ambitious and strongly designed place. By bringing the presence of their enigmatic works, not only awarded artists and emerging, but also the Area
42’s creators are totally changing the smooth understanding of the place, initially dedicaded to
business events (a maze of 2500m2).
The visitors confront secrets, transformations, illusions, phobias, eccentricities, oddities... whispers to the ear of fear... throught :
The strange temporalities of filmmaker Reynold Reynolds ‘s movies,
the cutting and transgressive intelligence of Fia Cielen’s works,
the excentric science of Peter Keene’s « work in progress »,
the ghostly presences of french artist Piet. So’s installations,
the ambivalence of lights in Antoine Meyer’s photographs,
the multi-layer camouflages of canadian artiste Link Leisure,
the magnetic works of videomaker June Peduzzi
the forward imagination of Quentin Armand’s installations,
The incongruous innocence of Jérôme Boutigny,
The plastic world of Edouard Poullain,
And the multicoloured universes of Gi Monseu.
Editorial by Piet.sO
Let us imagine ourselves in one ear, a big ear rather deaf - the image, perhaps, of a world in multiple crises, with its population declined in tortuous furrows. Let us imagine a big crazy monkey,
detached from this world, now free to reach the air, extravagance or chaos.
There would be, in this world, lost machines looking for the “why”, an anxiety-provoking poetry
shiftily gesticulating. There would be crystals in the past anxiously hoping to see some sparks. Time
would gitter spasmodically or be trapped in a huge web. Fear...
Intelligent, sharp whispers, would tickle the ear. The monkey would have left its marks, his impertinence and secrets. It would be far more souple, in a groove of magnetic and colorful illusions.
This is the cryptic story that I can now tell about this group exhibition led by four voices.
Of course, all this has been built upside down, in the sensitivity of a wobbly in balance, as an ear
twisting in on itself like a Mobius loop. Everything coincides in the end. The 11 artists from different backgrounds are integrated simultaneously in all the different layers of this labyrinthine history.
They are all exploring in their own way some troubling questions of our contemporary world, and
their proposals open the way for a large maze that is AREA42.
Piet. So, french artist in residence at AREA 42 since 2009, co-curator with Peter Keene, Edouard Poullain and Antoine
Meyer.
Reynold Reynolds
(1966, Central Alaska, US) - artist, filmmaker –lives and works in Berlin
Secret Life. Two channel video projection, transferred from 16mm and stills, 5min. Germany, 2008
Award “Secret Life” won the 2008 EMAF Festival Award at the European Media Art Festival Osnabrueck, Germany.
During his undergraduate schooling at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Reynolds studied
Physics receiving a Bachelor’s degree under the professorship of Carl Wieman (Physics Nobel Laureate 2001). Changing his focus to studio art he remained two more years in Boulder to study under experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage. After moving to New York City Reynolds completed an
M.F.A. at the School of Visual Arts.
Influenced early on by philosophy and science, and working primarily with 16mm as an art medium, he has developed a film grammar based on transformation, consumption and decay. Detailed
evolving symbols and allusive references create a powerful pictorial language based on Reynolds’
analytical point of view. His depiction of people often makes us aware of the small frames we use
to understand reality. By subtly altering the regular conditions of life and watching their effects, he
transfers the experimental methods of science to filmmaking, where he frames reality in his laboratory and changes one variable at a time to reveal an underlying causality.

Fia Cielen
(1978 Belgium) - drawing, video, installations and sculptures – lives and works in Antwerpen
‘Gespooklichkeit’. Fia Cielen - pencil on paper, A1.
Fia Cielen graduated at the HISK in 2008. Ever since she has been exhibiting her works in Belgium
and abroad. Her work consists of drawings, video-works, installations and sculptures. The artist has
a true feeling for the absurd setting and a dark sense of humour in her work, often countered by an
eerie, almost sinister atmosphere.
Her work can be regarded as a Wunderkammer, a hybrid oeuvre that raises questions about the
uncanny nature of everyday things, transgression and metamorphosis.
Her latest works are inspired by science fiction and the monstrous. Monsters exceed boundaries,
reconfigure forms and are always horrible and wonderful. They exist as a state of becoming, rather
than as a false marker of fixity. In this way, works which can use this form as both image and process
participate in embodied theory, the corporeality of knowledge and the promises of monsters for
the articulation of identities outside the norm.
In 2010 she started working on an extensive experiment with sculptures containing live spiders. This
series is called ‘Myths of the Near Future’. The spiders complete the sculptures with their webs over
a course of several weeks.

Link Leisure
(Vancouver, CA) - installations, objects – lives and works in Brussels
Born and raised in Canada I began my love affair with form and space by rejecting an artistic education. Instead I fled to London UK to learn my trade by working hands-on, immersing myself in
the stimulating and challenging underground art / fashion / club scene from late 1980’s to 2001.
Starting with doing art department on pop music videos and performance stage design with artists such as Leigh Bowery and Vivienne Westwood, moving on to a career as an art director in the
advertising and fashion industry. In 2001 I left London and began an extensive globe trot which
lasted several years. Landing in Brussels more time than I have fingers and toes.
“Developing installations of multi-layered sculptures and images that challenge your erotic assumptions., Link will investigate the camouflaging of deceit and what this very act reveals about
the artist and his subject, and also about the viewer and his perception.
It is disturbingly attractive, aesthetic, delicate, subtle, and tremendously sexual. It is a little degrading, definitely exciting, and elegantly perverse.“ Thomas Klau Journalist

Quentin Armand
(1978, FR) - drawings, installations – lives and works in Bayonne
His drawings take their strength from the simplicity of the line. His sculptures take us along winding paths which question the subtle and poetic understanding of everyday life. Privileged witnesses of his relationship with the world, the works of Quentin Armand rely on his joyful sassy and
, while blithely titillating ours. At once comic and strange, they entertain and question, baffle and
delight.

Mets ta forme rose 2009 Piet.sO - photo Piet.sO
The universe of Piet.sO is populated with little girls bogged down in coloured matter, ghost like
dresses, ornaments crystallised by salt and luminous swings.
Her work reveals the need to fall and then the metamorphosis, the ritual of the transmission feminine to arrive at an osmosis with the elements of the forest that has become the city with her performance installation, the quantum walks.
Here the marvellous has become worrying, the luminosity of fairies to buffer the fall. Then, the culmination, the knowledge of how to pass through the forest, the world, in serenity.

Antoine Meyer
(1978, FR) - vidéos, photographs, installations – lives and works in Brussels
La villageoise, 2009.
His practice is similar to hunting: he stays on the lookout, and most often in urban areas. Generally
a photographer, his shots create unexpected stagings, where light and construction of pictorial
space is primordial. Both radical and libertarian, Antoine MEYER shows something strangely traditional. He sometimes uses other mediums but it is always about the reality and what it hides. His
works navigate between fictions and documentaries, as alternating cloudy and sunny times.

Multidisciplinary artist and designer, Jerome Boutigny offers a singular, moving look on the technological world as it is nowadays, a return to primitive innocence, populated with a sassy wildlife
which appropriates the machine.

Edouard Poullain
(1966, FR) - artist, designer – lives in France et works in Bruxelles
Surface reflections, movement and light are the main springs of his resin on plexiglass paintings.
Design, installation, painting, architecture, Edouard Poullain is an explorer of spaces that he invests
in these multiple tracks.

Personal creations : lounge chairs, resin on floor, meeting tables...
Creator and director AREA 42, Belgium, Creator and director of Connected France Space.
Gi Monseu
(1952, BE) - artist, objects and space designer - lives and works in Paris
From a very early age receptive to the vibration of colors and shapes that offered the tropical nature in which he grew up, he composed polychrome symphonies, making the colors resonate on
unexpected music ranges, he shapes dreams in the material in order to make lights bounce and
a often playful poetic sensibility shine. We can recognize the transcript of sharing his emotions in
numbers of this baroque contemporary composer.
Architectural achievements of public and private spaces, furniture in Sweden, France and Belgium.
Design exhibitions in Stockholm, Prague and Paris. Prime Contractor and designer of AREA 42
AREA 42
46 a rue des palais 1030 Bruxelles
Area4 : Glass blocks room with robotic lights
Located in the neighborhood of Sainte-Marie, Schaerbeek, in the old prestigious building of the
RTT signed by the architect Michel Polak in 1935, the AREA 42, settles on two levels with a total
available area of approximately 2500 m2.
A Team led by, Edouard Poullain (designer - France) and Gi Monseu (architect - Europe and the
USA) and joined by two artists Peter Keene (GB) and Piet.sO (Fr) have created a place with a very
strong identity. From the opening in 2007, their initial project was to create a place able to host
all types of events and to develop and invent a particular host for the artistic sector in Schaerbeek,
open to international artists and exhibitions.
As the first event initiated and edited by the team, the exhibition The Red Monkey Whispers in the
Ear of Fear is a platform of thinking about future partnerships art / institutions / companies for the
following sessions inside AREA42’s walls.
